Forrest Gump (Vintage Contemporaries) Kindle Edition

4.4 4.4 out of 5 stars 3,858 ratings

The modern classic that inspired the beloved movie starring Tom Hanks.

Six foot six, 242 pounds, and possessed of a scant IQ of 70, Forrest Gump is the lovable, surprisingly savvy hero of this classic comic tale. His early life may seem inauspicious, but when the University of Alabama’s football team drafts Forrest and makes him a star, it sets him on an unbelievable path that will transform him from Vietnam hero to world-class Ping-Pong player, from wrestler to entrepreneur. With a voice all his own, Forrest is telling all in a madcap romp through three decades of American history.

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

There is a joyously madcap feeling to the first half of this unusual novel, but then the absurdity gathers its own speed and begins to run dangerously amok. Groom's picaresque tale is told by an idiot, the Gump of the title, and follows his outrageous life from early stardom for Bear Bryant's Crimson Tide, through a tour in Vietnam and across the broad canvas of America during the '70s and '80s. Like most literary idiots, Forrest Gump is a lot smarter than the people he encounters. He is also no ordinary idiot. Instead, he is a mathematical idiot savant, capable of outperforming NASA's on-board computers, which is why Gump ends up on a space mission with an ape and the first woman astronauta mission that ends in the forests of New Guinea where Gump meets a Yale-tutored cannibal. All this takes place after Gump has met Lyndon Johnson and saved Chairman Mao from drowning, which is to say that this is a very broad satire. While there is much on-target humor here, Groom, author of Better Times Than These, has written better books than this.

From Library Journal

Forrest Gump provides social commentary in a light, humorous style. Gump's adventures range from shrimp farming and chess championships to space flight and capture by cannibals. Nixon, the military, Vietnam, college football, and other topics receive blunt and caustic comment from Gump. Throughout his experiences, Gump remains a likable fellow who views the world and notes his observations simply, straightforwardly, and truthfully. Author and narrator Groom uses inflections and intonations that capture Gump's character and personality. The recent feature film starring Academy AwardR winner Tom Hanks should help stir demand. This delightful and easy-to-listen-to audiobook is an appropriate addition to most collections.

I read this book years ago (before the movie) and enjoyed the comedy aspect of the book. In fact I remember being disappointed in the movie thinking they got it ALL WRONG! (though, like the rest of the world-I’ve grown to love the movie, as well;)

I decided to read it again (20-ish years later) and I was not disappointed!

Do not expect the Tom Hanks version of Forrest!!!
It is unfortunate that this book is overshadowed by the movie. The movie was obviously ‘inspired’ by the book-each is it’s own work of art. They really cannot and should not be compared.

The book (written in first person through Forrest’s voice) is a compilation of outrageous (and mostly ridiculous) situations Forrest finds himself in. It is a comedy with heart as he meets memorable characters along the way.

It’s an easy and fun read once you get past the phonetically written text/grammar-which is honestly part of the charm that brings Forrest to life.

Quite possibly the funniest book I’ve ever read!

Some folks may feel this book is interesting... Me, I struggled with it. I felt the same way about the movie. It is my personal preference. I can see why somebody would enjoy reading this. It could be that I just can't handle anyone calling someone an idiot, not even in one's self. The redeemable thing about this book for me is that it opens one's eyes to the 1960's time period of US issues as well as to some simple truths of life. Several times I grew tired of the stories Forrest told. I grew up with people much like the people in Forrest's life.

I know this book could be funny by for some people. It just reminded me of the insensitivity people can have towards other people. I did enjoy the way Forest drew his own conclusions and revealed his intellectual talents even though the folks in Forrest's life and society in general tried to label him. It was great his character did not allow or accept other people's opinions to keep him from pursuing friendships and using his empathy when faced with hard times, which could be inspiring. Very well written.

I found endearing moments in this book, a sweetness about life, humorous instances reminding me of a "Jerry Clower-type" storytelling. The characters in this book offered glimpses of humanity we can all relate to. They believable.

Don't expect what you saw in the movie. This is so much better! Entertaining, sad sometimes. It is very colorful and fun to visualize the various events. A very enjoyable read!

Many readers will find there are numbers of episodes differ from the famous movie. But readers will enjoy this original book, too. Forrest always has opportunities to do something new and makes results from it, either good or bad. I liked the movie better, but I also enjoyed the book, too.

I absolutely loved the beginning of this. It lost me throughout the middle though. It came back around in the end and I liked the ending. Enjoyed it overall.

I enjoyed the film (which I saw long before reading the book) but as usual, the book is so much better! Tom Hanks did an okay job portraying Forrest, but when you read the book, the Forrest character's size comes into play many times, and Hank's slight stature doesn't quite cut it. I don't picture Tom Hanks' version of Forrest whilst reading the book, except for maybe his voice and speech pattern. I love the innocent, naive way Forrest deals with the trials and tribulations of life and the book turns what could be unbearably sad situations into something matter-of-fact and even light hearted - and that's all I've got to say about that!

This is a story of Forrest Gump, an Idiot savant, in his own(grammatically incorrect) words. I have watched the movie also, but I found the book more humorous.
