Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Gr 9 Up—Lola, a white 17-year-old, is used to living in the shadow of her famous father, movie director Nolan Nox, though another shadow has followed her around her whole life, that of her mother, Lorelai, who disappeared when Lola was five. After a fight, Lola returns home to find her dad has been badly wounded and taken to the ER. In the immediate aftermath, Lola is encouraged to temporarily live with her grandma, Lorelai's mom, in her hometown of Harrow Lake, where Lola's mom had been the star of her dad's biggest movie success. Upon arrival in town, she realizes Harrow Lake is full of superstitions and she slowly stitches together a story about her mom while also trying to determine if the town's local horror legend, Mr. Jitters, is real. Both aided and held back by the locals and her own memories, Lola attempts to solve all the mysteries, even if it costs her life. Ellis's horror-thriller leads readers down the road of looking for a supernatural monster, but they end up meeting a monster of the natural world. VERDICT A gripping tale that keeps readers turning the pages to find out if the monsters are real.—David Roberts, Salem P.L., OH

Finally! A horror read to keep you turning the pages terrified at nearly every moment! Kat Ellis' Harrow Lake was the page-turning thriller I had been waiting for this Halloween season! This book was super creepy and eerie that will have you jumping at every creak of the house and breeze rustling the windows. Omg, this book was terrifyingly awesome!

Lola is the daughter of movie genius Nolan Nox, who is famous for all his horror movies. She pretty much lives in his shadow as he doesn't like her going out anywhere, else he approves it and doesn't let her use a cell phone or laptop except for school purposes. He's your average megalomaniac overprotective parent! But when Lola comes home the night before they're to move and finds him stabbed and bleeding to death, she's frightened. Though it's not long before she's shipped off to live with runaway mother's mother at Harrow Lake while Nolan heals.

Harrow Lake was the place Nolan filmed his iconic horror movie and where he met Lorelei, Lola's mother. When Lola was five, Lorelei pulled a runaway and abandoned her to her father's whims. Lola isn't overly impressed with the small town, though the town still touts its fame to Nolan's movie. They even have an annual festival in its honor.

Strange things keep happening in this eerie little town. Her grandmother isn't the overly friendly type and may or may not be a little on the crazy side. Then there's the fact that the very next morning upon her arrival, Lola's suitcase vanishes and she's forced to wear her mother's old clothes, clothes she wore for her character in the movie that brought her to fame.

But that's not the only strange thing happening in town. Her father based part of his horror movie on a legend involving a creepy old timer who got trapped underground in a landslide and turned cannibal, Mister Jitters is his name. The weird things happen on the regular once Lola gets into town and it is downright creepy! The shadows she sees out of the corner of her eye, freaky dolls moving when they shouldn't, ghostly figures...is it all in Lola's imagination or is this town really harboring dark secrets?

You guys! This book is seriously creepy! Kat Ellis sure knows how to lure her readers into a false sense of security. This book will have you needing to re-read the pages just to make sure you caught onto the strange and eerie, as I did more than once! The ending was positively bone-chilling as well! A satisfying bone-chilling that is! Though I did hope that perhaps a few things would've been clarified. Like if the eerie things happening were really real or somewhat real...were they paranormal in nature or the evil that is human? Little things like that.

Although, not having that answer doesn't deteriorate from the story at large. It may in fact add to its overall eerieness. The kind of eerieness we all enjoy from a good horror story! Harrow Lake is definitely one I'd recommend if you're looking for a super creepy and terrifying read! It's got the most satisfying of endings as well when it comes to horror. Sure there are a few things I would've liked clarification on, but I'm not devastated by the lack of concrete answers.

Teenager Lola Nox is the daughter of horror filmmaker Nolan Nox. The book opens with Nolan being interviewed for Scream Screen Magazine. As the questions turn to the disappearance of Lola the interview cuts off and we are then sent back a year in time.

The year before Nolan is found stabbed in his apartment by Lola. Whilst Nolan is in the hospital there is no one else to look after Lola so she is sent to stay with the Grandmother she has never met before in Harrow Lake, the place where her father filmed his movie Nightjar, featuring Lola’s mum who disappeared when she Lola was just five years old.

Harrow Lake is a strange small town haunted by the past in which a landslide killed some of the residents. Rumour has it that one of the buried residents now wanders the town of a night time looking for victims to eat after he got the taste for flesh.

From the moment Lola arrives she has a weird feeling about the place and her Grandmother, who seems to be suffering from dementia and treats Lola like she is her missing daughter, even making her wear her clothes she has kept all these years. She also keeps seeing a girl following her and jitterbugs tapping and moving on their own. It’s all in her head though, isn’t it?

I’m not of YA age and I read a lot of psychological thrillers, suspense books, paranormal stories and as such whilst I thought this book was engaging and interesting I did not find it scary nor creepy in any sense, but I can see why those that are not used to these genres or those that are scared easily would given the nature of the plot. You need to remember this is a YA book so the horror aspect isn’t going to be what you would find in a Stephen King or Dean Koontz novel.

The book is based around Lola and her time in Harrow Lake. I can’t say she is a particularly nice character, in fact, she grated on me quite a lot with the way she viewed the world and her attitude which was down to the way she had been brought up, such as you shouldn’t say sorry or thank you to people nor show weakness.

The storyline itself is full-on and intriguing. As we know from the beginning that Lola disappears I was held captivated wanting to know what happens to her, does the creepy man get her? Is there something more sinister going on? I was eager to find out.

The ending I had mixed feelings about, partly because I was left wanting to know more about the past, but happy there was closure for Lola.

I'll be honest, I bought this because of its cover, sprayed edges and because I fancied freaking myself out. Definitely delivered on the cover - it's so cool - and the book is even more freaky than I had anticipated.

Lola's father is a famous horror movie director, her mother the star of his 1920s epic 'NightJar' set in Harrow Lake. Lola hasn't seen her mother since she was 5 and is simply told she ran away. When her father ends up in hospital, Lola is sent to live with her estranged grandmother in Harrow Lake. Whilst there, Lola goes from being a skeptic of the local Mr Jitters folklore, to fully convinced there is someone - something - in the woods. As she falls down a rabbit hole of uncovering why people constantly go missing around Harrow Lake, she unwittingly finds herself retracing her mother's last steps and uncovering a childhood trauma buried so deep only Mr Jitters' spindly fingers can pry it from her mind.

There are so many things to praise this book for. It's hooky opening, the wonderful way it flips the narrative on its head by flitting between first person, diary entries and interview transcripts. The ending delivers a delicious sense of resolution. It's so SO masterful and I'm so pleased to have found it. I'll definitely be checking out the author's other books.

4.0 out of 5 stars Harrow Lake by Kat Ellis

Lola Nox lives in the shadow of her famous horror filmmaker father, Nolan, and her absent movie star mother, Lorelei. After a devastating event at home she’s sent to Harrow Lake, the small town her mother grew up in, to stay with her grandmother. A grandmother she’s never met before. In a town which featured in her father’s most famous film, Nightjar, the film which made Lorelei a star. On arrival she discovers everyone in Harrow Lake is obsessed with her mother and Nightjar. To the point where they hold a regular festival and parade for the tourists. There’s literally no escape! But Harrow Lake has its own secrets and as Lola starts to dig deeper, she find out about the missing girls. Who – or what – is responsible for their disappearance? And will Lola be next…?

Harrow Lake is a compulsive and chilling YA horror novel which sent shivers down my spine. It’s a modern-day take on an 80s horror movie and I enjoyed every single moment of it. Not only is Harrow Lake a creep-fest but to ratchet things up a notch it has its own town legend – Mister Jitters. The residents live in fear and carry out macabre practices such as leaving their teeth tied to the bone tree to stop Mister Jitters from wanting to get a taste of their bones (😱). It’s the stuff nightmares are made of and Ellis has told such a vivid tale that you feel at times like you’re actually living the horror alongside Lola.

I couldn’t get enough of the setting nor the characters who all stand tall. Lola was difficult to like initially but you grow to like and admire her. I was with her every step of the way (despite wishing I wasn’t at times). Lola’s grandmother made me feel uncomfortable from the first meet. She’s a closed-off, odd woman who has plenty of devastating secrets of her own. There are some pretty unlikeable, well-written characters in Harrow Lake and their strange behaviour and peculiar ways really kept me on my toes.

Would I recommend this book? I would, yes. Harrow Lake is a very immersive, vivid tale and I thoroughly enjoyed it. I loved the small town feel of the story, the claustrophobia and the heaps of unease the author has woven into the book. It’s a compelling YA novel which I heartily recommend to young and *erm* slightly older horror fans. I would make sure you pick up a copy soon otherwise Mister Jitters may come-a-knocking… Recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars More Fairy tale than horror story
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on November 5, 2020
I really liked this story, it reminds me of a teen version of Alice in wonderland, with it's jumps from reality to dreams and back again. It's very well plotted and I really loved the stories main character, Lola. Lola was bright and funny (a bit stroppy) and cool.
The way the story forced her into a 1920's world was very optimal as she searched for her mother in the scary town of Harris Lake. At certain points I got slightly frustrated by not knowing if what I was reading was reality or not, and I would have liked a conclusion for Carter and his abusive mother. However, in general, this was a very mysterious read. It felt more like a dark fairy tale or mystery,or both, than a horror because I didn't find it scary. But still a very well written story from a fellow Welsh person.

3.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant premise
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on October 24, 2020
I loved the premise and the cover for this title. There was a lot of hype and I was intrigued and excited to see if it delivered.

It does and it doesn’t. I did absolutely race through this, it is creepy and unsettling, and it does have a fantastic setting and atmosphere. But there were a lot of unresolved plot points which I found frustrating and I was disappointed that one of the reveals and plot twists (spoiler) was to do with a child being sexually abused, again. I just feel that it shouldn’t be used in this way in YA fiction and that it’s a lazy and unoriginal way to explain a dark family secret.

I do love this genre and would still read another title by this author - this book is compelling and I’m interested to see what the author does next.
