Not only does this book confirm that there are other people who don't believe that monogamy is the ideal, but it explains how they survive in a world that doesn't agree. It even offers helpful hints to consider, whether it is your first time or your fiftieth. It details how rational and happy alternative relationships can be in a way that is non-threatening.
I read it twice, with a highlighter! I even bought copies for all my friends who could never understand what I was talking about before. I highly recommend this book for anyone who is or knows someone who is involved in or curious about non-monogamy.

I couldn't stop reading this book. I have always felt somewhat alienated by my inability to appreciate a monogamous lifestyle and not feeling it is the natural course for every (if any) couple. This book really helped me feel not quite so alone in respect to my value system of loving whomever, whenever and for whatever reasons. Not necessarily just having sex (which the book does not detail too graphically) but honest communion with other human beings which does not deplete the love for anyone else. "Starvation economics", as it is referred to in the book is not how love works. Just as you could never love one of your own children less than any other of them, it is possible to apply this to friends and lovers as well. There IS enough love to go around and this book helped me come to terms with how to express this.

It's all about how we choose to define the ourselves and the words used to label us in society. Slut doesn't have to mean someone with loose morals and low self esteem. I contend that it can and should mean someone with the confidence to freely explore and express their sexuality in whatever way brings them joy without infringing on anyone else. As the author so astutely puts it, sluts get mortgages too!

This is one of those books I have to re-buy every year because I always give it away to a friend. There were a wide range of reasons: friends recently single and not wanting to be monogamous right away, or a guy buddy of mine who was "falling in love" every other weekend and I wanted him to be cool to the 20 or so ladies with whom he was making out. I first got it when a lover and I wanted to remain open to other relationships. Because we read this together to early in our relationship, we had a lot of great conversations and clarified our expectations. I can honestly say it was one of the most grounded relationships of my lifetime.
