About the author
As a life-long child protection advocate, Jon Holsten is an internationally recognized speaker and children's book author. A retired police sergeant and child sex crimes investigator from Fort Collins, Colorado, Jon has investigated and helped successfully prosecute dozens of child sexual abuse cases.
His experiences on the front lines of law enforcement have led Jon to seek new ways to protect children from predators. His research and passion led him to create the wildly popular children's book: The Swimsuit Lesson.
Beautifully written and illustrated, The Swimsuit Lesson helps parents talk to their young children about privacy, modesty, and those who might do them harm. The book has been featured on ABC's Good Morning America, numerous local media outlets and even caught the attention of the Oprah Winfrey Show.
Through his writing and speaking, Jon demonstrates his passion for helping parents protect their children from predators. A doting dad himself, Jon and his wife, Ceri, have six children of their own.

- Reviewed in the United States on July 28, 2015This is an update to my earlier review, which is intact below. The author was made aware of my review and surprise about the prayer scene in the book, and noted that it must have been an older edition of the book. He replaced the book with the newer version, which doesn't have the religious scene in it... and sent a signed copy. Much appreciated!
:-)
Original review:
The story is simple and the illustrations are engaging. One of the major scenes in the book to help other victims of abuse, though, involves the mom sitting with her children on the floor and praying "that God will keep children safe and that all kids will have someone to tell if they are touched in a wrong way." On one hand, I think this is an especially important and powerful scene, considering that many children are abused by people in their faith communities, and this scene makes it clear that this is not God's will, and they should still report it. On the other hand, I didn't know I was buying a religious book. I wanted a book that my entire family would be comfortable reading with the children, and not everyone in my family would be comfortable with that scene... and we're not a family that does spontaneous prayer in that way.
Finally, I like the concept of a swimsuit to let children know which parts are private parts. I wish the girl's swimsuit was a bikini instead of a one-piece, though. My kids are still toddlers with adorable, big, round bellies. We poke their bellies and kiss them and do all sorts of things that we would never do to their tender private parts. I don't want my daughter to think that her belly is somehow more private than her brother's belly is. So, a bikini would be better for the book's illustrations.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 10, 2014I bought 3 of these - one for my sister-in-law to share w/ the kids and 2 for friends to share with their families (I already had a copy) my kids really enjoy reading this book - it keeps the explanations simple for them to understand. We read it on a regular basis to keep it fresh in their minds what is okay and what is not.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 8, 2018Well written, clear message that is SO IMPORTANT and is communicated in a way that even my little kiddos can understand. Great parents guide at the end.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 27, 2014I have become an advocate for victims of child sexual abuse from a personal experience. I was very naive and never imagined this could happen in my family and now realize it was the unawareness and lack of knowledge that causes this epidemic to continue.
I wish I would have had this type of tool to help protect my little girls. I buy 10 of these at a time to help young Moms address this very needed discussion with their children. It's the best I've seen on the topic.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 29, 2016A helpful book for explaining to young children how to keep themselves safe from people who intend them harm. As a parent and an educator who has worked with children for many years, I appreciate the simple way the author presents the subject, without inducing fear.

- Reviewed in the United States on July 26, 2016Great book for helping children to learn about what body parts should not be touched by others. Great way to help prevent sexual abuse/ensure that your child is able to understand that some parts are not for touching. I read this to my three year old
- Reviewed in the United States on April 12, 2019I would recommend this book to anyone trying to teach their young children the difference between appropriate and inappropriate touches.
