Sacred Nile is the story of our collective spiritual imagination and practice. Chester Higgins celebrates the agency of people of African descent and their influence on the foundation of Western religion. His images illustrate how faith migrated up and down the River Nile from Ethiopia to Egypt leaving vestiges of ancient practice in today's worship. This visual portrayal of faith reexamines our spiritual beginnings.

Editorial Reviews

Review

“An epic personal and spiritual journey expressed through images of unearthly and majestic beauty. Higgins’s iconic photography, supported by revelatory text, discovers in Africa a common ancestor for many of today’s major religions.” --David Henry Hwang, playwright

“This visually stunning book also drops some serious knowledge about the cultural and religious connections between the lands that border the Nile; Ethiopia, Nubia, and Egypt from the dawn of history down to the present time. This knowledge is still rejected by many mainstream Egyptologists, but as they become more familiar with other African cultures, religious traditions, and languages, the connections described in this book will be confirmed in academia.” --Solange Ashby, Egyptologist, Barnard College

“In this collection of breathtaking photographs, Chester Higgins takes us to the African source of the West’s spiritual heritage. These images transport us to a different time and place. There are the stories of our religious roots.” --Ari Goldman, director, Scripps-Howard Program in Religion, Journalism and the Spiritual Life, Columbia University

The breathtaking photos alone speak volumes, enhanced by a scholarly, ground-breaking text co-written by the renowned photographer, Chester Higgins, with Betsy Kissam. Their travels down the Nile brought them to the sacred roots of human spiritual yearning, to a major source of culture itself that spread, like our DNA, from Africa all over the world. Anyone interested in photography, architecture, religion, archaeology, and/or the history of humankind should buy this deeply felt book. It's beautiful, poetic and scholarly, a rare combination.

I received your amazing book and sat and looked at every photo with admiration. This book is successful in capturing the true beauty and grace of East Africa through your lenses. I have to say this book did something that many many writers and anthropologists fail to do. It captured how religion came to be used to control people and wipe out traditional African religions by teaching these religions as bad or evil. and using Christianity as a weapon to control minds and destroy African kingdoms and nations. This book showed how this religions are still around but their existence fades away through iconography and written proofs. really a masterpiece

Chester Higgins most recent book, Sacred Nile, is a work in which image and text combine to offer a rare view of powerful and elegant images.

His photographs are profound and offer an opportunity to explore a culture and place that has rarely been seen in this light. The balance between image and text reveals an insight and depth that is unprecedented.

I have spent some glorious moments with these photographs and the text, and I continue to discover and re-discover images of Africa previously unimagined.
