Tom Ripley detested murder. Unless it was absolutely necessary. If possible, he preferred someone else to do the dirty work. In this case someone with no criminal record, who would commit 'two simple murders' for a very generous fee. . . .

A needed a book to read on vacation. I'd recently seen Purple Noon and found Patricia Highsmith's life fascinating. I'd seen the movie Ripley's Game a while ago so purchased the book to see how closely it followed the book, both are excellent.

Ripley is one of the outstanding characters of crime novels. In this novel he is actually trying to help someone but goes about it in a way that only Tom Ripley can. The outcome is not what he expects. In this novel the reader really is on Ripley's side in many parts of the book. I think Highsmith is one of the best authors of the 20th century. I wish she had had greater recognition during her lifetime.

Of all the Ripley books, I thought this one was the most interesting and engaging. Anyone who reads the Ripley novels knows that he is a very dark character, with sunny manners and a lot of secrets. His thought processes are revealed in this book and are really amoral - he is often amused at things that cause other people pain or suffering. He worries a lot about trivial inconveniences, and does not worry much at all about his major transgressions.

I liked the characters in this book - Jonathan was an interesting and very human character. Strong morals, but able to be seduced. Reeves and the other characters round out the cast. I do think Highsmith's male characters tend to be more developed than her female ones, and I would say that's true of this novel as well.

I liked this one much better than the last one I read, Ripley Underground, which seemed less eventful to me.

Still an interesting character, Ripley seems know to get himself involved in situations now that stretch this reader's sense of credibility just a little too far. It's a good read, but lacks the impact of the original of the series.

There is an inevitability of consequences as events unfold that holds reader's attention, deeds are done, slips are made and consequences follow, each event creating a little more tension. Ripley is amoral, and a sociable psychopath, if there is such a personality, a good friend and a dangerous foe.

Highsmith details scenes nicely and draws the reader into the story and provides entertaining thriller novels.

Tom is approached by Reeves to kill a higher up in the mafia, who are trying to infiltrate Germany. Tom doesn't want to get involved but says he'll try to find someone. Enter Jonathan Trevanny, a small shop keeper who makes and sells picture frames. Jonathan is suffering from leukemia and knows that the disease will eventually kill him. Enter Tom to come up with a plan that involves a a complete stranger with no ties to any crime to commit this one. Enjoyed this book better than Ripley Under Ground.

For readers that are interested in psychology, this book and complete series is so darkly entertaining.
Tom Ridley is my favorite psychopath. From his mundane to his outrageous thoughts, I love following his actions.
You will, too. Love all Patricia Highsmith’s books.

I would give it five stars as it's a complex and thrilling read, but the sloppy formatting let it down. Virago needs to do better with its ebooks.

I’m a huge fan of Patricia Highsmith and had not realised there were all the wonderful extra books about Tom Ripley, Fantastic. She could read as stand alone stories about Tom or read in sequence as I did.

5.0 out of 5 stars Ripley's Game by Patricia Highsmith

I am only just discovering Patricia Highsmith's writing, having loved the European settings of her novels which have been made into films. She is so clever that Tom Ripley's evil deeds become something we might very well have had to do ourselves in the circumstances.

4.0 out of 5 stars A step in the right direction

Still not on the same level as the first book, but this time Highsmith doesn't try to emulate it with the results of writing a messy and at moments unbelievable story like in the second book. In this third "adventure" the story is very stripped back. There aren't particularly impressive plot twists and it's very reminiscent of one of her previous novels "Strangers on a Train". That said, it's still a gripping enough tale thanks to Jonathan, the "real" protagonist of this story.
