From the authors of Leadership and Self-Deception (over 2 million copies sold) comes a new edition of this bestseller that has been thoroughly revised to more effectively address the diversity, equity, and inclusion challenges that plague our communities and hinder our organizations.

What if conflicts at home, at work, and in the world stem from the same root cause? What if we systematically misunderstand that cause? And what if, as a result, we unwittingly perpetuate the very problems we think we are trying to solve?

The Anatomy of Peace uses a fictional story of an Arab and a Jew—both of whom lost their fathers at the hands of the other's cousins—to powerfully show readers the way to transform conflict. We learn how they come together, how they help parents and children come together, and how we too can find our way out of the personal, professional, and social conflicts that weigh us down.

The fourth edition includes revisions and new materials and resources that increase its relevance and usefulness at a time of deeply entrenched divisions throughout society. Additionally, it includes new detailed discussions of the pattern of dehumanization that lies at the heart of today's most pressing struggles with prejudice and discrimination—challenges that cannot be solved until the origins of bias and discrimination are properly understood and addressed. The new edition is a unique and vital resource for combatting racism and prejudice in their many manifestations.

Most people and organizations tackle common problems—disengagement, conflict, poor communication, and so on—by trying to change behavior. The problem is that a behavioral focus alone will not solve these problems. Why? Because they are driven by mindset. Through training, coaching, consulting, and a suite of implementation tools, Arbinger helps individuals, teams, and organizations achieve breakthrough results by shifting from the default self-focus of an inward mindset to the impact-focus of an outward mindset. Programs and methodology are based on four decades of research in the psychology of human behavior and experience working with organizations worldwide in the corporate, healthcare, education, government, public safety, and nonprofit sectors.

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

The premise of this follow-up to Leadership and Self-Deception is simple: people whose hearts are at peace do not wage war, whether they're heads of state or members of a family. In this semi-fictional narrative ("inspired by actual events") illustrating the principles of achieving peace, the setting is a two-day parent workshop at an Arizona-based wilderness camp for out-of-control teenagers, but the storyline is a mere setting for an instruction manual. Workshop facilitators Yusuf al-Falah, a Palestinian Arab whose father was killed by Israelis in 1948, and Avi Rozen, an Israeli Jew whose father died in the Yom Kippur War, use examples from their domestic lives and the history of their region to illustrate situations in which the normal and necessary routines of daily life can become fodder for conflict. Readers observe this through the eyes of one participant, a father whose business is in nearly as much trouble as his teenage son. The usefulness of the information conveyed here on how conflicts take root, spread and can be resolved more than compensates for the pedestrian writing.

HISTORY

In the 1970s, a team of scholars led by philosopher C. Terry Warner embarked on an exploration into a core problem at the heart of the human sciences—the “problem of self-deception.” The research explored how we end up creating and sustaining problems we don’t know we are causing, and how and why people resist helpful solutions.

A DISCOVERY

Initially, all attempts to understand the phenomenon of self-deception failed, just as all attempts had for over 100 years. After years of work, however, the research team discovered a solution no one expected. They discovered the clear and surprising way that people begin to evade responsibility without thinking that they are doing so, and therefore end up blaming others or circumstances they, themselves, are helping to create. More importantly, they discovered how this could be corrected.

EARLY APPLICATION

Following this scholarly discovery, Arbinger’s founding members began teaching the principles in academic circles and within the university environment. This soon led to demand from individuals and families and then to requests for organizational applications. As more and more people and organizations experienced the profound changes that were enabled by Arbinger’s work, Arbinger evolved into a full-service consultancy that helps individuals and organizations solve the problems they have never been able to solve.

ARBINGER TODAY

Arbinger was founded in 1979. Since then, Arbinger has worked with thousands of individuals and organizations and helped them to transform their effectiveness and performance.

Early on, Arbinger’s growth was fueled solely by clients who spread the word about Arbinger’s impact. Arbinger’s public profile was then dramatically increased by the global success of its first book, Leadership & Self Deception, which was published in 2000. The book quickly became a word-of-mouth bestseller. It is now available in 27 languages and has sold over a million copies.

Arbinger’s second international bestseller, The Anatomy of Peace, was published in 2006. Available in 14 languages and having sold nearly 500,000 copies to date, The Anatomy of Peace demonstrates the power of Arbinger’s work in resolving conflict.

Arbinger is now recognized as a world-leader in improving organizational culture and conflict resolution. Arbinger’s clients range from individuals who are seeking help in their lives to many of the largest companies and governmental institutions in the world.

To get the full effect, the three books must be read, in no particular order. I began with Leadership and Self Deception, which intrigued me so much I immediately bought Anatomy of Peace and Outward Mindset. These books expose our inner motives, which is painful, but as the book is titled, it leads the reader to real peace. I've suggested this book to friends of mine: Sherrie was struggling to cope with her daughter's eating disorder which was spiraling out of control. She read it in 2 days and she's able to view the entire situation with a new vision and serenity.
I began reading Leadership and Self Deception with a group of business partners looking to maximize ourselves to better serve others. We do this on a monthly basis and all the books we choose are profoundly life changing. Of all the books we've read in the past few years, this is number 2 (Insidious is number 1) and I refer back to the lessons regularly.

Over the past 15 years, I have read and revisited the principle of self-deception taught in Anatomy of Peace numerous times. I may be overstating its importance, but this may be the most valuable idea I learned in life so far. It comes up every day, in every relationship, and it is deceptively powerful and subtle. But becoming aware of my self-deception and how to address it has opened the door to tremendous freedom and personal growth. The lesson of self-deception gave new perspective to the oft repeated advice, "Love thy neighbor as thyself" and "Do unto others as you'd have done to you."

This has been an extremely valuable book in my family. It has helped me invite tremendously valuable improvements in my marriage, my relationships with my children, my coworkers, and everyone else I cross paths with as I go about life. I have lost my interest in making people change. I want to meet them where they're at in life. I want to understand their perspective. I want to help them, where I can, to make their own life better. I can't do it for them and I don't want to. Life is a wonderful experience. I would rather help people in their own efforts to realize their full potential, as opposed to fussing and fretting because other people aren't "doing it right". Why am I the right one and they are wrong? I have not only learned that we are smarter than I, but I welcome other's perspective and insights, which help me to see more clearly than I can on my own.

This is one of the most important books I have ever read. It's topics and message is so unique to the other books that would be in the same category.

Self deception is an important lesson for every human being to learn of they want to vastly improve themselves as an individual.

Think you are a victim in life? That bad things always happen to you??? Well you might find some answers and more importantly some freedom from the parts of life that can take such a heavy toll.

When you learn to look within to them look without you find that most the suffering and conflict in your life is due to having a heart at war. The inner conflict that tells you people should behave how you want them to. That another person exists to serve your needs first and then maybe there own.

When you have a conflict with another person they are a burden. They are an obstacle that needs to be removed.

That type of objectification leads to pain and suffering on a personal level. It is possible to see a person as a person and still have difficult circumstances in life.

I hope you read this book. From one person to another this would be one of the most important books you read. If you are struggling and work or home or like me both sometimes I think this book could hold some resolutions for you.

Very well written and hard hitting. This type of books deepen the understanding of ourselves and people in general. It talks about the core of conflict. It talks about why do the conflicts happen in first place. So many books talk about thinking good about people who have hurt you. This books shows why and how. It has changed me, on level how I can have my heart at peace even during worst conflicts. If you feel you are at conflict very often, than give this book a try.

I had to read any book about conflict for class... I had just over a week to get the whole thing read and reviewed on paper and I did not think I could do it.... the course has been so dry... but when I started this book (that I found randomly and purchased with fingers crossed) I couldn't put it down !! It's such a beautifully written book and easy to read/follow. This just made my assignment incredibly worth it. I'm lucky to have come across this content. Thank you!!! #grateful <3
