Life skills for puppies - Laying the foundation for a loving, lasting relationship
Ensure your pup’s first meetings with other dogs are calm and controlled so that he is not frightened, and can learn safe and appropriate ways to greet. In this example a young pup is allowed to calmly approach a confident older dog which is known to behave well with puppies. Note that, in this case, the adult dog is held on a loose lead so that the situation can be more easily managed. The body language of both dogs indicates that they are comfortable and willing to interact.
Make sure that each new experience is positive. Always begin exposure to a new experience in a low-key way: for example, switch on the vacuum cleaner when it is at the opposite end of the room, whilst a helper distracts the pup by playing with him, or gives him a special treat to chew on. Switch it off after a few seconds and wait a while before repeating the experience.
Puppies need to learn to tolerate handling of all parts of their bodies by their owners as well as by strangers (vets and groomers, for example). With most puppies this is easily and readily learnt, as touch, in the main, will be a pleasurable experience for them. Continue to gently handle your dog all over his body throughout his life to help him remain tolerant of handling as a safe and pleasant experience.
Life skills for puppies - Laying the foundation for a loving, lasting relationship
This pup has been taught to come quickly when she hears her name, and she is now being taught to leave special chews and toys when called. When you begin to ask your pup to come back in more difficult situations, make sure that you reward her with especially good stuff to convince her that it is truly worthwhile. Remember: never call your pup if you think she won’t come, but instead go and fetch her so that she doesn’t practice ignoring you.
This puppy’s lowered head and nose lick gesture with the eyes focused ahead indicate that she is not comfortable with the situation. If you see this sort of body language in your puppy, assess what you need to do to make her feel more comfortable. For example, if she was looking at another dog approaching her bed, call the other dog away.
This person has understood the reason for the slightly worried look on the pup’s face as they bend over her on her bed, and is helping her feel more comfortable by approaching from the side, rather than reaching over her head, and feeding her a treat (overleaf).

- Reviewed in the United States on July 20, 2013This is a really well-written, well-organized book with some succinct yet really important info. It's a pretty quick read too. Wonderful for new puppy people who may get overwhelmed by the amount of info out there and touches on critical LIFE skills. Not limited to obedience behaviors but true life skills needed to help your pup develop in to a safe and confident adult who relates well to it's human family. I love the focus on relationships as well as the fundamental understanding of how puppies learn covered in this book. It'd make a great text-book for puppy class.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 12, 2018Best puppy book out there, I recommend this one to all my clients. I've read a lot of puppy books - I'm a veterinarian with a special interest in behavior. This one is not overwhelming and gets you off to a great start.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 21, 2013This book was recommended to us by a trainer helping us with some issues we were having with a 5mth old pup. The book went along hand in hand with her philosophy in what she was trying to train us as well as what our vet believes. Its simple and straight forward in its layout, easy to understand or use as a reference. It has room for notes or if you want to write down the progress your dog is making/skills accomplished.

When I ordered this book hoping to bring in a new dog, I didn't know its value. The authors' built-in checklists prove their knowledge of canines and canine learning.
Loved that the foreword by Jean Donaldson tells the reader that a dog lover should be concerned with fear in our puppies and dogs. Why? Fear behaviors start with growling, and snarling and then lead to snapping and biting. Too many big dogs lose their lives from biting accidents. We want our puppies to feel confident and free to sometimes say, no.
Repetition.
Kind and patient repetition of skills learning remains key to socializing and training a family dog.
There happen to be many styles and methods of training dogs. Unfortunately, Animal Shelters and the Humane Society report homeless canines as 3.1 million in the U.S.A. Plus, each year in the U.S., 3.9 million dogs are abandoned or given to shelters. Shocking facts.
We dog lovers need to do a much better job socializing and training our best friends.

Images in this review - Reviewed in the United States on April 23, 2017Interesting perspective on early training stages for dogs. However while the theory behind how to approach early training is great, the instructions on how to do this are not so straightforward. The authors present training in a non-sequential format that is extrememly cumbersome to the new pet owner. The only way to follow through with the training is to create and follow multiple charts and mark progress with multiple tasks in a given day. So its a great theory that needs to consider the trainer as thoroughly as it considers the dog.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 22, 2016This is one of my favorite puppy books. It has great pictures to help new owners understand your puppy's body language and the exercises. It is well thought out and well organized. Every new puppy owner should read this and reference it.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 7, 2019This book is such a wealth of information about how to raise a healthy, well-adjusted dog. It gives great examples of the skill sets puppies need to learn when they are puppies to avoid the problems that older dogs can exhibit. Following this book would make for a much better adjusted, happier dog.

5.0 out of 5 stars Ten key life skills all puppies need to become happy, behaviorally healthy adult dogs!
This book is a little different than most puppy-training books, as it focuses on key life skills rather than basic obedience. However, puppy owners would be wise to add this book to their must-read reading list, as the concepts within are critical to raising a behaviorally healthy adult dog. If this was required reading for all puppy owners there would be far fewer behavior problems seen in the canine population.

5.0 out of 5 stars A definitive guide for first time dog owners...
Life skills for puppies is a must-read for for first time puppy owners. I have never had a puppy before and this book made me feel a lot more confident about the big move to get the dog. It focuses on the behaviour of dogs and how you interpret and react to it. If you want a book about how to teach your dog to leave it, sit, stay, lie down etc. etc. I wouldn't recommend it however for first time dog owners who need a little bit of reassurance and guidance I would thoroughly recommend it. Life skills for puppies is well structured, easy to read and simple to dip in and out of as you wish. There is also an invaluable section at the end about loose lead walking but the rest of the book is brilliant as well with each chapter revealing a new life skill. It focuses not only on obedience but also the dog being able to control itself which helps in training and general dog life but as I said if you want a training or dog care guide this book isn't for you but I would highly recommend it for all dog owners especially first time ones like me. I am only 13 and I found this book really helpful. I hope this review helped. ;)

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book
This book is perfect for pet dog owners. It identifies the key skills that they need to know to raise a confident puppy. I teach puppy classes and loan a copy of this book to each of my students; some of whom went on to purchase a copy of the book for themselves.
