Wild at Home: How to style and care for beautiful plants Kindle Edition

4.8 4.8 out of 5 stars 3,191 ratings

"Hilton Carter's love for plants is infectious... His lush and exuberant displays are inspiring reminders that plants can be so much more than neat little containers on a window sill."Grace Bonney, Founder and Editor-in-Chief, Design*Sponge
Take a tour through Hilton's own apartment and other lush spaces, filled with a huge array of thriving plants, and learn all you need to know to create your own urban jungle. As the owner of over 200 plants, Hilton feels strongly about the role of plants in one's home – not just for the beauty they add, but for health benefits as well: 'having plants in your home not only adds life, but changes the airflow throughout. It's also a key design element when styling your place. For me, it wasn't about just having greenery, but having the right variety of greenery. I like to see the different textures of foliage all grouped together. You take a fiddle leaf fig and sandwich it between a birds of paradise and a monstera and…. yes!' You will be armed with the know-how you need to care for your plants, where to place them, how to propagate, how to find the right pot, and much more, and most importantly, how to arrange them so that they look their best. Combine sizes and leaf shapes to stunning effect, grow your own succulents from leaf cuttings, create your own air plant display, and more.

Born in Baltimore, Maryland, Hilton Carter began his passion for the arts at an early age. This will and desire would take him from enrolling in summer art classes at local community colleges at the age of nine, to a high school that specialized in art and technology. After graduating high school, he would receive his BFA from The Maryland Institute College of Art and continue his studies to earn a MFA from Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, CA.

His freelance work as a filmmaker and editor allowed him to travel around the US and would eventually bring him to New Orleans in 2014. For him, it all started with one plant, a fiddle-leaf fig named Frank, to be exact. As he explains in his best-selling book Wild at Home: How to style and care for beautiful plants, his interest in plants started out as purely practical: he was averse to putting up curtains in his New Orleans apartment, and decided to try a more natural approach to creating privacy, using plants. His experience as a novice indoor gardener was gratifying as Frank flourished in the bright and humid conditions. But when Hilton had to move to a home with less ideal growing conditions, Frank’s leaves turned yellow and started to fall off. Five years later, Frank is now thriving in the Baltimore apartment he shares with Hilton Carter and his wife Fiona, their cats Isabella and Zoe, pup Charlie and 200 other plants.

“Have you ever walked into a plant nursery or greenhouse and instantly felt a change in the air? The feeling of calm that washes over you as you tilt your head back, close your eyes, and take a deep breath. This is the feeling you’re looking to replicate when you bring plants into your home.” – Hilton Carter, in Wild at Home

He does a weekly series with Apartment Therapy called Plant Doctor and has been featured in the The New York Times, Wall Street Journal, Washington Post, HGTV and BuzzFeed, to name a few. His latest book, Wild Interiors: Beautiful plants in beautiful spaces, releases April 2020.

Hilton Carter is a plant/interior stylist, director, author, and fine artist. He has a loyal following on Instagram(@hiltoncarter), where he shares his knowledge of plant care and styling with the green loving community.

A beautiful and inspirational book
Hilton Carter’s “Wild at Home” is so inspiring to me! As someone who’s a big thrifter and diyer i try to go for the cheapest options for my plant storage needs, by building my own shelves and macrame hangers. This book offers fun tips on how to arrange your home around plants. The plant hammock tutorial is one I will definitely be trying and though I already propagate I’m excited to have knowledge on how to do it properly with other plants such as the fiddle leaf fig and monstera. After reading this book I am already seeing my small apartment a lot differently and can’t wait to see the slow transformation of my space to plant heaven.

I am in love with the plant styling of Hilton Carter's Baltimore home. What sets his home and plants apart from all the rest is he has arranged the plants in much the same way as an artist composes a painting or as an interior designer puts her vision into a room. Hilton is first an artist, a designer and creates beautifully curated spaces filled with plants in a non- cluttered way. His home is filled with life and warmth.

I pre-ordered Hilton Carter's, Wild at Home book the first day it became available of Amazon. For several years I've been following Hilton's Instagram feed, it's my very favorite feed on Instagram. I don't remember anymore how I first came across his work with plants, perhaps he mentioned Terrain or Terrain mention him. What I do know is Terrain in Glen Mills is one of my favorite places, it's a garden store and cafe, filled with plants that are so well curated and styled and a delight to all your senses. Soft music plays, candles are burning, there's usually a fire pit burning outside, it's a fabulous example of 'Scandinavian hygge.' This same magical atmosphere is what Hilton has created and shared in his new book. And you can create it too in your home.

I received my copy of Wild at Home, and started reading it that day and the next day. It's filled with so many helpful tips on plant care and even a section on making a plant hammock or a lamp terrarium! It's an easy read and a great reference book for plant care. The book is full in inspirational photographs from Hilton's home and also from some of his friends homes he has styled with plants.

I have the feeling that this might just be the first of many books the Hilton will create. I highly recommend this book (it's a 10!) to anyone who wants to care for their green friends in the best possible way. I look forward to many other books from Hilton and maybe even a coffee table book!

I follow Hilton Carter on Instagram and was beyond excited to finally receive a copy of his book. The book is everything I imagined it would be. The photographs are incredible and you truly feel as if you are a guest in Hilton's home. The book is very easy to follow and offers fantastic tips that any plant lover can appreciate! As difficult as it is to admit, I have been purchasing plants for all the wrong reasons- selfish reasons (because they were unique or came in a really rad pot). The book has taught me how to go about finding plants that will truly thrive in the space I am looking to fill with their leaves & love. It was also really awesome to see homes of friends, that Hilton has helped to style. He an his wife are very lucky to have, what every plant-lover dreams about- large windows with lots of light! (Yes, I am very jealous!) It was great so see plants in other homes that have less light and unique spaces. Well done Hilton!! I just purchased 2 more copies of Wild at Home to give as gifts for Mother's Day!

I’ve been following Hilton Carter on Instagram for a while now. It seems everywhere you look Houseplant books are popping up which can make it hard to distinguish one from another. (As a self proclaimed plant book hoarder they can be a lot of the same.) What I really loved and felt Hilton hit head on was the propagation information and lighting. There is a section of his book explaining light exposure and window direction. BRILLIANT. We all know southern windows are bright but it’s nice to have a quick reference for those pesky northern or northwestern windows. One thing Hilton is known for aside from his FLFs is his propitiation station. He easily explains the best way to propigate, and easy how-to steps. The rooting time chart is also a major bonus I haven’t seen included in other books. If you’re new to plants, this is a great book to learn the basics and dip your fingers into other areas of houseplant care. Beautiful photographs, helpful information, overall awesome book.
