Maybe Next Year (Gay Tales for the New Millennium Book 1) Kindle Edition

4.6 4.6 out of 5 stars 13 ratings

Bryan and Chris are high school juniors who have been inseparable best friends for three years. Now, they are discovering that their feelings for each other run much deeper than mere friendship.

Chris, whose open-minded family is completely supportive, is ready and able to live his life out and proud. For Bryan, whose father is the pastor of a very conservative mega-church in a Kansas City suburb, being gay simply isn’t an option. Bryan hopes that maybe next year when they leave Kansas to go to college together, he will be able to live more openly. In the meantime, they must learn how to navigate their conflicting family dynamics and boundaries if they are to fulfill their dream of spending the rest of their lives together.

Everything changes when Bryan is outed. His father will stop at nothing to force Bryan to “leave the homosexual lifestyle,” requiring Bryan and Chris to make some very difficult choices.

"Maybe Next Year" was the first time I was introduced to Dave Hughes. I finished the book in 1 1/2 days and am looking forward to "Instant Adult". The main characters, Brian and Chris, are really believable as are their families. Two different family responses to their son's "coming out" is what is happening in real life.
The character development is excellent and one witnesses the obstacles which have to be overcome. I highly recommend this book.

Bryan and Chris are really sweet, kind young people.
As their story unfolds you'll find yourself rooting for them to be happy, against all odds.
I found myself becoming invested in these characters from the get-go.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book by author Dave Hughes. It's about first love, coming out both easily and in a horrible situation (different characters), love of (and despite) family, and discovery of self. Looking forward to the next book.

I'd read a short story based on this series first, and was drawn in immediately to the lives of the characters. I'm not a romance fan in general, but this could make one of me! It's not strictly a romance, but the love story is central, and the characters and story have me ready for the next one.

This book held my interest. I read it in two days. Can't wait for the next one! It is about two highschool boys who discover they are gay. One boy comes out to his family and all is well. The other one's family doesn't take it as well. There are a few twists along the way. Great book!

Dave Hughes writes a LGBTQ romantic tale with Maybe Next Year. I haven't read anything by this author before, and what a hidden gem. I enjoyed it so much, that I have now followed the author and look for more books to read. The reader is introduced to Bryan and Chris, juniors in high school and have been best friends for years. Chris is out, his family supportive, and he wants to explore his feelings for Bryan. Bryan, for all of his reasons, including an intrusive and conservative father, feels he cannot live "out," but maybe after they go to college, they can be live more openly. Bryan and Chris are trying to discover what their feelings mean, and what their attraction is and where it may go. Young lovers want to spend their lives together, but they live in a small town, where that wouldn't and couldn't happen. Chris' family is supportive of their son, and he doesn't mind being out. He wants to live openly about who he is. Bryan isn't so lucky, and then their journey of not just loving each other, but the obstacles in their way can either hinder their relationship or bring them closer. It's a very heart warming and heart wrenching story. From a parent who actually performed the wedding ceremony for my son and his husband, this story hits close to home. An emotional rollercoaster. This author brings the story to life. The characters are so real, it's like being with them within the story. Unfortunately, this isn't a unique story, well, it is, and written very well, but that's it, things like this happen in real life. I applaud this author and can't wait for the next book to read. Maybe Next Year is a definite recommendation by Amy's Bookshelf Reviews. I read this book to give my unbiased and honest review. Amy's Bookshelf Reviews recommends that anyone who reads this book, to also write a review.

Thoroughly enjoyed this. Only took a few pages to become emotionally invested in the characters. The last chapter in particular was so satisfying. Excellent character development and strong storyline throughout. I understand this is the first of a 7 book series, can't wait to see what comes next.
