The Flight To Brassbright (The Brassbright Chronicles Book 1) Kindle Edition

4.6 4.6 out of 5 stars 26 ratings

Constance is a wild, stubborn young girl growing up poor in a small industrial town in the late 1800's. Beneath her thread-worn exterior beats the heart of a dreamer and a wordsmith. But at age twelve, she’s orphaned. Running away to join the circus—like kids do in adventure books—seems like such a brilliant idea… or is it?

About the Author

Lori Alden Holuta lives between the cornfields of Mid-Michigan, where she grows vegetables and herbs, when she's not playing games with a cat named Chives. She's fond of activities from the past, including canning and preserving, crochet and cooking. She's learning how to make her own wines and cheese.
Her lifelong fascination with the Victorian era dovetails nicely with articles she has written for The Primgraph, a magazine focusing on historical eras in virtual worlds, as well as movie and book reviews for Steampunk Magazine. She also served as Editor-In-Chief for Penny Gaff Publications, a small independent publishing house which produced serial adventures in the old penny novel style.

The Flight to Brassbright, set in a quasi-Victorian era, is her first novel.

The Flight To Brassbright is a beautiful coming of age story that shows that although dark days loom over us all, a positive outlook on life can make even the worse situations feel better. The heroine, Constance Whittlesey, tells her story in the first person, bringing a storyteller's charm to the entire adventure. You immediately fall in love with the character and root for her throughout the entire book, only to find that you have to leave her just when her adventure is truly beginning (disappointing as that was, it leaves the reader to dream of what Constance will be capable of in the future and hoping to hear more of her tales). Along the way, she meets many colorful characters that add their own unique spin on the story, giving Constance encouragement and assistance, yet forcing her to follow her dreams regardless of the obstacles ahead. Though lacking in conflict, I found this to be a pleasant change from other adventures in that her story flows with a positive outlook on life, finding the good in strangers and encourages one to make dreams reality. I highly recommend this book to children and adults alike as it will inspire you regardless of your age.

Lori Alden Haluta's debut novel is a delightful read that will appeal to teens and young adults as well as some not-so-young adults. The tone is light and witty--I found myself smiling often at a turn of phrase or laughing at a clever twist--and the themes are positive and uplifting.

In "The Flight to Brassbright" Holuta has crafted the world of Industralia where the protagonist tells her story of finding her freedom and the quirky characters who help her along her way. On her journey she learns that everyone has a tale to tell, including herself, and that people like to hear each other's stories. I know I'm certainly looking forward to future stories out of Industralia through Holuta's quill.

After Constance's mother dies, she runs away with a traveling circus. Maybe not the best idea as she finds herself running from it too, and following her dream to become a writer. (I wish there really were places like the Inkwell, LOL) Lea Popielinski does a great job with the narration, her accents and cadence is perfect for the storyline. I loved this! Flight to Brassbright appeals to my inner child's desire for adventure and independence as well as my (mostly) grown up desire for really well written stories that capture my imagination and hold my attention. This is also a great introduction to Steampunk literature, if you are new to the genre, as I am. I really can't wait to see what happens next in Brassbright, and I hope to hear more of Constance's adventures!

A promising and intriguing idea that fails to really fulfill its promise; the lead character faces very little adversity once she escapes her situation and no real obstacles to her goal that are not resolved within a few lines or a page or two. There is some quirky dialogue but the author suffers somewhat from having most all the characters sound alike, answering Constance's questions concisely and perhaps overly thoroughly on her first time of asking. Everyone she meets is helpful and cheerful; the storyline is uncomplicated, there's no immediate danger at any point along her journey. It's difficult to relate to a heroine character who very literally has everything handed to her by everyone else. Without much struggle, being borne along by her helpful friends, it's difficult to find an emotional connection to Constance and her sole goal of becoming a writer seems somewhat wasted in a Steampunk genre where the draw for many is about the technology and gadgets that proliferate and accentuate characters' adventures. Indeed, it seems very cut and dried at its conclusion, rather than keeping a reader on tenterhooks awaiting more. Overall, it felt rather bland and uneventful rather than compelling.

There is indeed some potential in the world created here, and I wish not to disparage the author's first time outing. There are some nice touches in the descriptions and the book is largely well edited with only a couple of tense slips.

This magical story introduced me to a new universe, one in which I hope to spend a great deal more time. The descriptions are fanciful and imaginative; the characters realistic and compelling. I heartily recommend this book for young adults to whet their appetite for storytelling, and to other older folks who need to remember what is really important in the big scheme of things. Thanks, Ms. Holuta, for this wonderful book.

The first installment of the Brassbright Chronicles takes the reader on a whirlwind adventure through a colorful world that is filled with even more colorful characters. The heroine, Constance, is a clever and incredibly lucky young woman who has the great fortune of falling into exactly the right place at the right time. I can't wait for the next installment.

Excellent adventure and fun to picture the travels and travails of a young girl who becomes a young lady in the strangest of ways. I do hope the next Brassbright saga will come out very soon. This author has a way of sharing her characters that make it easy to picture them. Lots of fun reading.
