Now a New York Times bestseller! Using child-friendly language, this playful picture book explains how genetics make each person unique and celebrates how we are more alike than different and are all part of the human race. In The Smallest Spot of a Dot: The Little Ways We’re Different, The Big Ways We’re the Same, Linsey Davis, bestselling children’s author, Emmy-winning correspondent, and host for ABC News, together with co-author Michael Tyler, encourages children to find their own unique dot with sweet, rhyming prose.

”Only .1% of our genes make us uniquely who we are. We are 99.9% identical, alike, the same—equal. This book is 100% about that truth.”

Combining whimsical rhymes and Lucy Fleming’s engaging art, The Smallest Spot of a Dot is:

  • An inspiring story of connection, equality, and acceptance

  • Great for classroom use as children explore genetics, DNA, and individuality
  • The perfect read-aloud for kids ages 4–8

Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

K-Gr 3—With a message celebrating our differences and our sameness, this title for young readers starts with a dot. Each dot represents a gene. Readers are told that we are all made of billions and billions of tiny gene dots. One of these billions is your special dot. It makes each person unique. "The rest of the billions of dots we discussed/ Are exactly the same inside each of us." Our uniqueness and our sameness are highlighted in a multitude of ways through the text and inviting illustrations including a diverse cast of children. The message of this text, that genetically we are 99.9 percent the same, is critical for children to know in a world that seemingly seeks to divide, categorize, and "other" people. VERDICT Useful for multiple lessons from science to social-emotional learning, this title simultaneously encourages readers to find and celebrate that which makes them unique while identifying the similarities that unite us all in a common human family.—John Scott

The description said new but not sure about that. This is how the book arrived, not sure how this passed inspection. I ordered a replacement and look forward to reading the story to my grandchildren once replacement has been delivered.

This book is incredible in so many ways! The rhythm of the words, the simple explanation of a complex idea, and the wonderfully vibrant and attractive illustrations make for one of the best children's books I've seen. The book starts by explaining that everyone is made up of dots called "gene" and everyone has their own special dot that makes them different from everyone else. Then the book moves on to say that besides our one "me-my-mine" dot, we are all the same. This book beautifully illustrates the statistic that every human being's genetics are 99.9% identical, while also tying in lessons about kindness and inclusivity. I love that the book equally gives credit to our own unique genetics that makes us different, as well as the fact that we are all human and have that in common with everyone.
Awesome book!

It is a very well written and beautifully illustrated children's book which accepts the challenge of explaining our differences in an engaging, informative and affirming way. A perfect gift for teachers, parents, or those who just love reading children's literature. It will leave you feeling a little lighter and more connected.

I volunteer at a science center in Florida and talk about evolution and how we are related to all life. I have several books on display along with my fossils. This book is right on topic and I have it in my display. People are drawn to the book due to its cover illustration. I wasn’t sure about the last sentence and changed it to “we are all equally colorful”. People do like that and I guess they could see that one may modify a book to make it even more extraordinary. I talk with all ages of people and all ages are drawn to the book.

This is a beautiful, happy and very much needed book for the times we live in. I eagerly recommend it for adults, as well as children. Anyone familiar with The Skin You Live In and has heard him speak can easily discern that Michael Tyler’s creative DNA is unmistakably prominent throughout the book. So, why isn’t his name also unmistakably prominent as a co-author? Seems to be a misstep given the egalitarian intent of the book.

I order Linsey’s books as soon as I can! I have grandchildren, nieces/nephews and friends….and to read to children that we all are only A DOT different from each other- what an easy lesson in acceptance for us all. How can you not see our Lord in every book she gifts to us - who else could create such uniqueness in just one DOT! Thank you, Linsey
