I've read a LOT of fantasy but this was unlike anything else. I meant to read a chapter or two over dinner, but the night is gone. Even though it uses many elements of myth, faery tales and fantasy that will be somewhat familiar to regular readers of fantasy, this author casts an unusual spell on her readers. If you like fantasy, I cannot imagine that you will not enjoy this book. If you've grown bored and weary of the formulaic, the cynical, the repetitive things that are so often found in the genre in both books and other media- then you probably *need* to read this. An excellent book, either way, not to be missed.

The overall tone made reading easy, and the well-timed surprises fit in neatly. I enjoyed the 'what? there's more?' feeling when it looked wrapped up but important matters popped up to be resolved firmly.

I enjoyed this book. It is young adult and up. It is not your average fantasy story, which made me happy. Greyling does a wonderful job creating a unique fantasy world. Looking forward to the sequel.

This book was super fun. I can't be the only one who wants to have a Windsong now! The characters were great. Looking forward to more!

The author kindly gave me an Audible of this book, but I also got the Kindle edition because I like to read along sometimes when I'm listening. This is an epic story, not at all rote or rehashed, and I really liked that. You have the story arc of the heroine as you will in a fantasy, but the plot itself is different from the norm and a bit eerie. I enjoyed that there was a mild but consistent love story underneath, and that there were lessons about ecology and greed that are so appropriate to the genre. I was truly pulled in by the audio narration, and the author's writing style is memorable. I will definitely read more by this author and hope there is more from this world.

Interesting story line. It is about a young girl who feels the whole village is "against" her. The village is located close to a mountain which surrounded by a plant called witterkin. When her father dies and divides his estate her brother suddenly decides he wants what would appear the least favorable portion of the estate. She goes to see why and finds he is killing the witterkin which is supposed to be protected. This draws her across a boundary between worlds where she finds herself in constant danger and discovers things about herself she was unaware of.

The story is well written and does not give away the conclusion during the reading.

W. K. Greyling has created a world very like ours - beautiful and ugly, magical and prosaic, and full of people who are much the same. Themes of kindness and the importance of strong, well-thought-out values add depth to an engaging, well crafted tale that defies classification. It's clearly sci-fi, though the issues encountered are all too human. In some senses, it's a coming of age story; maybe a
love story; maybe a study condemning human greed and the easy way we can declare people who are different in some way as lesser. What I can tell you is that it's a wonderful story, beautifully written, easy to read, and well worth your time. Enjoy!

It was a joy to read this wonderfully written book. The creation of the 'Witterkin' is a great addition to the world of fantasy literature. I look forward to future works by this author.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Haunting Allegory
Reviewed in Canada on March 25, 2023
Co-existent human and fairy dimensions descend into peril when human gold miners attack a powerful alien plant species whose sentience and intrinsic value they cannot even fathom. Two outcasts must overcome their own tragic flaws in order to save each other, their worlds and, ultimately, themselves. Original world-building and an insecure heroine who must find her own intrinsic value mark this fresh allegory of humanity’s relationship with nature. Once I started, I couldn’t stop reading.

I was drawn into this rich world in a few pages and didn’t want to leave. With a compelling storyline and parallels to the hazards of forgetting the importance of the environment of our on world, I couldn’t put it down and just wanted more. I'll definitely be reading more of this author!

5.0 out of 5 stars Enjoyable
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on May 31, 2022
Nicely written, interesting world concept and the main characters are well-drawn. Felt light on secondary characters and world detail, which is always an important anchor in fantasy novels where there's such a range of possibilities, and left some loose ends (part of an unannounced series, perhaps?) but enjoyable overall. The original skills - the windsinger and Nya's own discovered talent - are intriguing.

It feels like one of those authentic fantasies, a feel you would expect from Lord of the Rings in its flow. I enjoyed every chapter! It's definitely worth reading
