The Final Formula (The Final Formula Series, Book 1) Kindle Edition

4.4 4.4 out of 5 stars 2,394 ratings

To a master alchemist like Addie, impossible is just another word for challenge. When a fiery explosion destroys the Alchemica, the premier alchemy institute in the United States, she’s left with nothing. No home, no colleagues, and no memory. Learning what happened seems impossible, but she still has one strength, and in her opinion, it’s the only one she needs. She hasn’t forgotten a thing about alchemy.

Addie brews a potion to restore her lost past, but remembers only the flames of the Alchemica’s destruction—and a man among the ashes. A man with the elemental power of fire, who just happens to be the leader of the magical community. He might know what happened, but getting him to tell her will require some…creativity. The magical aren’t fond of alchemists. Some say it borders on hatred, but Addie isn’t one to back down from a challenge, even if that challenge happens to be a man who can turn her to ash with a thought.

About the Author

Becca Andre lives in southern Ohio with her husband, two children, and an elderly Jack Russell Terrier. A love of science and math (yes, she’s weird like that), led to a career as a chemist where she blows things up far more infrequently than you’d expect. Other interests include: chocolate, hard rock, and slaying things on the Xbox. She also finds writing about herself in third person a bit strange.

~Sometime a favorite book is discover when you're least expecting. I'll admit I had this book on my Kindle since June, and have completely forgot about it. I started reading this book one night and didn't closed my eyes until I finished reading this book. Yes, it was that interesting.

When the magic returned two years ago, there are two type of magic co-existed in the world. New magic which are those who can control magic element with their mind, and Old magic which are inherited by bloodline passed down generations. There is also a third-type of modern "magic", those who works with chemistry and philosophy, the Alchemist.

I thought The Final Formula was unique and different compare to other Urban Fantasy genre. This book has an unique take on magical creatures that aren't mainstream, while having a fresh take on some supernatural beings that were common among Urban Fantasy genre.

I just loved the characters in this book, first we have Addie, an intelligent and strong female Alchemist who has no memory before the bombing of Alchemica. Addie's character was very easy to like, her confident in her Alchemist ability was admirable. Addie has a side-kick that turned out to be anything but ordinary. I loved James' character, I found his abilities interesting and unique. Then there is the Flame Lord, Rowan, the only Fire elemental that is living past his prime. Rowan was a mystery but very entertaining to read, especially when he and Addie work together.

This book was such a pleasure to read, Ms Andre wrote a book that hits all the right spot for me. The story and the writing just flaws together so well. Very well developed characters, and an intriguing fantasy world that has a solid world building, which I can't get enough of. You want mystery there was mystery, you want action there were plenty of actions, you want romance there were some romances, but it never takeaway the focus of the story.

I do think the ending was a little predicable, I thought Addie was too engrossed in her own world and can be overzealous at time, especially when she finds familiar faces that would trigger her memories, in result she often overlook many obvious clues.

Some readers have issue with the age differences, but honestly age seem irrelevant when you are reading supernatural/fantasy books.

This was a well written, well pace book that has a plot full of twists and turns. The Final Formula was an unique, gripping Urban Fantasy book that I couldn't put it down once I start reading. If you are a fan of Urban Fantasy and am looking for something a bit different to read, you don't want to missed out on this book!

Happy Reading!

Updated review, some years after my original review: Skipping past the sex scene, I finally finished this book, and went on to read the other novels in this series. I still really enjoy the world-building, the mystery, and the characterization. The story itself is a really complex and fun ride. The following books in the series are even better, imo. Glad I went back and tried again! I went on and got her Iron Souls series and loved that also.

Original review:
I loved this book and fully intended to buy every book in the series. Well-written, imaginative story, and a lot of fun. Even the mystery was well done, which is rare in fantasy books. So I was in heaven: good writing, strong characters... That is until I was blind-sided by a pretty graphic sex scene that I was so not expecting. Sorry to say, I'll not be purchasing the other books in the series, and I'll miss how it all plays out. And I'm sad about that, but I just don't care for sex scenes and didn't realize this book had them. Reasonable use of cursing I expect and can handle, tactful non-graphic romantic or tasteful or implied sex scenese are okay, but this scene was strangely vulgar. I wish there were an edited version to purchase, as I'd snap it up in a heartbeat. I'll miss this story and the characters for sure.

Marking down one star to four stars. While the sex scene was vulgarly done, the writing and the characterization is excellent.

I did not expect this book to be as good as it is. Usually, well in my case usually, alchemy is set in Victorian times or some other old world time and they tend to spout a bunch of science, which usually goes right over my head because it was never my best subject, so I lose focus and don’t finish.

Not the case with this book. There were so many twists and turns that I was on the edge of my seat, eager to turn the pages to anxious to find out what was going on. I couldn’t even begin to suspect the ending, this reader was floored and I have to go on to the next book.

The writing was simply amazing and I instantly connected with the characters, especially when the protagonist saw the lab equipment because that’s how I feel about books.

It was set in modern times so, even though my mind kept wanting to put all this alchemy talk into a distant past, the use of cell phones and current cars kept bringing me back. That could have been tricky for a book about alchemy but, the author did it just right.

A little bit of a romance but, it’s not the main focus, which this reviewer thought was a great idea since there was so much that the author gave the readers about that world and all the information she gave us. I raved to a couple of my friends to try out this book, I was just enchanted by it.

Another thing that I loved about this book, I was constantly smiling or laughing at something that they were saying, the sarcasm and witty comebacks just keep coming. Usually, as the story goes on and the characters grow, everything gets serious and while this did happen, the author didn’t lose the sarcasm.

It still manages to be light-hearted and there is no chance of it getting boring.

I would recommend this to teenagers and up, considering they don’t mind a little cussing or a couple of innuendos. Pick this book up and you won’t want to put it down.

There isn't a single book by her that I dislike. She is a talented author and this alchemist series is fantastic! I strongly recommend it to paranormal and supernatural fantasy lovers.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wenn man sich in eine Geschichte verliebt...

Addie steht für the Addled Alchemist.

Empfehlenswert.

5.0 out of 5 stars So much action, sharp dialogue and suspense, it left me breathless!

It's been a long time since a series of books has captured my imagination quite like The Final Formula. I downloaded the first book early one evening and read through the night. I finished it at dawn, and promptly downloaded the next two in the series. I raced through them almost as quickly.

Blown away by the story and the amazing characters, I took a deep, calming breath – and started from the beginning, reading slowly and carefully. That is definitely required because the storyline is very, very complex and very, very imaginative.

The end result . . . I actually emailed Becca Andre to ask when the next in the series is coming out. It's that good.

Okay, sure. there are the a few problems. Like I said, the story is complex with a lot of characters, which has left me with question marks about a couple of things. But wow, as criticisms go, that's minor.

I mean, chuck in an alchemist, a hellhound, four magical elements, some zombies, and some necros, and, hell, what could possibly go wrong?

So much, it makes your head spin! There are more twists than a spiral staircase and so many surprises.

I absolutely loved Addie! She's such an exciting addition to my literary friends. If ever there is a woman who owns the page, it's her. She has a unique way of looking at life that manages to get up the noses of everyone she meets, leading to some amazing conflicts, some great potions, and tons of fast-paced action set in, often, very creepy surrounds. Magical stuff!

And as for the Lord of Fire whom she tussles with, he has totally captured my heart. Personally, I would love to read the entire book again from his perspective. How about it Becca?

So, if you are looking for an amazing fantasy to keep you awake at night, then this is it.

Competent who-dunnit, just feel that it could have reached a five star rating. Interesting, yet flawed protagonist, creepy villains, unusual and mysterious quest, and a vague but deep love interest. All the good stuff, but something missing. Perhaps, because it felt like something for young adults (although there is some, well-handled, adult material), not quite serious enough. Still, I liked it.
