‘OMG!!! SHUT THE FRONT DOOR!!!… The most heart-racing book I’ve read in a long time, if not ever!!! It had me hook, line and sinker from the first page and I could not put it down!!!… Clear your day because it is truly unputdownable… What an absolute twist!!!… If you read one book in your life, make sure it is this!!!!’ Bookworm86, ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Sometimes, the most perfect families are hiding the most terrible secrets. How well do you know the people next door…?

Everybody wants to live on Hogarth Street, the pretty, tree-lined avenue with its white houses. The new family,
the Wests, are a perfect fit. Katherine and John seem so in love and their gorgeous five-year-old twins race screeching around their beautiful emerald-green lawn.

But soon people start to notice: why don’t they join backyard barbecues? Why do they brush away offers to babysit? Why, when you knock at the door, do they shut you out, rather than inviting you in?

Every family has secrets, and on the hottest day of the year, the truth is about to come out. As a tragedy unfolds behind closed doors, the dawn chorus is split by the wail of sirens. And one by one the families who tried so hard to welcome the Wests begin to realise: Hogarth Street will never be the same again.

A completely gripping, twist-packed psychological thriller, perfect for fans of Liane Moriarty, Sally Hepworth and Lisa Jewell.

Nicole Trope went to university to study Law but realised the error of her ways when she did very badly on her first law essay because-as her professor pointed out- 'It's not meant to be a story.' Unputdownable! Too bad it’s a fast read.

Unputdownable! Too bad it’s a fast read.
One of the things I love when cracking open a new novel (literally, i have to hold it in my hand, smell and touch the pages) and see the words leaping out at me that way. It’s how quickly you find yourself getting absorbed into the story. Even though I read through several reviews that had stated this, I am always one to say just because someone else loved a story doesn’t mean I will also. It also doesn’t mean I will be absorbed into the story right from the start.I can with most certainty guarantee you that you will keep turning the pages to see what is happening next. I walk around with my iPad constantly, to the point I bring it to the dinner table. I guess it’s a bit like other people and their phones. But since I received this paperback, I haven’t honestly been able to put it down except to go to the restroom. If I wasn’t so grossed out about germs and such I would probably have brought it in there. It’s that good. Being on a lot of meds I have to nap plus being ill. But if I were able to stay awake as I did years ago when younger this would have been one of those paperback I would have read in one sitting. The story is fast paced. Takes twist and turns you find unexpected. Has a point in there that I absolutely did not see coming and such charming characters and characters I found such hatred for that I felt like I was equating them to people I know in my life. That to me is reflective of a truly gifted author who can not only describe her character but have them seem like they have become part of your life. While I live in the USA and this took place in Australia which for me is on the opposite side of the world and I haven’t much knowledge of, I found not only some of the written language a bit funny such as BLOKE where as we would say BRO or FLAT for APARTMENT, MUM for MOM, and missing some words from sentences such as the word THE. They say going to University. Or getting out of Hospital. So reading this way was just a bit of a different experience for me. I enjoyed it and am glad for the experience. I feel that even if you are unable to afford the book try to make every effort to either see if you can get it used or borrow from the Library. You will enjoy it and it’s one of those novels that will stay with you not only because of the subject matter and this being May which is Metal Health Month but because the story itself is very well written.

When I read the description on the back cover I was so excited to read this book. I didn’t realize it was based in Australia so I was confused at 1st when they mentioned weather/temperatures but I quickly realized they must be referring to Celsius rather than Fahrenheit temps (I live in the U.S).

The books switches between different characters’ viewpoints, which adds to the suspense and mystery a little bit. But it also starts to feel like a frustrating read about halfway through. In the conclusion, it makes sense as to why it is written the way it is, but I’ll admit that it felt a little complicated and confusing at times.

In short, I would recommend the book to friends, but I would warn them that
    1. The description on the back cover is somewhat misleading

    And
    2. It becomes a little frustrating with the scattered storylines and it almost feels like work to carry on reading at times
BUT, if they power through the challenging parts, it will be worth it once you see the full picture.

Also, it does feel like the ending was a bit rushed but I don’t want to be too critical. Overall, I was satisfied with my purchase and I don’t have any regrets buying/reading this book!

The Family Across the Street, was my first exposure to author Nicole Trope, but will not be my last. I have already purchased her book, The Boy in the Photo.

This 249-page suspense novel kept me glued to my chair rapidly reading through the wee hours of the morning and wishing I would have begun reading it earlier in the day.

Trope knows how to grab the reader at the onset and hold on to the reader throughout the entire compelling tale.

At times I was a bit confused by characters; however, I figured it out and I realize that was the author’s ingenious intent.

Set-in modern-day Australia the story begins with two dysfunctional families. Logan and his sister, Maddy’s parents were terrible parents that had a negative impact on their children’s lives. Their father always said that Logan would end up in jail. Associating with the wrong people, Logan did end up going to jail after home invasions and smoking a powerful drug. Maddy ended up with Patrick a young man who was severely abused by his father. Patrick’s mom and dad divorced, and his father later committed suicide, but not before he manipulated Patrick into believing that his mother was the source of all of his problems. Maddy ended up in a Melbourne hospital on life support with an induced coma after Patrick beat her nearly to death.

Another family, Katherine and John were having troubles of their own. Katherine believed that John was having an affair after she saw heart emojis on his cell phone texts. The strain of raising their 5-year-old twins, George and Sophie was negatively impacting their family and they seemed to be falling out of love with each other. After their elderly neighbors, Lou and Gladys heard John’s tires squealing as he left for work Gladys became annoyed. When she noticed that the Katherine and John’s blinds were closed and the children had not left for school, she worried that something was not right at Katherines home. Likewise, Debby’s husband Logan, a postal worker was concerned when he tried to deliver a laptop to Katherine's address. She refused to open the door for a signature resulting in him unable to deliver the computer. As he continued his postal route, he began to think something was wrong at that address. When he tried again, he heard a child at the door make a remark that amplified that concern.

The remainder of the tale deals with suspenseful happenings within Katherine’s home and Gladys and Logan worrying about it.

This is an enthralling suspense thriller that I recommend as a must read to fans of this genre. It is the best that I have read in years.

I loved this book because it was fast moving and kept my interest. The chapters flow into each other nicely and there isn't any unnecessary descriptions (eg: trees, birds, what people were wearing etc). The characters are interesting and kind of sad in some ways. If you like a good drama/mystery I think you will enjoy reading this book. I'm already trying to decide which book to order next.
