Fishnet Kindle Edition

3.9 3.9 out of 5 stars 187 ratings

A “thoughtful, bruising, poignant, and poetic” (Ian Rankin) debut in which a woman’s search for her missing sister leads her into the world of contemporary sex work.

Rona Leonard was only twenty-years-old when she walked out of her sister Fiona’s flat and disappeared.

Six years later—worn down by a tedious job, childcare, and an aching absence in her life—Fiona’s mundane existence is blown apart by the revelation that Rona had been working as a prostitute before she vanished. Driven to discover the truth, Fiona embarks on an obsessive quest to investigate the sex industry that claimed her sister. However, as she is drawn into this complex world, Fiona finds herself seduced by the power it offers women in a society determined to see them only as victims.

In bold, unflinching prose,
Fishnet offers a clear-eyed look at the lives of sex workers, questioning our perception of contemporary femininity and challenging assumptions about power, vulnerability, and choice.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"Fishnet contains many more instances of gritty brilliance following its dramatic start… Fishnet is one of those rare and refreshing crime novels in which the victim isn’t victimized, and where her life and community are as important as the mystery of her disappearance."
New York Times Book Review

"Thoughtful, bruising, poignant, and poetic."
—Ian Rankin

"
Fishnet is a determined debut from an inimitable talent. Kirstin Innes takes the reader on a remarkable, authentic journey into the contemporary realm of prostitution."
—Lisa O'Donnell, nationally bestselling author of The Death of Bees

"Bold, sensual, and unflinching,
Fishnet lays bare a world too often misjudged and misunderstood. Kirstin Innes writes with courage, warmth, and real insight. This is a hugely enjoyable and important book."
—Emma Jane Unsworth, award-winning author of Animals

"It's dark and provocative, and it holds its gaze steady on the sex industry. Here's a new writer with huge talents and promise."
—Sarah Hall, author of The Electric Michelangelo, a Man Booker Prize finalist

"Innes strikes sparks by rubbing a clandestine world (here, prostitution in Scotland) against the everyday. Unsettling and seductive, this tale of two sisters is moving, gripping, and unforgettable."
The Independent

"[
Fishnet] asks difficult and brave questions about prostitution . . . Innes presents convincing characters, living believable lives, and so she is able to dig deeper into these emotive issues than facts and stats alone can hope to go."
The Guardian

"It's extremely rare for a novel actually to change public attitudes, but
Fishnet already has."
The Herald

"[S]et to be a massive hit and deserves every ounce of that success."
The Huffington Post

Fast confirmation, prompt delivery and the condition of the book was as described in the post. Great service!

The blurb for Fishnet had me expecting a plot-driven, twisty mystery: Woman explores the seedy underbelly of a city in search of her missing sister, a prostitute. Instead it's something more cerebral, more real, and much less salacious. Yes, the narrator is seeking her sister, a prostitute, but rather than entering the cliched world of strung-out streetwalkers she meets up with women who view sex work as a career, an empowering, more lucrative alternative to other jobs open to those with minimal qualifications. The book veers a bit polemic at times, but overall it's a well-drawn, lived-in story of a woman who learns how to take a proactive, rather than reactive, approach to her life, and the depiction of modern-day Scotland seems spot-on. I definitely recommend, so long as you don't expect a flashy commercial treatment.

Thank you, NetGalley and Gallery/Scott Press, for providing me with an advanced copy in exchange for an honest review.

Interesting novel about the world of sex workers, although I did not feel as invested in the plot than I would have liked. I was disappointed with the way the plot evolved and how the story ended.

It’s a great book that I am happy to now own. The book came super early, and is in great condition. Came with a small Italian cook book that I didn’t order, but that’s not really a bad thing

This storyline was very good and the author has exceptional writing skills. I did find it hard to follow in spots because the POV jumps and sometimes I had to adjust my thinking. Overall it was an enjoyable read.
Many thanks to Galley Pocket Books and to NetGalley for providing me with a galley in exchange for my honest opinion.

Anticlimactic honestly. Just wasn’t my cup of tea. I’m sure others found this book to be great but just wasn’t for me.

Well read. Interesting education re: sex workers. Unfullfilling ending to the story.

I read this as I had enjoyed Scabby Queen so much. What a thought provoking book. It has opened my eyes to a whole industry which so many of us pretend doesn't exist. It has made me look at the sex industry in a completely new light. The book is never patronising and doesn't comprise the people who are involved. A book everyone should read.

4.0 out of 5 stars An interesting and challenging read

I read this after reading the amazing 'Scabby Queen ' by the same author. It certainly challenged some of my preconceived notions about women and sexuality and the 'sex industry'.Kirsten Innes clearly did a massive amount of research, which rather contradicted my observations while living in Leith near the red light district for many years. An interesting, thought provoking read.I eagerly await her next book.

I couldn't put this book down. Riveting and eye opening; should be required reading on social work courses. Maybe it is? I hope so!

1.0 out of 5 stars Not Recommended- A Rather Confusing Account about Prostitution in Scotland
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on April 16, 2019
Very difficult to understand, particularly the beginning and that is down to the writing style. Also, there’s not much of a storyline and what storyline there is confuses with the constant backwards and forwards between times.
So....... Fiona is searching for her sister Rona, who has been missing for 6 years. Rona had turned to prostitution and after dumping her baby with Fiona is gone. Fiona then ‘sort of’ infiltrates the prostitute community in order to find her sister. Eventually, Fiona takes up the profession herself. That’s about it.
There’s graphic sexual scenes, which may not appeal to some. My main criticism is lack of plot and maybe, the use of sex to shock. I think the author’s intention was to highlight that many women choose prostitution as a career and as such should be treated fairly.
I didn’t find the book interesting and thought it a confusing account about nothing.
