Peter Knowles was on one of the early Grand Canyon Kayaking Trips in 1973 and was run over by a 10m motorised raft on one of the large rapids. This near drowning didn't put him off and it started a love of big white water and a lifetime paddling major rivers around the world.

He first travelled to Nepal and the Himalayas in 1983 and then fell in love with the country. Since then he has paddled and explored almost all the major rivers of the Himalayas – from the Afghan border to the mighty Brahmaputra and probably more than anyone else alive today. He has led over 40 trips and expeditions and made many first descents in Nepal, Pakistan, India, Tibet and Bhutan.

He has appeared numerous times in films and television and is a Life Fellow of Britain’s Royal Geog-raphical Society.

He wrote the first edition of White Water Nepal in 1991 and then founded Rivers Publishing. He now tries to stay warm and dry sitting in front of a computer, writing about rivers - but friends keep dragging him off to some exotic river to get cold, wet and scared yet again!

If you intend to paddle any of the main rivers in the southeast and you are looking for information on them, this is the book for you.I found it to be a very good guide for all sorts of users wether they have sit on tops ,inflatables or canoes.
The book has a useful table showing at a glance facts on each waterway,allowing you to check if it is safe and suitable for your experience before you set out.Also it includes information on distance ,type of waterway and much more and of course where the pubs are!
Each water has a comprehensive section giving you all you need to know about it.

My partner and I recently moved to the south of England and enjoy kayaking! We got this book to help us explore the area and found the descriptions of the routes clear and very detailed. We also love the details of the pubs you can visit also along the route which makes the paddling much more appealing when the weather is not great. I can recommend this book for anyone who is new to paddling or would like to visit routes that are not local to their area.

We got this book as we have just bought a sit on top kayak and also had some sessions with other kayaks and open canoes. It is just what we need. Gives good information on places to go with your own boat, with parking and other facilities info. We also found it useful in giving details of hiring boats. It is quite specific to the South and although it is called Pub Paddles we haven't visited a lot of the pubs but found it useful for trips with kids (ours are 4 and 10 years). Well worth it.

I like that the book gives you options for lengthening many of the paddles as well if you fancy a longer day out.
