Nita Leland, a resident of Dayton, Ohio, describes the journey into art that began in 1970 when her husband gave her a surprise gift of watercolor paints. She shares how her life changed in 'Born Creative: A Memoir of Paint, Passion & Purpose' (2020). Nita taught watercolor for many years and developed a passion for color, which led her to write her first book in 1985, published by North Light Books. Three more titles followed and all are still in print, three having had several revisions and updates: 'Confident Color' (2008); 'New Creative Collage Techniques'; (2011); 'The New Creative Artist' (2018)

'Exploring Color Workshop, 30th Anniversary Edition' (2020). All continued her exploration into creativity, color and collage for her students. Nita has taught workshops throughout the United States and Canada and still teaches a watercolor class at the Washington Township Enrichment Center in Dayton.

Nita Leland is an excellent artist and teacher. This book is a must for your library and education. Looking for an answer to a look you cannot ever really get the way you want it? You will find the answer in this fantastic book. I could never get the foggy mist to look the way I wanted it to, well guess what there is a color mix that really achieves the look I wanted (not the colors I had tried before !). The numerous examples in the book are like going to a workshop (with out the travel and expense). This book is a great investment of time and money. It has straight forward instructions that don't require the entire line of paints a company makes to achieve the beauty and harmony you want in your work. These ideas and instructions can naturally be used in any type of work you like to do. The book is beautiful and very useful.

Look No Further! I have never encountered a book that explains color with greater clarity, ease of understanding and usefulness than this book. It's one I have already recommended this book to several artists!

If your task requires color, your success demands a practical understanding and ability to leverage color with purpose. This is not limited to the art world. This book explores and explains all you need to know and leverage color in an easy to read yet intelligent format of brief text and example. It offers the cognitive tools and understandings you need, along with some inspiration to boot. It will expand your creative palette and options!

Just buy it.

If you haven’t already studied color theory extensively then I highly recommend this book. I am a beginning watercolor artist and I am amazed at the education I am getting. I know basic color theory and have done color wheel exercises. However I felt like I kept repeating the same mistakes with my paintings without knowing exactly what was wrong even after taking classes, instructor feedback, etc. I am not even done reading the book yet and already understand so much more about color relationships and color science. I’m really looking forward to doing the “try it” exercises!

This author includes very useful tips throughout the book for creating and maintaining a reference file for new techniques as I learn them and samples of experiments, etc.

I have started my file and it makes a one-stop place to look for things. I don't have to remember what book or article I found it in. With my memory (or lack of) that is a real time saver.

Also the process of creating the file item helps to cement the idea in my mind.

The rest of the book is excellent and provides great experiments for beginners.

Like she says, "Try It!"

Bought this book for my 11th grade daughter, and to an extent, for myself. I was able to tell when I saw colors that looked good together, but I was never able to understand why, or to create color combinations myself. This book unlocked that mystery for me. Color combinations are presented in a mathematical way with well defined color wheels, so the mentally colorblind can jump right in, confidently. In later chapters, the color wheels multiply to fit any need, and the combinations are as complex and you can want. It is nice that the color wheels have defined pigment colors, and there is a large pigment cross reference in the back of the book.

This is the second Nita Leland book on Color that I have purchased. Both are excellent! Leland lays out the basics of color theory and provides very helpful suggestions for different color palettes. She goes beyond the basics so that even the most skilled artist can learn something useful. Her suggestions have helped me create more cohesive and pleasing art work. I highly recommend this book to all artists (even my friend who works in fabric arts.)

This book is a nice review on how important knowing the basics of colors and how the artist's choice of colors and combinations used effect their success or failure of every painting and art work.
