Product Description

In 1940, Hans and Margret Rey fled their Paris home as the German army advanced. They began their harrowing journey on bicycles, pedaling to Southern France with children’s book manuscripts among their few possessions.

Louise Borden combed primary resources, including Hans Rey’s pocket diaries, to tell this dramatic true story. Archival materials introduce readers to the world of Hans and Margret Rey while Allan Drummond dramatically and colorfully illustrates their wartime trek to a new home.

Follow the Reys' amazing story in this unique large format book that resembles a travel journal and includes full-color illustrations, original photos, actual ticket stubs and more. A perfect book for Curious George fans of all ages.

Amazon Exclusive: An Introduction and Photos from Louise Borden, Author of The Journey of Curious George

Imagine our world without the famous little monkey Curious George!

He's a character that so many of us have grown up with, and like George, all of us are curious about the world in varying ways. Sometimes our explorations as kids and adults lead to hilarious mishaps or inspiring adventures. Sometimes our curiosity can change the world in amazing ways.

As a writer of children's books, I went on my own journey of antics and adventures in piecing together the long ago and unknown story of Margret and H. A. Rey's wartime escape from Paris in June of 1940.

Like George, I turned new corners and met new people who helped me. I traveled to exciting new places and learned new skills.

In the end, everything seemed to turn out well...just as it does for George.

Now, because of my curiosity, you, too, and everyone else, can know about the Reys' life story before they became famous and successful children's book creators. You can learn about George's first early escapes in The Journey That Saved Curious George.

The Reys honeymooned at the Terrass Hotel in Paris At the very beginning of World War II, the Reys spent several months at a chateau in the south of France The Reys passed through Acquebouille as they fled from the German army A map of the route that the Reys followed

A copy of the Reys' very first book for children, about a giraffe and nine monkeys The Rey Archives in Hattiesburg, Mississippi. Notice my detective's magnifying glass! Lay Lee Ong, executor of the Reys' estate Students love to learn about the wartime journey that Margret and Hans took

Born (Oct 30,1949) and raised in Cincinnati, I have lived in Ohio my entire life except for two years in Massachusetts right after I was married. Growing up in an old house on a steep street, I attended a small elementary school called Lotspeich. There, all the marvelous shelves of books in the library shaped me into a lifelong reader. So it is a thrill for me to know that some of my books are being read by children in other libraries all over the country.

Before I became a full-time writer and speaker, I taught preschoolers and first graders and was even a part-owner of a bookstore in Cincinnati.

Today, it is hard for me to separate my writing from the way I live my life. My own family, personal experiences, and friendships, as well as a love of history and travel, have rich and lasting connections to the books I write. The first impulse to write a book is always triggered by something that has touched me indelibly.

In addition to my writing, my work in schools allows me to travel the incredible variety of landscape in Ohio, and meet the heart of its people. I have spoken in over 400 schools across the country, but mostly in Ohio. Because of this, I now have lifelong friends in communities from mighty Cleveland to small-town Greenville.

Very small format of an excellent book.

Very small format of an excellent book.
This is a much smaller format book, more like a thin hardcover novel, compared to the original hardcover of the same book. Content is the same but the size lessens the artistic layout that combines photos, illustrations, and text. Captions and images roll into the binding. I am adding it to a classroom library for individuals to read so it will be fine but if you want the visual impact of a true picture book seek out another edition.

The book was smaller than I expected, but I believe it has more content than many larger books. Borden certainly did her research, and she added a section at the end where she compares research to being a detective. This is a great way to educate and inspire children intellectually.

The story is told with a vocabulary that children can understand while adults will still find it a good read. Borden included quite a number of drawings and photographs by the Rey's .

She explains in an epilogue that she didn't write about the Holocaust for several good reasons:
    1. It had nothing to do with the Rey's journey.
    2. Very few people who didn't live near the camps actually knew what was going on at that time, and many didn't believe it.
    3. She wanted children to have a small hint of the danger without writing a take which might give them nightmares.

She packs a great deal of information into this small book and I learned about several other books they produced.

    I enjoyed it greatly.

Not everyone knows that the drawings of Curious George probably saved the Reys' lives during WWII as they traveled on bicycle from Paris to Spain to escape the Nazi occupation of France. They left Paris on bicycles just days before the German tanks rolled down the streets of Paris. They were Jewish so the few times they were stopped on their way south to Spain, they would show their manuscript of their first Curious George book with the drawings of H.A. and were finally left alone to proceed on their bikes. A wonderful saga for all lovers of Curious George at a middle school reading level. How glad we are that they escaped the Nazis and were finally able to sail to Brazil and then to New York to begin to publish their wonderful Curious George series. By the way, the 1st 7 books in the CG series are the best and anything that H.A. and Margaret Rey did is worth owning! Since their death, many others have written and illustrated Curious George books and there are now hundreds of CG books, a cartoon series but they are trash compared to the "real" thing!

Kids are familiar with Curious George but the history of his creators is likely unfamiliar to them. This book is about the authors, and IS NOT part of the Curious George series. We bought a class set of this book to use with a sixth grade unit introducing students to the Holocaust. It is not gory or political; it does talk about the Reys flight from Nazis across France. With parent and teacher guidance, it could be used with kids as young as 9-10. There is a documentary film about the Reys that is a nice companion for after reading the book.
(Some readers may want to be aware of the colonization and racial undertones in Curious George stories. You can do some research to learn more about that. Frankly, I think CG books , because they are so familiar, are a way to open the door to for lessons/discussions with older kids (Gr. 10-college) about those issues.)

This book was on the school reading list. The description did not sound all that great to an 11 year old, but as a parent it sounded intriguing. After receiving the book and reading it, the 11 year old totally loves it! It has been read by everyone in the house and is simply a great true story! Lots of great pictures and a very fast read, but it is full of wonderful real world historical facts about the family and era that grab your attention and keep it throughout the whole book. Don't miss a chance to get this wonderful true adventure and enjoy it with your whole family.

This is an absolutely wonderful book! Many of us are familiar with Curious George, the monkey, but NOT familiar with the author and illustrator. This book gives the background of both - and in such a clear way. Plus the illustrations are excellent! The Reys had to continuously move to avoid being captured during WWII. This book tells and illustrates how ingenious they were and how, eventually, they were able to expand their gift of story telling and illustrating of George, the monkey who has survived very much in tact for generation. This book gives you such an appreciation for the Reys! Excellent purchase!
