Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Patterson jumps on the superheroes bandwagon with contributor Ledwidge and delivers the adventures of Daniel X, a superpowered alien whose mission is to defend Earth from more malignant, threatening aliens. In his first adventure, listeners hear the typical origin story (parents killed by the most vile alien on Earth), his early adventures (growing up on his own with amazing powers) and his first real step into manhood (facing off against another alien). The story throws in a few interesting twists, but isn't particularly dynamic as superhero narratives go. The production is sparsely sprinkled with sound effects, which work quite well and add to the story, but there is a lack of consistency to their execution. However, Milo Ventimiglia makes it worth the listen. His timing and inflection match perfectly with Daniel, the first-person protagonist. He sounds youthful enough to be believable as Daniel and easily transitions to other character voices within the story. A Little, Brown hardcover. (July)

My very first young adult book reading experience and it was great! I purchased this book simply because of two things: it's another joint venture of JP and ML, and second, the production descriptions on the back cover: In the spirit of the most enduring hit movies and books...this story (is) for readers from ten to a hundred and ten.
I like reading popcorn fictions and DDODX is simply my kinda book. Fast pace, cinematic and a character you root for. While I read the book, I saw it in my mind the whole time a Disney.Pixar animation blockbuster.
Daniel is such a lonely character that you can't help but liking him: an orphan/alien whose parents get whacked by bad aliens, he has no friends but conjuring up a bunch with his will power, so he can talk to or joke with when feeling lonely. The dinner scene in one chapter with his imaginary parents gathering around the table nearly brought tears to my eyes.
I never imagined a young adult book would have such a great impact on me, and one thing I'm gonna do next: outline the first draft of my own SF/YA novel.
Write on, JC and ML!

I bought this to see how the series was. To be honest; I just bought #5 in the series this week. Does that tell you anything?nI have all 5 in the series now. The first book here kept me hooked till the end. It is a great book for younger readers and will want to make them read more. Not just for childern; I would recomend for anyone that wants to just sit and enjoy something different. I found the first 5 to be well worth the super price I got them for thru Amazon. Some i paid a penny for the audio book; and just paid the $3.99 shipping; can not beat that with a stick. $4.00 total for a brand new Audio book still in the origional wrapper and box. I will take that anyday. Give this series a shot for yourself, bet you will be buying the other 4 also.

I bought this book for my son "Daniel" because he needed to read for 30 minutes a night for homework. Reading is NOT is favorite subject but, since the main character had his name and the "bad aliens" were making video games (which he loves) to destroy the world I thought it might keep his interest. Not only did he love it but, he said he wanted to read ALL the books of the series..which I ended up buying from Amazon. Thanks!!!

The Dangerous Days of Daniel X was a quick romp of playful imagination. I always enjoy following Patterson's creative mind. I got his Maximum Ride series for my grandson - but was soon hooked on the outcome of his very colorful and endearing characters. Daniel X leads you into the same pattern - you learn quickly to care about the main character. To hang spell bound on his Destiny and to enjoy following him on the twists and turns of the Journey that leads him there. I look forward to the next book in the series. The audio book gives you such a great preview of it.

I liked the pace. It was a fun read. And I loved the enthusiasm and the story. It was an awesome experience!

I was mildly disappointed with this book. It seemed to go by too quick with very little detail; almost reading as a brainstorm than an actual novel. The ideas and originality were there, but it definitly lacked depth. I kept thinking of The Host, by Stephanie Meyer, as I read this; and how much better it was for having a similar concept. I just felt like the aliens themselves could have been given more detail, he could have taken the time to really describe them and go into details, but it seemed as though everything was summed up and rushed through. The only time the book slowed to a decent pace was near the end, at which point the description and story really reached where it should have been all along.

I will say, after reading this I passed it on to my 9 year old, and he LOVED it. He's a big Ben10 fan and really related this book to that show, reading it almost as quickly as I did. So for kids, I do recommend this, though it doesn't even begin to compete with the bestselling kids books out there. For adults, I would not recommend.

James Patterson has such an entertaining easy to read writing style. It's an easy read and nothing like harry potter! The only parallel is the dead parents and the loveable characters :) I was very impressed and thoroughly recommend it!
