Little Bird Hardcover – March 20, 2012
A man drives his truck up to a cliff's edge. Unable to go any further, he opens the back door of his truck and a flock of birds flies out, but, as the man soon discovers, a small timid bird remains. Surprised and delighted, the man acts kindly towards the bird and an intimacy develops. After lunch, the man tries to show the bird that he should fly off and join his friends. The man's comic attempt at flight deepens the encounter between these two very different creatures. Soon the bird flies off and the man drives away, but in a surprise twist the bird and his friends return, and in a starkly lyrical moment we see them all experience something entirely new.

Editorial Reviews
Review
"Uplifting in more ways than one, this prizewinning import suggests that little things can change lives - and perhaps even the world." - Starred Review, Kirkus Reviews
"Children's picture books -- the best of them, at least -- have this magical quality of speaking to young hearts with expressive simplicity, but also engaging grown-up minds with subtle reflections on the human condition. Such is the case of Little Bird (public library) by Swiss author-illustrator duo Germano Zullo and Albertine, published by the wonderful Enchanted Lion Books. Illustrated in Albertine's signature style of soft, colorful minimalism, this little gem is like a beautiful silent film, only in vibrant hues and on paper." -- Brain Pickings
"An impressive picture book that is modern, fresh and will have readers looking for tiny treasures in their lives too." - Waking Brain Cells
"I'm a big fan of Brooklyn-based publishing company Enchanted Lion [...] they always have excellent taste in artists and unique storytellers. Their latest release, a prizewinning Swiss import [Little Bird], is no exception." - Ben Partridge, Apartment Therapy
"It's high time we here in the U.S. started paying better attention to books published internationally.
Take for instance, Little Bird, winner of the 2011 Prix Sorcières for illustration (the French Caldecott).
Yes, the book is visually stunning. It's clear why it won an award for illustrations. But it's a great story, too. About the small things in life. About keeping your eyes open for the little ways that make every day different, unique, and a day to be treasured." -- A Year of Reading

- Reviewed in the United States on June 25, 2014This is such a great find! The illustrations are magical, and the story is absolutely lovely. I have already given one as a gift (to another adult who also adored it). This will be kept on my favorite shelf for a long, long time. I also sense I'll be buying more as gifts (I had put a moratorium on buying books -- I have a lot of books -- but am so glad I made an exception and purchased this little gem). Books are magic, but this one especially. Recommend!
- Reviewed in the United States on June 8, 2013This exquisite picture book must be savored slowly. Each page is simple and as the pages are turned the reader (few words in print but many in your mind) sees a story unfolding between the truck driving man and a small bird he finds in the back. I won't spoil the plot but it is transformative. It makes the point that kindness in small ways and for small things can change everything. WONDERFUL book.

- Reviewed in the United States on January 9, 2015This is a sweet book. It is a little abstract, but would be a great way to converse with children about kindness, patience, encouragement, and friendship. The pictures are lovely in their simplicity.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 28, 2012I first "read" the book to my 3 year old son by talking through the pictures - I didn't realize that the text was there until half way through because it isn't on every page. He loved the book, wanted to talk about it and then asked me to reread it to him several times. The second time, I actually read the text and I fell in love with the beautiful message of the book - which reads like a poem. Highly recommended. It has become a favorite for both of us!
- Reviewed in the United States on January 19, 2013Beautiful book. Beautiful artistry and just a lovely story. I read it to the kids in a preschool, and was moved by it and got it for my mother. Arrive promptly and well packaged.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 12, 2023At first I didn’t understand this book, yet I had an emotional reaction. I returned to it many times across different days and shared it with others. The images are art, and the text is poetry. The combination is masterful and powerful. I recommend this book for all ages.

The expressions on the faces of man and tiny bird are priceless, and the love expressed by the surprise ending will bring a smile and warm any heart. A great gift book!

5.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful book,
This is a very special book with a wonderful message about friendship and happiness in moments of our lives. My children, 4 and 5, loved taking in and describing the story as it develops. This book has become very special to us, as we have a special love of birds!
