- Reviewed in the United States on July 19, 2010Oh, I read everything while in bed, to knit up the raveled sleeve of care. I ask only for a large font if available, a paperback edition (hardbacks are clumsy bed partners), and a good story well told. Wellman always has a good story, and tells it well. Typically the location is rural South Carolina, with the hillfolk and their beliefs and ballads. The reader is lulled in the beginning with a peaceful setting, but an unexplainable happening intrudes, followed by others, and soon the plot is deep in demonology.
A superb story teller, Wellman has a large vocabulary coupled with an ability to use it.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 7, 2013Manly Well Wademan has a gift for capturing the flavor of the mountain folk. I guess that's because he spent a lot of his later years living in the area about which he writes. I have enjoyed every one of these tales and only regret that there are no more.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 8, 2014Re-reading. I've always loved this character: Simple, honest, hardworking, intelligent man roaming the hills of Appalachia, interacting with it's people and their music; and with just a touch of mystery & magic.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 3, 2018I love Manly Wade Wellman and especially his Silver John stories. Don't know why these books haven't been reprinted. He weaves an intriguing story with well-developed characters in a small amount of pages
- Reviewed in the United States on April 7, 2014I love these Silver John stories, although I think that Wellman does better with John in the short story format than a novel. Still, I was thrilled to find one of these out of print books.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 2, 2017This is listed as CD format it is not! These are CDRs and very cheaply produced and not as stable as real CDs. I had to request a replacement order because of scratches and even glue spots on the playing surface of all the discs. There is an incredible amount of paper dust particles present in the internal packing. I have never received a Disc 5 that was not scratched up - the disc 5 looks like it was dropped on a warehouse floor and stepped on before putting it into the sleeve. This was true for both copies I have seen. It was necessary for me to have the disc resurfaced and surface repaired (by a Professional) before it would even play through. This is one of Manly Wade Wellman's best novel well read, but treated like crap by the physical media presentation of Blackstone audio. Don't buy if misrepresentation and low quality are an issue.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 24, 2013the item arrived promptly, and it was as described on line..no surprises ( unless perhaps it was a little better copy than I imagined it to be) It was well packaged which with older books means everything.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 1, 2012I liked this book fairly well, though not as much as Wellman's short stories about "John" written during the 1950's. John seemed to work better in a shorter format.
I had nair trouble air time he used "air," meaning "every," or "any." This seems authentic Appalachian dialect, although it did nair appear in the short stories written in the 1950's,
which just seemed altogether "fresher" and more alive than the novels written in the late 1970's and early 1980's. I kept wondering whatever had happened to Evadare,
John's true love who was ready to go anywhere with him when they left Hosea's Hollow. She is mentioned, but does not appear.
I have known and remembered John since I was fourteen, and I am now sixty. John is our own mythic hero, our personal and our national Robin Hood, Knight Errant, and Aragorn.
Somewhere he is still wandering alone through the Mountains of Magic, forever young, forever true of heart, forever simple, mysterious, and forever American.
Sometimes I almost hear his songs, and sometimes he tells new stories to me, just as he did for Mr. Wellman.
