Alexander Mathanach is a Scottish knight; a man of noble birth haunted by a tragic event in his past. Those he loved betrayed him and almost destroyed his faith. Yet, despite his bitterness, he fulfilled the vow he made. As promised, he took the orphaned child from the abbey and raised her as his own, choosing to live a quiet life in the depths of a remote, northern forest. But Alexander is guardian to more than a young girl. He is also the keeper of a divine artifact, one that draws a terrible evil to his secluded doorstep. When his peaceful life is destroyed, he is forced to seek help from a powerful group of knights, who join his fight to save those he loves. But in doing so, Alexander is obliged to revisit his past and face a possibility he has long denied. What if he wasn't betrayed? What if those he loved had not lied?It would mean that a miracle occurred on a starry night, long ago. Which would also mean that Alexander made a dreadful mistake. If so, then how, by all things sacred under Heaven, can he ever hope to make amends?

This is the most WONDERFUL BOOK!!
I felt so many emotions. At times I couldn’t take the ugliness of what was going on and had to put it down a few minutes. It is a beautiful story! The characters are amazing. Each one so alive and incredible in their unique personalities. I’m in awe of the ability of Avril Borthiry!! She knows how to bring characters alive with their mannerisms and speech. From the lovely to the demonic she captures each one. She describes their looks and we see their character in their actions. The story line is incredible and goes from A to Z. So much is going on. The love, the hatred, the fear, anger, humor, the devotion, the sorrow, the joy and any other emotion you can identify is within this story. Not only are the characters alive, but her description of each scene places you right there. Her style and depth really speaks to me and moves me so much I wanted to underline much of the book. Absolutely beautiful!! What a gift!! Now I must decide which book to read next. None of them have let me down.

First, mechanics: very few editing errors, fleshed out characters (even secondary), and respect for the reader's intelligence (i.e. no broken plot lines, nothing left unfinished).

Now to the story. The love between the main characters is clean and pure. Only a few scenes were lurid, but were used to develop the characters they included. This book could have been twice as long and still been enjoyable - there's so much more I want to know about Stephen, about his siblings, about Anne, and of course, The Guardians. I read this book in two days and am left wanting more, which is always a good sign. Would love to learn more about several of the secondary characters especially Emma's grandfather. I hope to see many more books in this series - it's difficult to find good writers with good stories to tell these days. I look forward to observing Avril's development as an author, she's already a great storyteller! Will be buying other books of hers that are not novellas (anything with less than 500 pages, is just too short).

A 'can't put down read' I was hooked from the start. The writer has a knack of putting you right in the scene. Love the characters - even the secondary ones, who add so much to this tale. The plot is credible without being predictable. The romance is touching and the magic is cleverly done. Th bad guy really is bad - there are some hard-hitting sections in this book, but the ending is touching and very satisfying.

I can't even think of the words to describe my feelings for this work of art. Avril Borthiry astounds me with her imagination and her ability to put it in words. The depth in the development of the characters in this Medieval tale is fascinating. The hero, Alex, is such a torchered soul, I couldn't help but hope for his HEA even as it was looking impossible. I loved the secondary hero as the young knight, Stephen who falls hopelessly in love with the heroine, Emma.
Argante must be one of the most vile and evil villains I have ever read about in a historical romance. His evil intent and obsession with Emma is difficult to read at times but when he gets his due it is very satisfying.
I can't say enough great things about this book and the author and hope you get a chance to read and enjoy one of my favorites. I will also encourage you to try any book written by this author, I have loved them all.

I'm not quite sure what drew me to this book because normally I would be very skeptical of a self-published work, but whether it was the medieval time frame or the promise of a Scottish hero ,I'm very glad I purchased it. Firstly, let me say, it has a great cover to perfectly illustrate the story and secondly, it is very well written and edited. I truly loved it. From the first page you are hooked and it is very hard to put down. A real page turner; I couldn't wait to get back to it each day and finished it in too short a time, almost wanting to reread it so I could stay with all the characters. Even the secondary characters are fascinating. The writing is poetic and the situations cruel. I could not figure how the heroine was going to have a HEA but the tale has a mystical quality to it that is very well done. The disturbingly evil villain completes the cast of characters. More a love story than a romance; I recommend dipping your toe in the mystical pages of The Cast of A Stone.

I read lots of books in lots of different genres. I am not a big romance reader nor a big mythical reader. However there was something about this book that intrigued me. I’m so glad I purchased it and glad I bought the actual book. This story was needed to be read holding a physical book. The feel of the weight in my hands and the rapid page turning increased the captivating tale of knights, heroines, legends and yes love. Like all good books the characters came alive, the settings became real and it left me wanting more and a little remorseful to tell them all goodbye at the end. I recommend this book to anyone; male, female, thriller readers, historical fiction buffs, and especially to the “I don’t do magic stuff” people, this book might just make you believe in a little bit of the unbelievable.

5.0 out of 5 stars A stone with a heart!
Reviewed in Canada on October 3, 2019
Avril Borthiry has proven herself to be a talented and skilled story teller. Worthy of a sigh from beginning to end. Except for the moments I needed a break from reading after reading about the evil villain of the story. I truly hated HIM! Oh my gosh, he is horrid. If you can get around the truly evil character and enjoy a story filled with Scottish accents, damsels in distress who are actually kick-ass and never give up strong female role models. Oh and don't forget the knight in shining armor, and a secret magical society. Borthiry ties up each story line in neat little bundles for a happily ever after ending. I recommend this book. Yes I do!

5.0 out of 5 stars A bit of magic...
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on August 8, 2014
A thoroughly enjoyable read. Vivid characters, and more than a little magic to make the story special. A tale of family secrets, mysterious powers, romance, drama, suspense, action, and plenty of chilling, nail-biting moments. Throughout the book I found myself thinking what a fine film it would make, so clearly could I "see" what was happening. A different and very welcome reading pleasure.
