Editorial Reviews
Review
"Dead Jack and the Pandemonium Device is an original romp that never lets up from start to finish." ― Ron Fortier, author of The Green Hornet & The Terminator comics
"In the more-fun-than-scary novel Dead Jack and the Pandemonium Device...the wisecracking Dead Jack lends humor to the story's fast pace while the spectacle of the wild setting begs to be seen on screen. That may not be far off, as Aquilone's noir dark fantasy has been optioned for film. Tony Eldridge, producer of the Denzel Washington Equalizer films, is attached to the project." ― Kirkus Reviews
"Dead Jack and the Pandemonium Device ... delivers thrilling action, excellent humor, a look into Jack's insane past and a gut punch ending that has me wanting a sequel yesterday."― PopHorror.com, Charlie Cargile
"Whimsical, witty, and full of adventure, Dead Jack and the Pandemonium Device is an exciting supernatural experience. But at its heart, readers will also discover a beautifully crafted, character-driven tale propelled by past trials and deep bonds." ― Geeks of Doom, Max Pfeffer
"The world of Pandemonium is something special. Think of it as Hell for the supernatural." ―Nathaniel Trusting, Amazon Review
"Fans of super fast-paced novels, rich worlds, and memorable characters will want to grab a copy right away. So worth the money. And the illustrations by Ed Watson are first rate." ―Pine Marten, Amazon Review
"A pulpy, twisted Lovecraftian noir full of interesting characters. I'm looking forward to more twisted fun from Dead Jack and Oswald." ―Amazon Reviewer

About the author
James Aquilone was raised on Saturday morning cartoons, comic books, sitcoms, and Cap'n Crunch. Amid the Cold War, he dreamed of being a jet fighter pilot but decided against the military life after realizing it would require him to wake up early. He had further illusions of being a stand-up comedian, until a traumatic experience on stage forced him to seek a college education. Brief stints as an alternative rock singer/guitarist and child model also proved unsuccessful. Today he battles a severe chess addiction while trying to write and edit in the speculative fiction game.
He is the founder of Monstrous Books, and has edited the bestselling anthlogies CLASSIC MONSTERS UNLEASHED, KOLCHAK: THE NIGHT STALKER - 50TH ANNIVERSARY and SHAKESPEARE UNLEASHED.
His first novel, DEAD JACK AND THE PANDEMONIUM DEVICE, has been optioned for film and TV. His short fiction has been published in such places as Nature's Futures, The Best of Galaxy's Edge 2013-2014, Unidentified Funny Objects 4, and Weird Tales Magazine.
He lives in Staten Island, New York, with his wonderful wife.

- Reviewed in the United States on February 23, 2020Where to start? Dead Jack is a Zombie PI with a need for "Fairy Dust." It keeps his hunger at bay and the rest of the population safe from being eaten ...except for maybe one smart-mouthed angry rude Leprechaun, but that was more a case Dead Jack had, had enough LOL or maybe Dead Jack just needed a shine bone to pick his teeth. (Wink)
Dead Jack is a Nori's kind of old school PI. Dead Jack and his sidekick Oswald whom I can only describe as a parasite shape-shifting type golem have a rocky kind of relationship but they make a good team.
Dead Jack and Oswald caught a case. To find the 52 (I think) missing cats that belong to the MightyGoblin Drag Queen. All of the characters are so well written, with larger than life traits, and personalities you can't help but like them even, the ones that are not very likable. He runs into some curious creatures along the way and an old chum that has gone sour. A few marbles short of a set if you ask me. It was a very well written enjoyable story and there was a surprise short story at the end of the book of the prequel/ or next book for Dead Jack. I enjoyed that very much as well. I have purchased book two already and hope to read more from this Author.

- Reviewed in the United States on May 26, 2017A neat premise is somewhat spoiled by the nearly - random approach the author takes to storytelling. It feels a lot more like someone wrote out a few evenings of role playing, rather than authoring this story.
It did feel like a complete world, and I enjoyed that things had clearly happened before this book in the character's existence, but that was not enough to make it excellent.
So, all in all, an OK read, but not compelling. (sorry, Mr. Aquilone.)
- Reviewed in the United States on August 11, 2017If you're a fan of the 1980's The Evil Dead, the cult classic movie and weird comedy by Sam Raimi and starring Bruce Campbell, you've been waiting for someone to kick it up a notch. James Aquilone does just that with his hilarious, crude and campy book - Dead Jack and the Pandemonium Device. Nothing is sacred, honorable, or excellent in Pandemonium - not even the unicorns. Zombie private investigator, Jack, is led by fear, drug addiction and folly into inexplicable adventure and inadmissible, dumb luck.
James, the author, is going to Hollywood with this undeadly, devious and delicious story. Read it now so you can gloat like a cool kid that, in fact, you knew it back when. Get this guy to autograph a dozen copies so you can hawk them for a pretty penny at a comic con in ten years. Or if there will be no comic cons, you can read and entertain survivors of the apocalypse for a can of beans.
Recent fun reading: The Zee Brothers by Grivante, Lights In The Night by Greg Alldredge and Derek Prince's They Shall Expel Demons.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 8, 2017I was going to give it a 3, but it just couldn't. After I started, I thought....what in God's green earth is going on here? But it's quirky, and different. Stuck with it. If you are sick of same old, same old...this book is for you.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 8, 2017Middle of the road from start to finish, just nothing to make it step out and grab me.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 8, 2017DEAD JACK AND THE PANDEMONIUM DEVICE is hilarious! Set in a world where every type of monster, fantastic being, and supernatural entity can exist, the hero of the tale is Dead Jack, a zombie of undetermined origin haunted by broken images of how he came to be an undead and addicted to either flesh or "dust", the drug of choice among the creepy critters who lurk in the world of Pandemonium.
Aquilone has created rather an old-fashioned chapter book packed with pulp memes that hold the reader's attention and desire to keep going, aching to learn what happens next at the end of each cliff-hanging episode. It's almost like an ancient radio serial with a clever zombie in the lead instead of a handsome cad with a gleaming smile. Add to this funny mix Jack's side-kick, a tiny fellow named Oswald whom Jack has taken to calling a "homonculus" because that's as close as he can come to describing the annoying, if absolutely loyal and indispensable partner.
Highly recommended. I look forward to the next installment of what I hope will be a long-running series. It has all of the ingredients for a successful run.

4.0 out of 5 stars Discworld meets Evil Dead!
Already after a few pages the tone was set and I was well into the book. Fast paced fun that keeps you reading and wanting more.
Think neo-noir fantasy adventure with a dark humours zombie twist and lots of angels dust. We get to know some funny intriguing characters throughout the novel and it will be very interesting to see how the author choose to expand on the fantasy universe that's cooked up in this literature meth-lab of his. I for one am a sucker for zombie-noir PI fantasy as of now!

3.0 out of 5 stars Fun book and great imagination
A fun story with great imagination and some hilarious ideas throughout. However, I felt the overall pace was a bit too fast. The plot was nice, but I think the story could have been better told if the rhythm was slower in some moments. However, I enjoyed the book and will definitely read the second one, 'Dead Jack and the Soul Catcher'.

3.0 out of 5 stars Decent but not outstanding
So much potential, it constantly felt like this novel was about to take off and soar to new heights. Only it never quite did. I'm being harsh, as it is well developed and well written and preferable to many I've read. But the frustration that it felt like it could be and should be more was overwhelming.
