Victorian Pharmacy: Rediscovering Home Remedies and Recipes Hardcover – August 12, 2010

4.7 4.7 out of 5 stars 112 ratings

Providing hints, tips, recipes, and historical background, this book explains how many traditional remedies are still in use and how to make them at home Here is the story of consumer medicine—how drugstore healthcare emerged in just 50 years and how consumers still rely on hundreds of formulations and products that can trace their origins back to the 19th century. Sun cream; treatments for insomnia, dandruff, or warts; perfumes; and soaps are all as important today as they were 100 years ago and are stocked by the local pharmacist. This book takes a look at which products were on offer, whether they were effective, and how they are used today, showing that while the names of products on the pharmacy shelf have changed over time, consumers' hopes and aspirations remain much the same as their Victorian predecessors. This is also the story of the growth of the drugstore, and how families have come to rely upon them as dispensaries of healthcare.

Ouvrage qui fait suite à une série d'émissions diffusées sur la BBC. Excellent bilan sur la santé, la médecine et la pharmacopée ainsi que la place des pharmaciens dans l'Angleterre victorienne.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic account of Victorian Practices of the Era
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on January 4, 2011
This book is fantastic, it combines the history of the Victorian Pharmacy practices with a practical amount of knowledge also emparted in the process, safe recipies for the reader are provided - though I am yet to try and test some. Specific parts that appealed to me are the proverbs, snippets of history about the Bronte family that is not widely known, Henry the VIII and his dalinces which were treated with similar methods to the period and especially the way in which the modern practices we use today are very similar if governed better and Health and Saftey applied much more widely. Stories of Humbug Billy and the 100's of thousands of people murdered through "accidental" mistakes is both facinating and blood curdling. Recommended for any teenager also studing the period as part of GCSE's or at A-level a real eye opener, well written and engaging to any reader.

5.0 out of 5 stars Enjoyable and entertaining. Useful for those studying this era.

My daughter is studying Medicine Through Time for GCSE for this era, so I thought this book would be an interesting starting point, even though we missed the series. We have been reading it together and have found it has held our interest well. Some of the recipes included are entertainingly dangerous (with obvious warnings not to try them, although obtaining the ingredients would be unlikely) and sit alongside some interesting (safer) recipes which could be used today.
We have ordered the DVD. Despite getting it for study, it is a book I would have been glad to read anyway.
