Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

When Berta Schumacher’s parents inform her that Main Amana is going to be their new home, she is certain that her life is over. Accustomed to the bright lights of Chicago, Berta doesn’t know if she can adapt to life in the devout village. Johanna Ilg has spent most of her life in Main Amana, but she sometimes wonders what it would be like to live somewhere else. Given the job of instructing Berta on her new duties in the kitchen, Johanna has her hands full with the headstrong newcomer, who is determined to find a way to return to her real home in Chicago. Johanna had always believed her roots were in Main Amana, but after she stumbles across a family secret, she begins to wonder exactly where she does belong. Richly imbued with fascinating details about life in the Amana colonies, the first addition to Miller’s new Daughters of Amana series is a quietly compelling tale of faith and friendship. --John Charles

My Review

I enjoyed this book. I feel like it was well-written. There are several types of writing styles; some authors possess a straight-forward writing style that allows quickly read a book and enjoy its plot and characters, while others are truly wordsmiths who write phrases so beautiful that you have to stop and linger over them as one would a rose on a summer day. (See what I did there?)

Judith Miller writes in a straight-forward manner that tells the story and she tells it well. Her characters come alive by the details she shares. She has the ability make you know the characters and cause them to get under your skin and annoy you or make you sympathize with them. Berta annoyed me but at the same time I pitied her and wanted to offer her guidance. I sympathized with Johanna as she tried to offer guidance to Berta and as she dealt with her own life falling apart.

This book surprised me. I suppose I didn’t read the back cover until after I read the book because I had no idea that Johanna was going to learn a troubling secret and the secret she did learn took me by surprise. I love when a book isn’t predictable!!

This was a wonderful book and it was the first book I read about the Amana colonies. (I believe there are two Amana Colony series.) I was very excited to pick up another Judith Miller book. I have thoroughly enjoyed all that I have read by her.

I highly recommend this book.

Good, clean story. Well written. Clever. A bit predictable. But I liked it.

Growing up I had the privilege to travel with my parents and siblings. We saw quite a bit of the United States over the years. One place that we stopped to see was the Amana Colonies in Iowa. I was twelve years old at the time and the history didn't impact me. I remember my dad was extremely excited to visit the building where appliances where being made. I love bakeries and to this day that's all I really remember about Amana Colonies is the wonderful smell. When I had the chance to read this book by Judith Miller I was excited because I had a memory to go with her story. To my knowledge this is the first fiction book to be written about the Amana Colonies. I didn't realize they were a group who lived, worked and worshipped together, somewhat like the Amish but more communal. I enjoyed getting entangled in the lives of Johanna and Berta. Both longing for so much more and yet both girls are so alike. There's a secret that is revealed and affects the decisions Johanna will make. This is the story of a journey of two girls from two different worlds that come together in one common place. I do hope that there is a Book 2! This is a wonderful 5 star historical read!

I assume that Amana is/was an actual, historical place that the author presented in this novel, which made reading it more interesting because I enjoy the cultural aspect of learning about different faiths and ways of life. That being said, little background was given as to the basis for those beliefs, which left me with the idea that this group of people were really just extremely strict Christians. I don't think "Amish" is the appropriate label (they used machinery) but again, without descriptions from the author I have no idea.

The book has an interesting/unique approach for a plot, several surprises to keep things moving, and a decent amount of teenage girl drama to please young adult readers I'd imagine. It was a little tame overall to me, as an adult, and I really felt that it was far too long--the second half of the book positively dragged. I felt like the same formula of "rebel--get caught--repent--rebel" was repeated too many times.

That being said, the writing flowed, there were few errors, and since I got in the free Kindle version I have to say that overall I was satisfied with it.

The characters were fully fleshed out, the plot was complex, and the story was fulfilling. The best part, I felt immersed, not only in the time period, but also in the German-immigrant town.

I also want to add that I am a person who generally dislikes reading a story with any sort of religious overtone. For me, religion is within, and I get very frustrated when I feel that somebody is trying to shove their beliefs down my throat. However, that wasn't the case with this book. While there was a strong religious tone to the story, it was in keeping with the characters and was in no way trying to make people believe in the same way. While I know that many wouldn't consider this an issue at all, I thought it was worth adding for anyone else out there who felt similar to me.

The story takes place in Iowa In1877 & is set in the Amana colonies, a people I had not heard of previously. They seemed to live a Shaker or Amish way of life, but have now moved on to a more integrated society. This is really more of a story of young people trying to find their right place in the world from a Christian perspective, & how parents aren't or ever were perfect. The interest for me was the daily life of these people & that they found doing the right thing as hard then as it is now. Not for anyone who doesn't like Christian writing but a good light read for anyone else. It was free but I would like to learn more of these people even if it wasn't free. !

I really enjoyed reading and learning how the people in this community lived. At times though I became weary of Berta and her selfish ways but I was happy with the ending. Looking forward to reading the next book in the series.

This was an enjoyable and undemanding read about 2 girls in a 19th Century Amish community. I liked the way the story was written from the perspective of 2 very different girls, Johanna and Berta. One was born and bred in the community and happy to be an obedient daughter and member of her commune, whilst the other was suddenly thrown into the community by her family who thought a change from city life would be good for their rebellious teenage daughter. I enjoyed reading how the 2 girls became friends despite their differences and how they reacted to their family problems and issues. Thank you to Amazon for this free download. I don't normally enjoy Amish fiction, but I did think this book was a good read.

It was an interesting book, but a little slow in places. The story, especially with God in it, made my heart and soul smile.
