Shanghai Style: Art and Design Between the Wars Paperback – September 1, 2008
Purchase options and add-ons
From the 1920s to the 1940s, no place was more modern than Shanghai: a veritable playground amid a sea of Asian and European influences; an urban population clamoring for all that was new and Western, but whose aesthetic sensibilities remained profoundly Chinese. In this rich social and cultural history of Shanghai’s art and culture, Lynn Pan guides the reader through the myriad world inhabited by commercial and underground artists and designers, performers, architects, decorators, patrons, as well as politicians, generals, and crime bosses. What emerges is a singular portrait of a city and its art—its life blood, in an era that continues to capture the imagination of art lovers and cultural critics today.
Lynn Pan is the best-selling author of Sons of the Yellow Emperor: A History of the Chinese Diaspora; Tracing it Home: A Chinese Journey; and The Encyclopedia of the Chinese Overseas. She lives in Shanghai.

- Reviewed in the United States on May 16, 2009Shanghai Style examines various facets of Shanghai's cultural world in the era between WWI and WW II. It is a scholarly presentation; it goes behind the "glitter" that "Shanghai"(in the 1920s and 30s) normally evokes. The reader comes to appreciate the flow of ideas between Western and Chinese cultures and its impact,in politics as well as art.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 25, 2014I would never purchase another design/graphic book without having seen a hard copy first. The book was small, the photos were totally unsuitable for a book that was supposed to be about Art and Design, and I would highly recommend that it wasn't bought by anyone. What a waste of money!
- Reviewed in the United States on September 3, 2014I found this book on Shanghai Art and Design to be very insightful and charming. Covering: painting, books and magazines, comics and cartoons, advertising, architecture and interior decoration with a plethora of photos, and sketches at the top, bottom, and margins of the text. What a clever economy of space. It also lessens the irritation of having to turn pages to find the "thing itself" referred to in texts. There is also a bibliography and index. Trust me, I peruse bibliographies and indexes assiduously. All the wonderful material is packed into 285 glorious pages of information that most likely will be 50% new to you (even if you are a Shanghai aficionado with more than 5 books on "old" 1918-1939 Shanghai) or provide more depth of information that was cursorily provided in other books. Of course life not being perfect you will need to pursue other venues to obtain more in depth information on specific individuals, i.e., the artist Pan Yuliang, for example and or movements and trends in 'old' Shanghai 1918-1939). Regardless, this slim book packs more punch for it's size and length than other "tomes" of comparative research. Read the delightful prologue and plunge in! Also, I applaud and laud Long River Press - everything about your book design and manufacture including the jacket binding/paper/type enchanted me, even the smell of the pages.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 11, 2016This book is a total delight. It is very well researched and written in a smooth and pleasant style. The book is a great introduction to Shanghai culture. As a sinologist who has lived in the Asia for over 25 years it is always a delight to find a book like this on Chinese culture that is not superficial. I just wish I could give it six stars.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 10, 2012This is a good study of the flourishing of modern art, design and literature in Shanghai from the overthrow of the Qing Dynasty until the 1940's. It is organized by theme (art, cartoons, design, etc) and within each chapter by artist. The discussion of the European origins of much of the material are good (if fairly conventional); the discussions of their transmission via Japan is excellent and much harder to find in other sources. While well-researched, it does not read like a scholarly monograph, but is well-written (I read it pretty much straight through over a weekend). The illustrations are very good.
