Full Throttle: Stories Kindle Edition

4.5 4.5 out of 5 stars 3,115 ratings

New York Times Bestseller

Thirteen relentless tales of supernatural suspense, including “In the Tall Grass,” one of two stories cowritten with Stephen King and the basis for the terrifying feature film from Netflix.

A little door that opens to a world of fairy-tale wonders becomes the blood-drenched stomping ground for a gang of hunters in “Faun.” A grief-stricken librarian climbs behind the wheel of an antique Bookmobile to deliver fresh reads to the dead in “Late Returns.”

In “By the Silver Water of Lake Champlain”—now an episode on Shudder TV’s Creepshow—two young friends stumble on the corpse of a plesiosaur at the water’s edge, a discovery that forces them to confront the inescapable truth of their own mortality. And tension shimmers in the sweltering heat of the Nevada desert as a faceless trucker finds himself caught in a sinister dance with a tribe of motorcycle outlaws in “Throttle,” cowritten with Stephen King.

Replete with shocking chillers, including two previously unpublished stories written expressly for this volume (“Mums” and “Late Returns”) and another appearing in print for the first time (“Dark Carousel”), Full Throttle is a darkly imagined odyssey through the complexities of the human psyche. Hypnotic and disquieting, it mines our tormented secrets, hidden vulnerabilities, and basest fears, and demonstrates this exceptional talent at his very best.

Review

“The poet laureate of everyday terrors returns with a baker’s dozen of deliciously sinister tales. . . . Miniature masterworks of modern horror, proving that life is hard, weird, and always fatal.” — Kirkus Reviews [starred review]

“In his new collection of short stories, Joe Hill shows how insanely good he is at shocking, terrible, whoa, cover-your-mouth-and-gasp endings . . . . Seamless and finely crafted work.” — New York Times Book Review

“This collection cements Hill’s reputation as a versatile master of scares both subtle and shocking.” — Publishers Weekly [starred review]

“Hill’s latest collection of short stories is compulsively readable. Thirteen stories weave in and out of gritty realism, whimsical folklore, and futuristic sf, flowing from one to the next in a fast-paced journey through the surreal. Hill fills each story with shocking plot twists, excellent worldbuilding, and satisfying kismet.” — Library Journal

" Hill is a versatile talent, and this kaleidoscopic collection whirls from crime premises that sound like they could be out of a hardboiled noir, to lyrical and magical-realist works dripping with atmosphere and impressive visuals, to midwestern gothic nightmares straight out of the ’70s horror heyday. Across them all, Hill’s clear voice and talent rings through loud and clear." — barnesandnoble.com

“Hill calls to mind Harlan Ellison at his absolute best, with a penchant for cruel characters learning hard truths.” — San Francisco Chronicle

Full Throttle is a great collection and just more proof that Hill is one of the great storytellers of the early 21st century. Highly recommended.” — SFF World

“This new collection of short fiction by acclaimed horror and suspense writer Joe Hill proves that Hill can do it all.” — CrimeReads

“A four-pack of mayhem in this sparkling collection of short novels. . . .Worth waiting in line for, if you’re a Hill fan. If you’re not, this is the book to turn you into one.” — Kirkus Reviews (starred review) on STRANGE WEATHER

“Every piece is driven by anxiety and unease and feature Hill’s trademark characters who feel absolutely real. But it is also the sense of place that dazzles, whether it’s a sinister version of Narnia in ‘Faun,’ on a coastal pier in ‘Dark Carousel,’ or on a plane as WWIII breaks out in ‘You Are Released.’ Hill lulls the reader into deep enjoyment, even as the terror lies just around the corner.” — Library Journal [starred review]

“[I]n times like these, when real-world terrors outstrip our night terrors, how can a novelist possibly compete? Joe Hill, the author of several terrifying bestsellers, rises to this challenge in Strange Weather.” — Washington Post on STRANGE WEATHER

“[A]nother must-read from a increasingly impressive storyteller [...] Strange Weather speaks to the versatility of Joe Hill’s craft, telling deeply disturbing stories in which cataclysmic forces of nature seem like a gentle rain when set against the actions of villains who are all too human.” — barnesandnoble.com on STRANGE WEATHER

“The Weather quartet unleashes a perfect storm of styles, from a slow-burn thriller to ethereal sci-fi, all told with a consistently strong voice…. Hill whips up emotional moments in all four that strike like lightning and thunderously rumble your soul.” — USA Today on STRANGE WEATHER

“Original and gripping, a page-turner.” — George R. R. Martin on THE FIREMAN

I have been a Joe Hill fan ever since I read Heart Shaped Box though I believe it was The Fireman that earned his place on my must read authors list. I had been meaning to read "In The Tall Grass" for years so I was especially happy to see it included in this collection just in time for me to read it before the made for Netflix movie came out. It was definitely worth the wait and one of my favorites in this collection. It had everything I could want in a horror story, the spine tingling fear of the unknown, coupled with the sheer terror of being suddenly separated from your loved ones. It was a fine example of how no good deed goes unpunished. In fact all of these stories were more than they appeared to be on the surface. They each have a weight and depth that is often lacking in short stories. I can't say that I loved every single one of them, but they all surprised me in their own way. As a horror fan, I most enjoyed the stories that had supernatural elements, including Late Returns, and Dark Carousel. It won't surprise me if someone is smart enough to make movies out of both of them. If thrillers are more your thing Thumbprint, and Throttle are both action packed suspenseful reads. Another of my favorites was Mums, which kind of left me guessing whether delusions or the supernatural were at work after a woman tries to take her child and flee from her survivalist/separatist husband. Those were the 5 star reads for me in this collection.I received an advance copy for review.

One of my favorite short story collections. What a great bundle of stories! My absolute favorites are "Throttle," "Dark Carousel," "By the Silver Water of Lake Champlain," "Late Returns," and "You Are Released." Could read them again and again. If you enjoy popular horror fiction, you'll surely love this book.

Joe Hill has quickly become one of my favorite authors. Someone recommended Heart Shaped Box to me in January and the love has just grown from there. I have hit a bit of a COVID induced reading funk, so the short stories of 20th Century Ghosts (I picked up a paperback at Costco retitled The Black Phone and read back and forth between it and a Kindle version) and Full Throttle were the perfect cure for not having to really make a commitment to a full novel. I hadn't researched an author in ages, so it was a surprise to find out who his father is in the introduction to this collection. Though I admire Dad and probably have him to thank for my love of horror, I truly love Joe's very unique voice. Not all are horror, at least not to my jaded eyes, but the twists and turns will stay with you long after the last word has been read. I'll actually make the effort to dig deeper into Joe Hill, simply so I can make sure I haven't missed anything. And I'll be looking for several film adaptations mentioned in the epilogue.

Late Returns is one of the most heartwarming reads I have had in years. For all the bibliophiles in my life, grab this for that story alone even if you hate horror.

I am definitely not a huge fan of short story compilations, but I couldn’t resist reading this book. I am not going to go into deep detail, but for fun and my opinion I’ll rate each story with stars 1 being bad 5 being best. In case anyone wants to check out the ones I felt were good and avoid the ones I felt were meh.

1.) Throttle- ⭐️⭐️⭐️ this is more of an action packed ride. Not really a horror story. If you like bikes and trucks and chases check it out.
2.) Dark Carousel- ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ I thought this one was written so well. Very mysterious and fun! I suggest if you want an other worldly thriller that is short check it out.
3.) Wolverton Station- ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ one of my favorites in this book. It felt like a little more savage episode you may see on The Twilight Zone.
4.) By the Silver Water of Lake Champlain- ⭐️ I felt like this was a snoozer. Skip this one in my opinion.
5.) Faun- ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ I also loved this story! What a great dark fantasy story! Highly suggest if you enjoy mythical creatures, and revenge.
6.) Late Returns- ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ this story warmed my heart. Also a story I felt Rod Serling would place in The Twilight Zone or Night Gallery. Read this! I would like a follow up story to it.
7.) All I Care About Is You- ⭐️⭐️⭐️ This is a very fun, odd, futuristic type of story, or parallel universe. A quick fun read.
8.) Thumbprint- ⭐️⭐️ Not so great. Really felt like a short segment that might be found in a Lee Child or Tom Clancy novel. It was alright though.
9.) The Devil On The Staircase- ⭐️ I just did not like this story. Odd. Boring. And the typing drove me insane.
10.) Twittering from the Circus of the Dead-⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ a great read! Fun, creepy, and the ending leaves you wanting a bit more.
11.) Mums- ⭐️⭐️⭐️ I was not blown away by this story, but there was some fantastic writing to it. Some creepy aspects, but mainly makes you question what really happened at the end.
12.) In the Tall Grass-⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ fantastic! Such a fun read! I watched the show on Netflix prior and I really liked both! Read this! This one is the most disturbing story in the book.
13.) You Are Released- ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Great story time wrap up this compilation! I really loved the characters. My favorite part is A Ra’s segment. Worth the time.

There you go! My quick thoughts for those that hate short story compilations! Any that I rated 4-5 ⭐️ I highly suggest checking out. The others not so much. Some of the 3 ⭐️ I would suggest also. It’s up to you.

This is a collection of stories and at least a couple of them I have definitely read before but I'm not sure where. Each and every story is as good as the others. It was the title of the book and the first story in it that got me really interested in reading them. I was intrigued by each and every one of them though and they all had a little something different to share. They are definitely all in the horror / thriller genre and the writer has done a superb job bringing them all to life. I would love to see more work from this writer to find out what other tales they might share.

So many of these stories ,especially the one with the service robot, should be made into longer stories/novels. Just as I start really getting into them ,they are done(which,of course,is expected of a short story). I'll be getting this for my niece for her birthday (got her Fairy Tale for Christmas and she loves it!). As they say ,the nut doesn't fall too far from the tree!

Some work, others completely drop the ball by the ending. I still enjoyed the book mostly, but I won’t buy another of his.

I have been a fan of Stephen King for decades. I purposely avoided books by Joe Hill as a King fan I was hesitant to read his son's books. I was wrong I admit it. Joe Hill is a worthy writer. His father can pass the torch. Almost as good as his father. I enjoyed all but two of the short stories in this book . And it has led me to read more of Joe Hill's stories. I am hooked!

It's another short story collection by Joe Hill. It's not as good as 20th century ghosts, but some of these stories are really good. In fact try the audiobook too, it has some good guest narrators (won't spoil them for you here)

They are less horror and more fantasy compared to his previous books, but still well written entertainment.
