Angry Heavens: Struggles of a Confederate Surgeon Kindle Edition

4.6 4.6 out of 5 stars 9 ratings

In this historical novel, a skilled Charleston surgeon in the Army of Northern Virginia questions everything he knows as truth when faced with the horrors of the Civil War.

The Civil War inevitably approaches. Two young Charlestonians, the Irish Catholic Mary Assumpta Bailey, and the English Protestant James Merriweather are soon to be intertwined through marriage, medicine, and their aversion to slavery.

Mary Assumpta Bailey, her brother, Dr. John Bailey, and his medical apprentice, Dr. James Merriweather, openly serve anyone who walks through the doors of their Charleston medical practice – white, free blacks, seamen, or slaves. Equally, and despite its flaws, they also share an abiding love for the South.

Dr. James Merriweather feels an enduring duty to the young men dying in battle and to his young family weathering the War on their small farm on Horlbeck Creek, South Carolina. Merriweather joins the War confident in the knowledge he can use his surgical skills to save the injured and send them back to their families. Rather quickly, Merriweather realizes how unprepared he is for the horrors of battle. Thus he begins a slow journey into his own war with darkness–his sanity precariously in the balance.

A Civil War story of a surgeon's struggle to save lives and the deprivation of missing home.
5 Stars
A Civil War story of a surgeon's struggle to save lives and the deprivation of missing home.
This book brings the characters and their struggles to life in a way that makes them relatable. The hardships of being a surgeon in the most horrific conditions, watching young men suffer and die daily, while keeping one's spirit from dying as well, it must have felt like the heavens were angry. Beyond the struggles of war, the element of love and romance helps to keep the story interesting to all readers.

A unique take on the Civil War. Sure to please romantics and historical fiction readers. Just don’t expect Gone With the Wind! Which is a good thing.

Mickey is a profound storyteller. Perhaps on a little biased, as he was my most hated and ultimately my most beloved grad school professor. However, I despise historical fiction. But this book is so much more than just that.

History, in general, tends to glorify the men and minimize women and their contributions. This book does not. Very quickly the understanding of how everything—every moment in the past—influences the choices made and the ultimate truth for the characters. I, for one, would love to see this book made into a movie. But, that’s just me dreaming.

Do not be afraid to start the journey and read. I promise you will not regret even a second.

Very intriguing book full of twists and turns. Love the way the author used different font in his letters which made it much easier to move from one character to another. He showed great insight into personal issues between family members (these remain true to any armed conflict as I personally know). The climax is very gripping and I couldn't put it down; wanted to know the solution immediately. I enjoyed this book and liked the way it connected to my family genealogy; it helped make my family research come to life due to very similar situations.
