The New York Times–bestselling author of The Eagle Has Landed delivers a pulse-pounding story of a father out for revenge against a master assassin.

John Mikali is known throughout the world as a brilliant concert pianist and playboy. But his true vocation is far more interesting and lucrative: He is a peerless international assassin. His music and fame give him entrée to complete his assignments all over the world without fail. He believes himself truly untouchable—until he makes one fatal mistake.

Col. Asa Morgan is a military man to the bone. A veteran of wars both declared and undeclared, he’s one of the most respected and lethal members of the British SAS, and utterly devoted to his country. But when his daughter is run down and killed by an unknown assassin making his escape, his sworn duty no longer matters. Now, his only mission is to find the killer before the authorities do—and make him suffer as long as possible before death.

Morgan and Mikali will stalk each other across continents, from bloody back alleys to gilded halls in a deadly game in which each man is both the hunter and the hunted. And only the winner walks away.

Recognized as one of the finest thriller writers of our time, the international bestselling author of the Sean Dillon and Liam Devlin series delivers “unadulterated macho adventure (and) suspense” (
Houston Post).

There is a brilliance about this book because of the unique story that keeps once riveted, you move with the characters, especially Asa Morgan who sweeps you up into his own emotions which are right, and he knows only one way to resolve it.

I've read numerous books by this author. They are all, like this one, excellent, well written, fast paced, & with well developed characters you begin to actually care about. They are about the perfect length & Higgins focuses on the plot (unlike some famous spy thriller authors that get so swept up in technical specifics, their books become ponderous). His simple bare bones style keeps it moving & keeps you entertained. The only complaint which is one more of the genre than the book, is that like most spy thriller plots, they become predictable.

I enjoyed this story and its characters very much. Lots of detail on how the villain came to be and why maybe he's not such a villain. Yet, when he and the hero go at it, I still rooted for the hero, so well done Mr. Higgins. I love reading about Mr. Higgins's English, Irish, and European characters, and this book kept that going.

John Mikali is a master of music and murder. Asa Morgan fought his way out a brutally harsh Welsh mining town to become a top special forces agent. When Mikali accidentally kills Morgan's teen aged daughter during a getaway, the men are on a collision course.

First published in 1989, this book shows it age. Mikali is by far the most interesting character in the book. He is a high achiever, accepting no less than perfectiion in all his endeavours. Orphaned at young age, he loses the people who care the most for him, his wealthy and powerful Greek grandfather, his maternal grandmother and the Cretan peasant woman who nurtures him from childhood on. Only assasination can make him feel alive.

Unfortunately Morgan is far less compelling. I was never convinced of any great paternal love or even relationship with his daughter. She was incidental., perhaps a possession of Morgan's and a device to keep the story moving. He is just a brute somewhat refined by rubbing shoulders with the hierarchy of the spy world.

Even less developed is Kate, the psychologist and specialist in terrorism. Women rarely play much of a role in novels of this genre but she is so bland it is inconceivable that two men of the caliber of Mikali and Morgan would be fascinated by her.

There are way too many other characers. None of them, save Mikali's Russian handler, is memorable. Indeed, in many ways despite the action, the book is itself bloodless(which is not to say that there is not plenty of bloodshed). The main characters are not motivated by any passion or beliefs. They are above politics but into the art of the game. Perhpas Wall Street would be a more fitting milieu.

This is not a terrible book, just dated and uneven. Morgan who is presumably the "good guy" is really no match for Mikali. but even though it is predictable, it is still worth a read.

As a musician who has written a similar novel, Natalie's Revenge (A Frank Renzi mystery), I was eager to read Solo, by Jack Higgins. He's one of my favorite authors and I couldn't resist the piano on the cover. The opposing forces in this dark tale are two men bent on revenge. One is a concert pianist, an unlikely calling for a hit man, but one that provides a perfect cover as he plays concerts in various cities, where he kills people.

His pursuer, a British Intelligence agent described by one of his colleagues as "a right bastard," is determined to capture the man who killed his daughter.

The backgrounds of both men are carefully detailed to reveal their motives. A winsome woman psychologist provides a major complication when she becomes the love interest of both men. The action-packed opening creates the crisis that drives this book to its tense concluding showdown, an ending in which there are no winners. Great action scenes and plenty of plot twists! -- Susan Fleet, author of the Frank Renzi mystery series

I rarely read this genre, but I was in the mood for an escape from reality. The fact that the central character is a world class pianist was the primary attraction of this particular book for me. Strangely, the musical aspect of the story turned out to be the biggest obstacle to my suspension of disbelief. The notion that someone, even a very talented musician, could leave music, join the French Foreign Legion, and then return to music without any apparent difficulty is harder to accept that the elements of the thriller that comprises the primary story. The world is well populated by very talented and accomplished musicians. It takes more than talent to become a concert artist of international standing. Once such standing is achieved, it is very easy to lose the audience. Further, the picture of how a concert artist functions was a great stretch. Read this book for the main mystery, but if you are familiar with the world of classical music performance, be prepared to struggle with that aspect of the book.

My abs favorite Jack Higgins book. Sentimental touching story, embroiled in a typical Higgins turn a page thriller. Nice Easy Satisfying reading. Enjoyed it thoroughly. Much too expensive though. Wait for the price to come to a reasonable paper back level, then rush to the bookstore.
