- Reviewed in the United States on December 30, 2024I love my mysteries. This book didn’t disappoint.
Even though we had a back story on the Captain that came from America to claim his inheritance (not a pleasant story either), it helped develop the character & why he was the way he was. However, he kind heart was for the young boy, Micah that he brought with him.
Constable Haze was over his head with a murder and the Captain needed something to calm him from his past. Together, they made a pretty good team. It was a blessing for both of them.
Founding out that the most prominent family in the area might have a reason or an idea why the murder happened, turned the town on its head.
The twist and turns of the mystery made this book a pleasure to read.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 12, 2021This book was a recommendation on my Amazon Kindle. Since it had a historical setting and was NOT in first person (seems like so many cozy mysteries are in first person), I thought I would give it a chance. I found myself enjoying the book. Years ago, I read a mystery set in nineteenth century by Sally Spencer that had a New York detective copper working with a visiting English investigator. Their chemistry was fantastic. Same is true with this book. A Civil War surgeon (with PTSD) and a self-perceived lowly parish constable are paired up to solve the mystery of a dead body found in a church crypt. Don’t expect the mystery to be like a Slap- my-forehead I-didn’t-know-that ! kind of mystery. The mystery is less who-dun-it, but more about the motive.
I gave it one fewer star, because I thought the Captain Redmond’s potential love interest could be utilized better. Granted, this is only the first book I have read in this series. However, I thought Katherine, the local clergy’s daughter, could help in future mysteries. She seems intelligent. It could be like those morning radio shows where there’s always two guys and one girl. But I digress. In summary, I enjoyed this mystery and will be reading the others in the series soon.

- Reviewed in the United States on April 12, 2024Think Starsky & Hutch but set in 19th century England. Jason Redmond, an American surgeon arriving to England to claim his father's estate and Daniel Haze, an English constable set in the idyllic town of Birch Hill together investigate the untimely death of a young Englishman found in the crypt of the local church.
This was a terrifically written story with great character development, full of plenty of twists and turns with murder, mystery and mayhem. I look forward to reading more in the Redmond and Haze Mysteries series by Irina Shapiro.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 16, 2024The partnership between Captain Redmond and Constable Haze to solve a murder was unexpected but has forged a camaraderie between the two. The readers are with them every step of the investigation and has tryly been very engaging.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 15, 2022This is book 1 of the Redmond and Haze series. This book has an audio file and is whisper synced. The narrator is Wendy Wolfson, who is a competent narrator. She has a pleasant voice, her cadence is easy to understand, however, she struggles with accents. I must listen carefully to hear the difference between her English and American accents. Also, male, and female voices are a stretch for her. If you want to hear a narrator who is better with accents, particularly American, listen to The Danger by Dick Francis, narrated by Tony Britton.
I find this plot too shallow for multiple reads. This first time is pleasant; beyond that it is nerve-wracking.
Her protagonists make an interesting team for the reader: Daniel Haze is a constable of a small English community. Dr. Jason Redmond is an American surgeon who has just inherited an English title. The difference in cultural background, education, and social standing make for an interesting tension even as the men are naturally drawn to each other in friendship.
Shapiro’s story line is competent; however, she is sloppy with details. In this book Dr. Jason Redmond checks the pulse of the victim to confirm death – on a corpse 12 hours old?! In another place, “‘E didn’t sound Scotch,’ Mrs. Harris replied, bristling.” Scotch is a whiskey. The nationality is Scottish. This is a distinction any Englishman would understand. And again, “He’d been lucky enough to be born into a well-to-do family, the only son of a school master”. In 1866, there was no universal education outside the church. The Education Act was passed in 1880. Also, if a school was paid for by the local inhabitants, the school master would not have been well paid. He might have had a rent-free house, and probably paid in kind by the students’ parents (eggs, bread, etc.)
Finally, Shapiro did pique my interest in the English police in the 1800’s. I found a very different picture than she describes. The salary for constables was not a living wage. They depended on “emoluments” during the course of their duty to make ends meet. Even Robert Peel, the father of the modern police force, thought this was a better method than salary. This historic feature would have added a richness to the narrative, or, perhaps, Shapiro thought it would make the plot too difficult.
If you want a mystery that is not very accurate historically, and don’t mind the slip in details, you will enjoy this.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 12, 2024I typically don't read books from this period but I really did enjoy this book. It grabbed my attention immediately, had the right amount of characters, good character development, the plot was easy to follow and it didn't drag out. I found myself not being able to put this book down and reading whenever I could steal a few moments. I guess I can conclude that I liked it! I will definitely read the next book by this author.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent. A gripping Victorian murder mystery.
What a great storyline, with strong characters and just the right amount of background information about them to add to the intrigue and suspense.
A well written , and cleverly crafted thriller that kept me completely engrossed from start to finish. One of the most unforgettable books I have read in a long time and I cannot wait to get my hands on the second book in the series which is due to be released in June.
In the meantime I have downloaded two other of this amazing and gifted author 's ghost stories which I am sure will prove to be the ultimate in spine tingling scary enjoyment.
I am now an avid fan and follower of Irena Shapiro. She is a skilled and awesome writer, and I wonder why I have never come across her extraordinary talent before.
