Wellingtons Dearest Georgy Kindle Edition
Using a wealth of unpublished sources, this book tells the story of Lady Georgiana Lennox and the unique friendship she cherished with the 1st Duke of Wellington. Georgy first met the Duke on his return from India when he was serving under her father the Duke of Richmond who was then Lord Lieutenant of Ireland. The Lennox family moved to Brussels in 1813 and Georgy's mother threw the now legendary Duchess of Richmond's Ball the night before the Battle of Waterloo. Georgy had a front row seat to the battle, and remained in Brussels afterwards to help the many wounded soldiers who returned from the front. Georgy was a beautiful and immensely popular young lady with many suitors during her youth. She and the Duke enjoyed a flirtatious early friendship, which blossomed into an intimate friendship in later years. At twenty-nine Georgy married the future 23rd Baron de Ros who became a diplomatic spy and later Governor of the Tower of London. Georgy had three children, and died at the impressive age of 96, by which time she was one of the last people alive who had been a personal friend of the Iron Duke.

Review
"We whole-heartedly recommend Wellington’s Dearest Georgy. It is a fascinating biography of an aristocratic lady but it is more than that. It is the story of one of the most interesting periods in our history told from a different perspective than that usually given and, therefore, one which sheds new light on the events and characters of the age." ― All Things Georgian
"Elegantly written....the book as a whole is riveting: a must for history lovers." ― The Lady

Besides the in-depth relationship between Georgiana Lennox and Arthur Wellesley, 1st Duke of Wellington, it gave me knowledge of the aristocratic families and how they worked, why so many of these families moved from England. enjoyed becoming aquatinted with Georgy who live a full and long life

Well-written and well-researched, this book is most enjoyable. The author gives a well-rounded picture of a long and interesting life. So much more to Georgiana's life than the Waterloo ball.

Unique original research and good storytelling
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on August 29, 2017
This biography of the hitherto long forgotten Georgiana Lennox, later Baroness de Ros, offers an unusual perspective on someone much more famous: Arthur, Duke of Wellington, the hero of Waterloo. The two were, remarkably, steadfast friends until Wellington’s death despite a 26-year age gap and a mutual but unrealised romantic attraction (it matured into a firm friendship).
Using documents in the de Ros family archive, Alice Marie Crossland traces their relationship and reveals to us little-appreciated aspects of the Duke’s complex personality. We hear anecdotes of his raucous party game of pulling ladies seated on rugs around the corridors of grand houses and of horsing around with his many godchildren, but also of his kindness to the terrified young woman who was being presented to him as a possible future daughter-in-law. In his affectionate friendship with Georgy he shows himself as kind, considerate and generous.
Crossland’s writing style is accessible and informal and she has wisely focused on relating the story rather than on weighty explications of background and context. Her scene-setting is deft and lightly-done and there are some excellent descriptions, especially of the events at the ball in Brussels (given by Georgy’s mother) before the Battle of Waterloo.
Many will enjoy this book for its engaging portrait of an unusual friendship, the new perspectives on Wellington, and for the unique account of the life of a young female aristocrat in the Regency period.

Delightful
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on October 17, 2017
Firstly, this is a beautifully produced book with the cover featuring 2 of Georgy's illustrated panels and some very nice composite paintings. The typeface and spacing avoids the look of a weighty, serious, historical tome and therefore invites you to start reading. There is also an excellent selection of colour and black/white illustrations throughout. Despite the fact that almost all the direct correspondence between the 2 main protagonists was destroyed, Ms Crossland has undertaken a splendid piece of research to produce a charming story of the intertwined lives of some of the greatest aristocratic families of the early 19th century. Georgiana is a fascinating character and you warm to her instantly. As a long time student of the Duke of Wellington, I bought this book in the hope of seeing a different side to his character. I was richly rewarded as he is shown to be a warmer, more human character than that normally portrayed in more conventional histories, particularly in his fondness for both intelligent women and children. The true nature of the relationship between the Duke and Georgiana will never be known (this is NOT a salacious "kiss 'n tell") but they clearly held each other in the highest regard throughout many decades. A delightful book that is very highly recommended.

A surprisingly great holiday read
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on October 10, 2017
To be honest a historical biography is not the first thing I would think take away on holiday but I was given this as a gift so thought I'd give it a go. I was a bit worried at first that this was going to be bit of a heavy read and a bit too factual (it's a historical biography after all) plus I didn't know anything about wellington or waterloo so I thought it would all go over my head.
Surprisingly this actually had everything I wanted. A proper storyline, gripping with some juicy drama in it - not to mention the history part is actually fascinating without being too heavy and making you feel like you were back at school which is always great.
If nothing else, I've bought one for my grandma and my mum so I think that says it all really. Great gift Aunty Sue - thanks!
