- Reviewed in the United States on August 30, 2021Views of O'Flaherty too lenient of strangling role of Catholic church on the all too willing state post independence. 'Christ and Ceasar hand in glove and Protestants heretics though he does give credit to the southern Protestant writers and builders of best architecture in Ireland.

- Reviewed in the United States on November 25, 2011Shalom Freedman's appreciative review does justice to a great Irish writer who deserves a higher profile. I came across this book recently in an Oakland bookstore (Bibliomania) where I have found many remarkable books and look forward to browsing my way to many more 'finds'. Having read his 'King of the Beggars', the story of Daniel O'Connell, I was interested in anything by O'Faolain and this book attempts to pull together many strands in Ireland's long and remarkable history and use them to define the national character. Twentieth century Ireland enjoyed success through the work of several great writers. But there were many others whose names are less recognized or forgotten. Part of this is due to a cynical system of censorship which was a tool of religious hegemony and was at it's worst when this book was published in 1949. For such a dark time the book is fairly optimistic, all the more reason to read it today. The subjects O'Faolain discusses are familiar to anyone interested in Ireland and its history but he provides detail in a telling way and his writing is very beautiful. If you are struggling with Ulysses and wonder about the background to Joyce's great work, alike an exploration of national character, this book has much to offer. And if he covers some familiar ground, he does it with style and grace.
