There’s Often a Fine Line Between a Criminal and a Saint

Constable Jackson Forge intends to make the world safer, or at least the streets of Victorian London. But that’s Kit Turner’s domain, a swindler who runs a crew that acquires money the old-fashioned way—conning the rich to give to the poor. When a local cab driver goes missing, Jackson is tasked with finding the man, and the only way to do that is by enlisting Kit’s help. If Jackson doesn’t find the cabby, he’ll be fired. If Kit doesn’t help Jackson, he’ll arrest her for thievery. Yet neither of them realize those are the least of their problems.

Review

"Griep is such a talent and she shines in The Thief of Blackfriars Lane. Well-told, romantic and clever, this is one you don't want to miss. It will delight you!"
-Rachel Hauck, New York Time Bestselling author

"The Thief of Blackfriars Lane will take you on a romp through Victorian London, from the black-as-night sewer tunnels to glittering parties at the Lord Mayor's mansion. With Kit and Jackson as your guides, you'll be breathless to keep up with their fast-paced wit and clever intrigues. This whip-smart duo sparkles on the page as they right wrongs, fight for the light, and pursue God-given purpose in every life. A vibrant and thoroughly enjoyable ride!"
-Jocelyn Green, Christy Award winning author of
Shadows of the White City

"Come with me to Blackfriars Lane, run the underground rails and sewers, and if you're the police, just try to keep up! Gosh, this book was a fun, feisty, and female-empowering story. I thoroughly enjoyed the spots of humor, the mystery, and the action. A little bit of Enola Holmes and a lotta fun! You won't want to miss it!"
-Jaime Jo Wright, author of Christy Award-Winning
The House on Foster Hill, and Christy Award-Nominated Echoes Among the Stones

"A Charles Dickens-like Victorian tale full of intrigue, adventure, and romance. Delightful!"
-Morgan L. Busse, author of the award-winning Ravenwood Saga

"If there is an it quality to writing Victorian fiction, Michelle Griep has it! Action? Check! Setting? Check! Snappy dialogue? Check, check! Meticulous research meets impeccable story crafting in this fast-paced, many-layered novel. I give it an A-plus!"
-Erica Vetsch, author of the Serendipity & Secrets Regency series

"An adventure and a half! I've never before rooted for a thief, but Michelle Griep has magical storytelling power that will convince you to join her in whatever escapade she's thought up. Never one to settle for hitting the typical story beats, Griep takes readers on a twisting, turning ride that will surprise even the most avid reader. The unexpected plot and unlikely but dynamic leads pop with the color and life of a Dickens novel, but with a style that is uniquely--and delightfully--Griep's own."
-Joanna Davidson Politano, author of
The Love Note and other Victorian-era mysteries

"Take one earnest and well-meaning but slightly bumbling hero matching wits with a smart, nefarious female villain--or is she our heroine in disguise?--and you have the perfect recipe for a delicious romp across (and underneath) Victorian London. I loved Jackson and Kit! A slightly different sort of story for Griep, but her voice is a natural for the setting and era. Too fun to miss!"
-Shannon McNear, 2014 RITA(R) finalist and author of
The Rebel Bride and The Blue Cloak

"What an absolutely delightful mystery! A fast-paced adventure through the underbelly of Victorian London led by a smart heroine you can't help but fall in love with. Exceptional research. Characters that sizzle off the page. Highly recommended!"
-Abigail Wilson, author of
Masquerade at Middlecrest Abbey

An impressively original, exceptionally entertaining, deftly scripted, and simply riveting read from first page to last, in the pages of her novel, "The Thief of Blackfriars Lane", author Michelle Griep deftly blends elements of Mystery, Suspense, Romance, and Historical Fiction. Certain to be an immediate and enduringly popular addition to community library collections, it should be noted for personal reading lists that "The Thief of Blackfriars Lane" is also readily available in a digital book format (Kindle, $15.19) and as a complete and unabridged audio book (Oasis Audio, 9781640914780, $14.99, CD).
--James A. Cox "Midwest Book Review" (12/21/2020 12:00:00 AM)

"Griep delivers a charming story about a talented thief, a bumbling constable, and their reluctant partnership . . . Jackson's eagerness and Kit's boldness prove to be a perfect match, allowing Griep to explore both the tribulations of Victorian poverty and the powers of salvation. Fans of Kristy Cambron should take a look."-- "Publishers Weekly" (11/2/2020 12:00:00 AM)

I hear voices. Loud. Incessant. And very real. Which basically gives me two options: choke back massive amounts of Prozac or write fiction. I've been writing since I discovered blank wall space and Crayolas. I seek to glorify God in all that I write--except for that graffiti phase I went through as teenager.

A captivating ¨Dickens style" story that I couldn't put down!!

A captivating ¨Dickens style" story that I couldn't put down!!
This is another of Michelle Griep’s masterpieces! It blows my mind how she can write a story that could be plainly written by the one and only Charles Dickens, such is the written style, the way of talking, the ambience of London’s dark streets and characters, etc., but with a bit of lightheartedness, funny banter, and such a sweet and endearing romance! Her talent is truly admirable! I was completely gripped by the plot, the mystery and intrigue, the witty banter, the charming characters, even the raw pain that makes them stronger, yet always compassionate and kind, behind the façade of independence and control.Constable Jackson Forbe has made a mistake and need to prove his work at his job, or else he will be fired. So he must excel in his new assignment of finding a cabby driver that has gone missing. That same cabby driver is the closest thing Kit Turner has had for a father, who along with his wife, took her in when she was a street urchin. So she has to find him even if it’s at the cost of her life. And Kit has important connections, since she is a strongminded swindler that runs a crew who take money -in a supposedly legal way- from the rich to aid the the poorest of London’s slums. It’s what gives her purpose, since God hasn’t deigned to come down to the aid of these lost and hopeless people. So here is where Jackson needs Kit and her connections to fulfill his mission, and Kit needs Jackson because he has a special token that belongs to her and won’t give back if she doesn’t help him. As you can imagine these two different personalities clash and forge a friendship at the same time. As they follow clues to find old Joe, that take them to unexpected revelations, they both get to know one another and the walls they had erected slowly melt until they get to know what they hide in each other hearts, and to their surprise, they find a kindred spirit, and maybe so much more? But their lives couldn’t be more opposite, even if they both seek to make a better world. Will they let their hearts speak for themselves? Do they have a chance? And will they find the missing man and solve other connected crimes? As I said, I found this book totally captivating! It has everything I love in a book: a great plot mixed with mystery and intrigue, fast paced action, a sweet and difficult romance, and some lighthearted banter. All this, in a very realistic style of the era, totally transported me to the Victorian streets of the Blackfriars area. I felt I was in a kind of Oliver Twist movie, but with a different twist and characters, and a wonderful romance! The characters are now favorite of mine. So endearing! I loved they both were strong and determined, yet kind and compassionate to the core. And with humor!Definitely a story I couldn’t put down and highly recommend! Can’t wait for Michelle’s next book!I received an Advanced Copy of the book from the Publisher, but wasn’t required to post a positive review. This is my honest and unbiased opinion.

As I was reading the book I felt like I was actually back there, seeing things for myself! The descriptions were so detailed. It was so interesting watching Jackson do anything to solve a crime. We get to see what techniques were available at the time. We were taken on trip throughout London including underground tunnels. We also see how both Jackson and Kit try to get through life doing the right thing even though fudging the law would be so much easier. I never saw the end coming! It's a great read!

What an absolute gem of a novel! I loved this story! I loved the characters (and not just Jackson and Kit, though they were fantastic, but all of the characters were so fleshed out and individual that they felt real and alive to me!) I loved the setting and I loved the plot! I was invested from the first chapter and read the entire thing in 24 hours. (Yep, I chose this over sleep. Worth it.) I will admit that I guessed the villain rather early on but there was enough clues pointing to other people that I did second guess myself. And then the twist at the end with the villain? Out loud I gasped and said, "Oh shoot, now what?" I loved this book so much I immediately recommended it to everyone in my family that read and my book club! And the care and attention to period authenticity not just in clothing and setting but also in their vocabulary? This history major was very happy. Do yourself a favor and grab this one! You will not be disappointed. I'm off to read the second book now! Ta!

Spunky and spirited Kit Turner uses her brains and beauty to run scams in Victorian London to provide for the poor and destitute of Blackfriars Lane. However, when an old friend goes missing, she turns to the handsome new constable Jackson Forge for assistance in tracking him down. Jackson Forge is new to law enforcement and has one chance to impress his captain and remain on the police force --find this missing cab driver and solve the case. Kit and Jackson, con and policeman, agree to a truce and work together. As danger escalates and the case turns into much more than a single missing man, their attraction grows, and the partnership becomes something much more.
Michelle Griep delivers a spunky and romantic Victorian mystery that captivates and entertains readers, taking them from the back alleys and sewers of London to the Lord Mayor’s ballroom. With a thoroughly exciting and engaging plot, we follow our hero and heroine across London to solve a mystery that unfolds into bigger conspiracy. I truly felt like I escaped to Victorian London because each scene was set perfectly with excellent description and dialogue. Although I did predict the villain of the story about halfway through, I was still thoroughly captivated until the very end with how the entire mystery was solved and how the final confrontation played out. There were so many twists and turns in the storyline that I was completely entertained until the last page. My favorite part of this story was the enemies to lovers couple dynamic, with wonderfully written chemistry and romance between Kit and Jackson. A strong female protagonist who can still be rescued by a dashing hero is always my favorite! I highly recommend The Thief of Blackfriars Lane to anyone looking for an entertaining read that allows you to escape to Victorian London and perhaps even solve a mystery or two!

I started this book while visiting London. It started off well, but it sort of fizzled for me at about 75%. There were quite a few characters mentioned and it was hard to predict how important they were to the overall plot. I loved the scenes with Kit and Forge on the run, especially being chased in the underground tunnels. I definitely felt the couple had chemistry which was a big plus. I would probably have enjoyed the book more if it wasn’t quite so lengthy.

For me, this book dragged in a couple of areas (like when Jackson was searching
for the missing man and then found Kit & also while Kit and Jackson were trying
to find the person behind the disappearance), but the pacing got better. Loved the
interaction between them since they consider themselves on the different sides of
the law. Also loved the facts about London and its history. Must read.
