About the Author

Lyssa Kay Adams read her first romance novel at way too young of an age when she swiped one from her grandmother’s stash. After a long journalism career in which she had to write way too many sad endings, she decided to return to the stories that guaranteed a happy ever after. Once described as “funny, adorable, and a wee-bit heartbreaking,” Lyssa’s books feature women who always get the last word, men who aren’t afraid to cry, and dogs. Lots of dogs. Lyssa writes full time from her home in Michigan, where she lives with her sports writer husband, her wickedly funny daughter, and a spoiled Maltese who likes to be rocked to sleep like a baby. When she’s not writing, she’s cooking or driving her daughter around from one sporting event to the next. Or rocking the dog.

When you look at the cover the first things many readers assume is that this is just another 𝗥𝗢𝗠𝗔𝗡𝗧𝗜𝗖 𝗖𝗢𝗠𝗘𝗗𝗬. And while that may be true in some respects (the secondary characters for example had me laughing out loud) this book dealt with some serious issues like 𝗠𝗔𝗥𝗜𝗧𝗔𝗟 𝗦𝗧𝗥𝗜𝗙𝗘 and potential divorce. One would think a romcom can’t handle these subjects by Lyssa Kay Adams proved that it can be done because this book was a really great read! There were a few things that bothered me though and I’ll explain those below.I liked Gavin A LOT. He’s a down to earth character and his growth through the book was wonderful to see. I especially loved how I FELT like he wanted to change for the better and did do. Unfortunately, I didn’t LOVE Thea. I found her to be a little too abrasive, and her treatment of Gavin to be unjustified. I get that she has a backstory that makes her attitude make sense to the reader, but I never felt like she truly redeemed herself. It was like one minute she’s a nasty witch and the next she’s sweet and adorably in love. It gave me whiplash!Other than that, I found this to be a gem of a read and I loo forward to reading the rest of the books in the series. I hope they get funnier as they go because I enjoyed the humor that we saw in this one.𝗣𝗘𝗥𝗙𝗘𝗖𝗧 𝗙𝗢𝗥 𝗙𝗔𝗡𝗦 𝗢𝗙:• Romantic Comedies• Book with struggling MCs (especially within a marriage)• Authors like Sarah Hogle, Talia Hibbert, and Sally Thorne𝗠𝗬 𝗥𝗔𝗧𝗜𝗡𝗚: ⭐⭐⭐⭐ (3.5 to be exact)𝗛𝗘𝗔𝗧: 🔥 🔥 🔥 | it took a while to get there

Second chance romances aren't normally my thing, but I really enjoyed this and would probably even be tempted to give it a 4.5 rating. Was it perfect? No. But I really liked the premise of a romance book club run by men, for men, to support them in being the best partners they can be and better understand women. The actual book club did have a bit of a mansplaining vibe to me as the guys were dissecting romance novels and describing what women want and need and I know this sounds strange since it was written by a woman, but I'm still putting it out there. I've seen that quite a few reviews weren't into the main characters. I actually liked them for the most part but boy oh boy were some of their choices frustrating.

The books starts with Gavin, a pro-baseball player, lamenting his life and choices as his wife, mother of his two twin girls and love of his life, Thea, has thrown him out of the house after he'd spent a month giving her the silent treatment. Basically, for the duration of their relationship, Thea has been faking orgasms. Her husband noticed when she had a genuine one, hence the hurt feelings and sullen actions. Thea asks for a divorce and Gavin drowns his sorrows serving as the basis for the Bromance Club to step in and try to save his marriage.

The entirety of the story revolved around Gavin being a successful baseball player and Thea trying to fit into his work and somewhat losing her identity at the same time. I loved Gavin. I was frustrated through a lot of the book because he was breaking his neck to get another chance only to be continually shut down, yelled at or pushed away by Thea who sometimes came across in a negative light. I get the reasons behind her decisions but I still found her choices a little cold or unexplainable at times. She had a mountain of relationship hang ups regarding marriage and relationships as a result of a tumultuous childhood, but it still made me want to throw my Kindle a couple of times. I found a lot of the fault behind the marriage breakdown was placed on Gavin which wasn’t really fair. The secondary characters were great apart from Thea’s moody, acerbic sister.

The writing was solid and the splashes of humour, especially between Gavin and Mack (a club member and a dynamite character) were a highlight. The book doesn’t beat around the bush and gets straight into the thick of things from the get go. Some of it is a tad on the overly dramatic side, but that added a nice bit of angst here and there. As this is based around a romance book club, the story flicks occasionally to a regency romance being read by Gavin and I really enjoyed this fresh take written into the story. One of the things I loved the most about this book was Gavin’s stutter. It made him self-conscious and, at times, terrified and I loved it.

As most of the story revolved around Gavin trying to get a resistant Thea to take another chance on their marriage, some of the elements were a tad repetitive at times, but not annoyingly so. I found that it seemed a bit unlikely that Thea, with her background of being raised by fickle and neglectful parents, wouldn’t want to try and make her marriage work for both herself and her kids. A bit unrealistic, but I guess then there’d be no story otherwise  Most of the story line was pretty predictable and it was a little cheesy towards the end, but it was cute, feel good cheese.

While there were a few minor things (for me) that stopped the story from being a five star rating, the premise was sweet and I enjoyed it. I guess the moral to the story is that communication is key to all relationships and these main characters learnt it the hard way as they both were severely lacking. I’m glad I’ve picked up the second book and look forward to reading it.

“Romance novels are primarily written by women for women, and they’re entirely about how they want to be treated and what they want out of life and in a relationship. We read them to be more comfortable expressing ourselves and to look at things from their perspective.”

Gavin is a Major League Baseball player whose marriage is on the brink of ending for good. He doesn't want his marriage to end but he isn't sure if he'll be able to restore the damage he has done. Luckily for Gavin, his teammates let him in on a little secret. They have been secretly reading and discussing romance novels as a way to learn how to love their partners better. They think they might be able to help Gavin mend his broken relationship with his wife but only if he agrees to do the reading.

you all, there is not another word I could think of to describe this book besides cute. The Bromance Book Club is adorable. The scenes where a bunch of masculine pro-athletes discuss their "manuals" (the name they give to their Regency Romance reads), is nothing if not endearing. I think I would have enjoyed this book if it only explored that aspect of the plot but it didn't stop there. I really appreciated the authors careful handiwork. She added some depth to a story that could have easily entered the overly-cloying-hallmark-movie-level of cute.

Halfway through The Bromance Bookclub I realized that I have read very few fictional takes on a couple actually trying to work through their "marriage problems". I think authors tend towards premises that involve cheating and irreparable damage to relationships because it creates a more volatile and provocative reading experience. I don't necessarily have an issue with that but I also don't relate to a storyline dedicated the the ruin of relationship. The Bromance Bookclub brought a really refreshing take on marriage that I have almost never experienced in my reading life. The problems that Thea and Gavin encounter in their marriage are repairable even though at first they seem insurmountable. Isn't that how all of our relationship problems seem when we find ourselves unable to zoom out and view the problem with the distance it usually needs to be resolved? That is more relatable to me and I really hope to find more books that highlight marital reconciliation.

Bromance Book Club did occasionally step into the cheesy lane but honestly, with subject matter like this, I can't fault the author for going there. This was a fun, easy-breezy, 3 star read. I have been leaning more heavily on lighthearted reads with happy endings due to the state of my own sanity during this quarantine period. If you find yourself leaning similarly, The Bromance Book Club might be a fun break from heavier reads!

Spice level 🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️ (last couple of chapters)

Omg I loved everything about this book . I was only 2 chapters in when I stopped reading and had to order the rest of the series asap 🥰- That’s how good this book was. I didn’t want it to end 😢

It’s also very funny and I loved how the author made each character sound like they were a real person,eg, the kids conversations sounded like kids, I could picture the men talking - really few authors can write and make different characters come alive especially with kids sometimes it just sounds like an adult talking but not this author she hit a ‘home run’ 😉

I can’t wait to read the next books in the series now……

I can can see this making a great movie or Netflix tv series too 🥰

I really loved this book! It was a unique story, very refreshing. I loved the concept of a love story about a married couple starting over. It was very sweet and funny. Both Gavin and Thea were very lovable characters, I was rooting for them the entire book! After reading this, I think all men should be required to be apart of a bromance book club LOL! Definitely going to check out book #2

5.0 out of 5 stars MARAVILHOSOOOOO!
Reviewed in Brazil on March 10, 2020
Comprei, li e AMEI. The Bromance Book Club é uma delicinha!

Seria inverossímil vê-lo, do nada, transformado.

Branden Mack. Fiquem de olho aqui no blog! 😉

Eu li a edição digital do livro e amo a capa!
