- Reviewed in the United States on March 5, 2023The USMC doesn't hand out medals lighty. In reading this book, keep in mind that a significant number of the Marines who served in the battles listed in this book, probably did things that merited a Bronze Star, at a minimum. For those who WERE awarded medals, those medals should probably have been upgraded at LEAST one level higher. Hundreds sustained wounds that merited Purple Hearts, but most seemed to feel those that only "serious" wounds deserved it and declined the medal.
But this isn't about medals. At the very least, I feel these men deserve our gratitude and respect, and certainly not the scorn, derision and ridicule they received upon returning home. This war is a stain on our national conscience, but those at fault are the politicians who created it.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 23, 2022This is a different type of war novel. It seemed to be same oh same for a time until you pay attention to the details. These deaths left holes in the hearts of many Marines. So many of our young men died or were wounded. What I realized was the fact that these men were too young to buy a beer in the United States but old enough to die in a foreign country. Think about that!
- Reviewed in the United States on December 12, 2022I served in 3/26 Marines at the same time. The book described all that we went through. Well written and spot on.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 26, 2021Plenty of errors. But overall good..
You Marines will see it right away.
Spelling was the biggest problem.
Thank you

- Reviewed in the United States on February 2, 2015This book is an interesting read. It is not a rehash of the Vietnam War as told by historians, or politicians, or generals. It is the experience of a young man and and his fellow marines as they dealt with jungle warfare. Hoffman tells his story well as he conveys to the reader his uncertainties and fears, and even adds some humor. I think this book will help those who did not serve in Vietnam, like myself, to understand the situation these young men faced and endured. This is an excellent book and I highly recommend it.
