'On the afternoon that Esther Wilding drove homeward along the coast, a year after her sister had walked into the sea and disappeared, the light was painfully golden.'

The last time Esther Wilding's beloved older sister Aura was seen, she was walking along the shore towards the sea. In the wake of Aura's disappearance, Esther's family struggles to live with their loss. To seek the truth about her sister's death, Esther reluctantly travels from lutruwita, Tasmania to Copenhagen, and then to the Faroe Islands, following the trail of the stories Aura left behind: seven fairy tales about selkies, swans and women, alongside cryptic verses Aura wrote and had secretly tattooed on her body.

The Seven Skins of Esther Wilding is a sweeping, deeply beautiful and profoundly moving novel about the far-reaches of sisterly love, the power of wearing your heart on your skin, and the ways life can transform when we find the courage to feel the fullness of both grief and joy.

This is a story of a young woman finally accepting the death of her older sister. Set in Australia, Esther is returning home on the 1 year anniversary of Aura's death. Aura went for a walk by the sea and never returned. Esther has spent this year traveling the world using Aura's stories to see why she died. This is a tale of grief, love and acceptance.

I really enjoyed this author's book "The Lost Flowers of Alice Hart" so I looked forward to her latest book. I am halfway through and not sure I will finish it. The main character Esther is disgusting and expects everyone to understand her horrible behavior toward herself, her family and friends. It's a long and boring read and does not have the beautiful writing style of her first book. A waste of money.

I looked forward to reading this book so much as I loved The Lost Flowers of Alice Hart. I found the main character very annoying and immature, the other characters indulged her in a way that wasn’t realistic, ie they never told her the truth. It was a shame the author didn’t describe the characters, it was hard to picture them. The only bit I liked was about the Faroe Islands. Overall repetitive, shallow and the book needed editing as it was too long.

Holly Ringland please tell my story! Every time I put the story down thoughts lead to when I could next resume reading. My heart was on a roller coaster and emotions readily spilling over. Congratulations Holly, such a mesmerising story

3.0 out of 5 stars Rambling and tedious in places.

I chose I because it sounded intriguing, solving the puzzle of the seven skins. The story started well but after approximately a quarter of the story it became rambling, tedious and rather depressing. I found the main character, Ester, irrating and self obsessed. I struggled through it, determined to finish the book but thinking it was never going to end.
The good points are that it is well written and the descriptions of Copenhagen were interestng.

4.0 out of 5 stars A good read, long winded, though a well layered storyline...

I really liked the concept of this story; the formative childhood experiences, the links to myth and fable, the inclusion of art as symbols and especially the reinterpretation of the messages that the art represented. I also enjoyed the prose for the most part. I do feel that it was longer than it needed to be and unsure if I'm alone here, but I ended up not liking the character of Evelyn (whether this is intentional by the author I don't know). I found her abrasive toward her family and unwilling to try and help them uncover the truth behind Aura's disappearance. She mumbles, groans, murmurs, moans, repeats, interrupts. I certainly do not judge her job or lifestyle choices, and recognise the ordeal the entire family have suffered, mostly alone, however as a person/character I did not warm to her and found her whiny, making excuses and with character flaws I wouldn't tolerate in my life (lying, self absorption). There was lots of value in the story of the book, it is well researched and a fabulous, creative base to the story... but Evelyn irked me.
