Let me tell you the NUMBER ONE reason I LOVED reading this TOS novel: Unapologetically NOT PC! I had forgotten what it was like to read those old TOS novels I'd read years ago, with Chekov still speaking with that thick Russian accent, Bones with his drawl, and Scotty with his thick brogue. Many of the later novels, aside from overkill on the command level females, have deemed it necessary to do away with the charm that I found in hearing Mr. Chekov say things like: "Keptin, Ve have a wery serious situation here!" I truly smile when I read those kinds of lines because I can SEE the young Walter Koenig seated at the Navigation panel with his Davy Jones look-alike hairdo, and hear his distinct form of Russian accent. Scotty always worried with his "Aye Captain, but we nae can stress me poor wee bairns any further"... is another great joy. Please spare me all the drivel about stereotypes because it wasn't about that. What could have been more delightfully diverse than that original crew of the Starship Enterprise on its five year mission?

Okay, so enough about my big reason for giving it a well-deserved 5 instead of a now-usual 4 stars--it's just plain fun to read, and particularly the dialogues! If you lived through the first generation of Star Trekkies... you have found yet another great adventure in the saga of your favorite Starship crew. There has been an apocalyptic disaster on the colony planet Centaurus, which orbits the trinary system around Alpha Centauri. Bones McCoy's daughter Joanna was on Centaurus when it happened and both McCoy and Kirk, are fraught with concern as they try to get there and provide some assistance--but there is a problem. (Isn't there always? ) The Enterprise entire computer systems have gone haywire -- for some, as yet undisclosed reason that the irrepressible Mr. Spock is looking into. Back on Centaurus, chaos is more the rule of the day. The city of New Athens (its capital) is largely in dangerously radioactive ruins-- while a fairly incompetent bunch of rulers try to get control of a defense program that is destroying every ship that comes to help the beleaguered planet!

Enter--the Enterprise! With Uhura being given the Conn, (a first! and I loved how she handled it-- so very like Uhura!) Kirk goes to shore in an unaffected major city using a shuttle with Sulu, meanwhile Spock and Chekov head toward the destroyed capital of New Athens... both teams determined to find the cause of the destruction and the best way to deal with it. What follows is lots of excitement, typically Star-Trek dialogue and scenes, and a great ending. I thoroughly enjoyed this one and will keep it as a favorite--as long as I can find these old ones, where they aren't afraid to give the characters the actual traits we came to know and love on the TV show....heck, the series isn't over... it's still running! I'm anxiously waiting for the next voyage of the Enterprise--with this wonderful "original" crew!

This book w was one of my favorites a long time ago. Rereading it after 9-11 gives a whole new perspective. It's still a great read and has added depth now. The characters act exactly like they should and the situations are really engrossing. I would recommend this story to any Star Trek fan or any reader that wants a new perspective about what happened on 9-11.

I love a story about Len McCoy and his family. This one was very enjoyable and gives some "history" about Jim and Len's friendship as well as Len's relationship with his daughter JoAnna.

Adorei essa história. Simples, sem grandes vôos, bem escrita. Bons momentos de tensão, afetos explodindo em abraços. McCoy melhor médico da galáxia. Muito bom.
