Selected Poems of Rumi (Dover Thrift Editions: Poetry) Paperback – March 17, 2011
Purchase options and add-ons
In recent years the stirring, unforgettable poetry of Jalālu’l-Dīn Rūmī (1207–1273), the great Sūfi teacher and the greatest mystical poet of Iran, has gained tremendous popularity in the western world. Although he died over 700 years ago, his poetry is timeless. In the best modern translations, the passion and playfulness of his words reach across the ages to communicate themselves to people today with an undiluted fervor and excitement.
Rūmī produced an enormous body of work — as many as 2,500 mystical odes, 25,000 rhyming couplets, and 1,600 quatrains — some of it instructional, some personal and emotional, much of it sublimely beautiful. The present volume includes over 100 of his finest lyrics, including "The Marriage of True Minds," "The Children of Light," "The Man who Looked Back on his way to Hell," "The Ascending Soul," "The Pear-Tree of Illusion," "The Riddles of God," and many more.
"In some of these poems," says A. J. Arberry in the Introduction, "the mystic's passion is so exuberant, his imagination so overflowing, that we catch glimpses of the very madness of Divine experience."

I think it's difficult to translate to begin with Rumi I think more difficult to still.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 19, 2021I have been floating around in Rumi's and
Hafiz's wine barrels for 50 years. And just
in the last month or so got wonderful
kicked in the teeth with some poems in this
book. So many in the world now have a book
of Rumi in their house. This tooo will unfurl your wing -- mind & heart at times. There is
to me ... some real rock-n-roll going on here!

And even have a couple books out about
Hafiz & Rumi.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 2, 2023I find the Sufi literature very interesting, but I don't know enough about its details to fully appreciate this thin book of Rumi poems. I must admit I've found the Mulla Nasrudin stories of Idries Shah more moving, which goes to show indeed how little I know of this literature.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 19, 2023My husband loves this book. So glad I could get it for him
- Reviewed in the United States on April 17, 2013I love Rumi and I have read a lot of his works. This book was so cheap, I was suspicious - and I should have been. It's not best translation and the layout is just awful, horrible font, difficult to read, cluttered. It makes it difficult to get lost in his words. I would definitely recommend Rumi to anyone, but not this edition. There are better, clearer, more beautiful versions out there.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 12, 2014rumis works all have this element of deep insights into what bliss might feel like if one just lets go of all thproblems and illusions we cling to so tightly, after you read a few of his poems you really want to meet him to see what he was like i usually read a book till i get drowsy but i found myself feeling relaxed not tired so i would recommend this book to anyone who wants a slightly different take on what we are and how easy love can be

Packed with a variety of poetry, each and every one giving a certain perspective to the subtle things of the soul in daily life, that one cannot help but feel with sincerity and simplicity, humbly.

3.0 out of 5 stars RUMI SIEMPRE BIEN EDICION BAJA CALIDAD DE PAPEL INGLÉS BRITÁNICO.
COMPRE EL LIBRO PARA UN REGALO NO SABIA QUE ERA TAN SENCILLA LA EDICIÓN, AUNQUE TIENE BASTANTES NOTAS. Y ES UNA TRADUCCIÓN DE INGLÉS BRITÁNICO
EL PAPEL NO ME GUSTO ES MUY SENCILLO LA LETRA PEQUEÑA PERO SI SE PUEDE LEER EL CONTENIDO PRECIOSO.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good
Excellent translation from R.A. Nicholson. Much more to it than neutered translations of Barks and few other translators who all strive to turn the medieval islamic mystic ( a mystic in this context is an inspired scholar) into some very vague 'spiritual' teacher. Amazon also sells the Mathnawi in three volumes all translated by R.A. Nicholson as well. Nicholson or A.J. Arberry seem so far the only translators who have really tried to be faithfull to wordings Rumi has used throughout his works instead of being focused solely in delivering gentle quotations for get-well cards. Really nice.
