“Matlock writes about generous people striving to live and love well. She does it beautifully.” ~ Contra Costa Times

Molly and Tommy Lee Hayes are considered the perfect couple. They are preparing to celebrate their silver wedding anniversary at the VFW hall. However, beneath the perfection, dissatisfaction smolders—a dissatisfaction that one morning propels Molly to pack her things, including her cat and her horse, and take off for the sanctuary of Aunt Hestie’s cottage, the place reserved for all women of her family who leave their husbands. Tommy Lee is left bewildered and holding his own anger.

With her engaging style of affectionate humor and emotional drama, Curtiss Ann Matlock goes deep into the hidden desires and needs of a passionate woman and the man strong enough to love her. Proving that no marriage is an island is a cast of colorful supporting characters: Molly’s family of women—Mama, who goes frequently in public dressed in her robe, and the four other unique Collier sisters; Sam Ketchum, Tommy Lee’s best friend, who has always loved Molly, Savannah, eldest child, pregnant and emotional, and her husband who wants nothing to do with the family; sons Boone and Colter, grown, but still with expectations of their parents.

Then there is the entire community of Valentine, Oklahoma, everyone having a view on Molly and Tommy Lee’s situation. In the end, Molly and Tommy Lee discover that they share a commitment far stronger and more durable than either had imagined. And that it is the rediscovered love that may be the sweetest love of all.

Curtiss Ann Matlock is an American writer of 38 novels of contemporary and historical fiction for Silhouette Books, Harlequin Historical, Avon, and Mira Books. Her novels have placed on the USA TODAY best seller lists and received numerous awards, among them two National Readers’ Choice Awards, and three nominations for the Romance Writers of America’s prestigious RITA® Award. Told with a strong Southern voice, her heartwarming stories portray the human comedy and uncommon valor of everyday people striving to deal with heartbreak, to live with faith, and to love well.

Born in North Carolina, Curtiss Ann traveled widely until she and her husband settled in rural Oklahoma, where for thirty years they raised their son and a few horses, the church was just up the road, and everyone managed to know everyone and help out when necessary. Today Curtiss Ann resides in south Alabama, where she is busy with family, writing, gardening, and RVing.

“All my life I have been given refuge, pleasure, and encouragement from fiction, and my aim in writing my books has been to pass the same on to my readers. It is my hope that upon reaching the last page of one of my novels, the reader feels more hopeful about herself and her life. I know that in at least in a few instances, I have achieved this aim, as readers have written to tell me so. All praise goes to God, Who guided me even when I was filled with doubt and unbelief. He is “from Whom comes every good and perfect gift” and nothing stops His plans.”

After twenty-five years of marriage, Molly knows that she should feel closer to her husband, Tommy Lee. They've shared more years together than apart, after all, and gone through all the heartaches and trials that are a part of every life. But somehow along the way, Molly has lost her connection to her husband and, feeling as though he no longer needs or wants her, she flees to the tiny "Aunt Hestie" cottage behind her mother's home. There, in the circle of her sisters, Mollie begins to discover exactly who she is and to learn what she wants from life. She can't help but wish, though, that Tommy Lee would call her back into his home and his heart. Has their love truly died? Is Molly destined to follow in her mother's divorce-strewn path? Or can Tommy Lee and Molly learn how, once again, to hold on to each other for dear life, grasping with all the passion and promise that knit them together before?

Curtiss Ann Matlock spins a sweet, homey tale set in her small town of Valentine, Oklahoma. Though the majority of the primary characters from the other Valentine books are missing here, what is still present is the warmth and heart that infuses all of her novels. With her characteristic blend of light humor and Southern charm, Matlock weaves a beautiful story of love after long years of marriage: love that has been beaten down by life but that will, eventually, emerge stronger and more beautiful for its scars. Matlock's portrayal of the connection between the Collier sisters adds an interesting dimension to the book, clearly illustrating the power of the sister bond and its meaning in life. All in all, a wonderful book and worth so much more than the low pricetag on Kindle!!

I first discovered Curtiss Ann Matlock when I came across her Silhouette Special Edition books… Love Finds Yancey Cordell, Last of the Good Guys and Summertime. I immediately fell in love with Matlock’s down-to-earth characters and warm writing style that makes the reader feel as if she’s part of the story and not just an outsider looking in on the action.

Love in a Small Town is another Matlock winner that takes place in Valentine, Oklahoma. The story is about a couple whose marriage is in a rut. Molly and Tommy Lee are no longer sure of what they want out of life or even if the love they feel for each other is enough to make them happy anymore.

The story of how they find their way back to each and recapture the magic they once felt in each other’s arms is filled with wit, humor, tears and lots of emotional sigh-worthy moments. If you haven’t read a book by Curtiss Ann Matlock, you’ll be hooked on this author after reading Love in a Small Town.

I thought I had read all the Valentine books but stumbled over this one while looking for something else. I enjoyed the story. Matlock’s unique voice is already evident in this early work. The characters were multi faceted, torn, confused and sometimes bitter but also like-able and caring. The setting was comfortable, almost prosaic yet there was an almost magical quality throughout, especially in Aunt Hannah’s cabin. I enjoyed this, the first book in the Valentine series, and would recommend it to anyone.

I wish it would have been better.

Imagine having a little cottage--just for the womenfolk--just in case there's a "man problem." Now, imagine, after nearly 25 years of marriage, having a man problem--seems more likely than the cottage but Curtiss Ann invites us back to Valentine, Oklahoma one more time to explore the ups and downs of love and marriage in a small town where everybody knows your business. Everyday people with ordinary lives fill the pages in a Matlock novel but the tension, emotion, humor, and frustration come through loud and clear. And she shows us in each story how love is a treasure, sometimes throwing in just a touch of magic to remind us of the serendipity in everyday life.
The kids are grown and now Molly is wondering why Tommy Lee won't come out of the garage.
A bundle of pent up emotions erupt and she leaves for Aunt Hestie's cottage. Their pride keeps them apart and a long time friend moves in, complicating issues even more. If you are like me and have loved the stories set in Valentine, you will be delighted with this one as well.

I've been a Curtiss Ann Matlock fan for quite a while and this one is one of the best! Her writing takes you into the story immediately, the dialogue feels real throughout, the situations are those probably experienced by the vast majority of her readers and the whole thing flows. I read the whole book in one sitting (no chores were done in this house that day!) and loved the fact that it was so compelling without phony plot twists or other artifices. There aren't many books written about characters in their 40s, and it was so nice to find one this good! This snapshot into a troubled marriage and how it works itself out is a tour de force. I recommend it wholeheartedly.

This is a wonderful story about the ups and downs of marriage and the need for rejuvenation in each relationship. The idea of having one's own little cottage to retreat to is such a wonderful idea. The involvement of well meaning children is another well done part of the book!
