Dead in the Water: A Provincetown Mystery (Sydney Riley Series) Paperback – April 27, 2021
Purchase options and add-ons
Family Can Be Murder
Sydney Riley's parents, ensconced at the Race Point Inn, expect her to play tour guide. Wealthy adventurer Guy Husband has reappeared, seeking help regaining the affections of her best friend, Mirela. And the body of a kidnapped businessman has washed up under MacMillan Wharf.
Sydney is literally at sea (not her favorite place), juggling friends and family to indulge her supersized curiosity. Is the murder the work of a regional gang led by the infamous "Codfather" or the result of a feud within an influential Provincetown family? What's Guy Husband's connection? And why does Sydney's boyfriend Ali suddenly insist on visiting—especially while her mother is in town?
Master of crime Jeannette de Beauvoir brings her unique blend of irony and intrigue to this humorous—and at times unsettling—convergence of friends, family, and fatality.

About the author
Jeannette de Beauvoir didn’t set out to murder anyone—some things are just meant to be! Her mother introduced her to the Golden Age of mystery fiction when she was far too young to be reading it, and she’s kept reading those authors and many like them ever since.
She wrote historical and literary fiction and poetry for years before someone asked her what she read—and she realized mystery was where her heart was. Now working on the Sydney Riley Provincetown mystery series, she bumps off a resident or visitor to her hometown on a regular basis.
Jeannette is a member of the Mystery Writers of America, Sisters in Crime, the Author’s Guild, and the National Writers Union. She presents a weekly radio show on the arts streaming on WOMR, a Pacifica network affiliate, and is theatre critic for ptownie.com. Dead in the Water, the eighth book in the Provincetown Mystery Series that features Sydney Riley, is an engaging continuation of the series. Whale watching tours that include insightful details about these mammals, challenging family interactions, loyalty, intimate friendship, romance, memories of the decades-old kidnapping and death of Sydney’s older sister, and a problematic mystery to solve all makes for a riveting story that draws readers in from the beginning and holds their interest until the last page. Eloquent descriptions and misdirection for untangling the mystery add to the overall appeal of this suspenseful mystery, which includes a slight amount of profanity. The book can be read as a stand-alone, but anyone who wants to find out more about what transpired in the characters’ lives prior to Dead in the Water and also enjoys well-crafted mysteries will derive pleasure from reading the previous books in the series.
Highly recommended! Buy it. Read it. Tell your friends.
This is the second book I've read in the Provincetown Mystery series, but it could easily be read as a stand-alone. Impetuous Sydney Riley is the wedding and events planner for the Race Point Inn, one of Provincetown, MA’s most prestigious hotels. Additionally, she is an amateur detective who has solved several murders, which have been chronicled in the 8-book series. This novel finds Sydney's parents visiting her for a few days, so in addition to preparing for an upcoming wedding and making sure her parents (including her overbearing mother) are entertained, she is trying to solve the kidnapping and murder of the wealthy owner of a local whale watching fleet.
The killer was a surprise to me, even though in hindsight I realized the author sprinkled clues throughout the book. What makes this so entertaining and a notch above the typical cozy is Sydney's internal sarcastic monologue - the humorous conversations and one-liners she wishes she would actually say to her mother. She has a great relationship with her boyfriend Ali, who is in law enforcement, and her close friendship with her girlfriend, Mirella, demonstrates Sydney's personality and intelligence.
As the book jacket says, this is a novel of irony and intrigue that often humorously converges between family and fatality.
