Tempest (Old West Book 3) Kindle Edition

4.8 4.8 out of 5 stars 1,163 ratings

From USA Today Bestselling Author Beverly Jenkins comes a new novel in a mesmerizing series set in the Old West, where an arranged marriage becomes a grand passion . . .

What kind of mail-order bride greets her intended with a bullet instead of a kiss? One like Regan Carmichael—an independent spirit equally at home in denims and dresses. Shooting Dr. Colton Lee in the shoulder is an honest error, but soon Regan wonders if her entire plan to marry a man she’s never met is a mistake. Colton, who buried his heart along with his first wife, insists he only wants someone to care for his daughter. Yet Regan is drawn to the unmistakable desire in his gaze.

Regan’s far from the docile bride Colton was expecting. Still, few women would brave the wilds of Wyoming Territory for an uncertain future with a widower and his child. The thought of having a bold, forthright woman like Regan in his life—and in his arms—begins to inspire a new dream. And despite his family’s disapproval and an unseen enemy, he’ll risk all to make this match a real union of body and soul.

Not my favorite book by Ms.Beverly!
2 Stars
Not my favorite book by Ms.Beverly!
Here’s reasons why I didn’t enjoy this particular book from my favorite author, without giving away too many spoilers.I didn’t like Colt in the beginning, he came off very rude and uppity to me, but clearly enjoyed the sexual side of Regan, which I kinda felt annoyed by. He wasn’t heroic to me in the sense of the romanticism with Regan, He only truly started to open up to her more after each sexual encounter. It was just sex, no really romanticism between the two of them . I did appreciate him more after in the book when he saw the interaction between Anna and Regan and admitting to himself that he loved her, but I guess I enjoy characters like Garret McCray and Ryder Damien that has more spice to me and more romanticism.I truly found the story boring and rushed at the end. There wasn’t even true suspense which is what I love about Beverly books. I did enjoy the true events in the historical aspect.I will keep this book is my Beverly collection even though I didn’t enjoy it.

CONCEPT
The adventure of Regan Carmichael as a Mail Order Bride

STORY

CHARACTERS
Tempest is the final installment of The Old West series (at least this is what I call the series). We met Regan in the following books FORBIDDEN and BREATHLESS. Regan inform her family in the last book that she agreed to be Mail Order Bride. Regan is leaving Arizona where she is embarking on a new chapter in her life, Regan is heading to Wyoming to meet her future husband Dr. Colton “Colt” Lee and his adorable young daughter.

Colton Lee is dealing with the death of his wife and trying to raise their six-year-old daughter, Colton is known for his old fashion beliefs and he is looking for a wife with the value. Regan & Colton first meeting does not fare well. No spoiler, but let just say that Regan was the opposite of Colton thought his mail order bride to be. Regan is an independent woman who is comfortable in a pair of jean who does not mind doing her share of work around the house. Colton is starting to believe he made a mistake with Regan, but he does come around and decide to give the marriage a try. Colton starts to see the change in Ana as her and Regan began spending time together. He now sees a happy child in Ana who is given the opportunity to be a child and have fun. Colton and Regan relationship also change you see the Colton who have begun to fall in love with his wife.

The secondary characters in the story also keep the flow of the story going. order bride.

DIALOGUE
Ms. Jenkins take you on a journey with Regan & Colton and they become this loving couple raising their daughter.

STRUCTURE
Tempest is a well-crafted story, where the story just flows.

OVERALL
Regan & Colton story is filled with love, fun, family. I highly recommend this book.

I loved the final installment to the Fontaine Series. Tempest's hero and heroine, Regan and Colt, were wonderful together despite their tough start. As always, Ms. Jenkins has a way of pulling a reader into the story. I feel like I'm in the story with the characters, as if in a movie at times. The poignant relationship with Colt's daughter Anna is so well drawn. I loved how Regan brought Anna out of her shell and showed her to embrace life with everything she had while at the same time letting Anna make the leaps when she was ready to make them. And she did the same with Colt, with humor and determination. The relationship between this mail-order bride and her doctor husband grew organically for me with amazing, sensual love scenes, witty dialogue, and genuine respect and trust. As always, Ms. Jenkins brings expert research into the historical drama as it unfolds and I continue to learn more about this country's volatile history while enjoying a great romance with fabulous characters.

Double thanks for the reunion at the end. I loved seeing the characters from the first two books one more time.

I can't wait to read Ms. Jenkins' next work of fiction. I highly recommend!

I love historical romances, and nobody, NOBODY, does historicals like Beverly Jenkins. This one starts off with a bang, literally, and draws you right in. Regan was truly a girl after my own heart; courageous, independent, smart - and a badass! She's just what the doctor needed. I liked serious, dedicated Colt; poor thing couldn't keep his heart safe from Regan no matter how hard he tried. And little Anna. She was so open to and accepting of Regan. After having been subjected to so many years of Minnie's strict, overbearing ways, it was nice to see her grow and blossom under her new Mama's love and guidance. She will definitely be a force to be reckoned with when she grows up.

Loved the little town of Paradise and it's townspeople. The way that they worked, lived, and celebrated together despite being of different races was wonderful, especially given the times. Absolutely loved Spring. I was hoping that she'd find a partner (had my eye on Ed Prescott), but I know our girl will be just fine. My heart went out to poor little Felicity, because she has a witch of a mama. Wish we could've seen Ben come around, but I suspect he's too old and stuck in his ways.

Thanks for including Regan's family reunion. It was great to see everybody and a wonderful way to end the book.

Excellent read!

This was an excellent historical romance set in the American West told from the perspective of and African American hero and heroine and yet, incredibly multicultural. Once again with another of Ms. Jenkins’ books I’ve learned so much just reading this about American history from other perspectives. A lot of this genre of romance tends to be white-washed but not this one.

This novel features the story of Regan, a wealthy young lady from Arizona territory who decides to be a male order bride for the sake of adventure meets Colt, widowered Wyoming Territory Doctor and single father who’s still very much married to the memory of his late wife. It’s very much on topic with this American historical western sub-genre of romance but there are additional themes of discrimination, suffrage, and a plot that considers that different races of people experienced history differently. I really appreciate the study notes that Beverly Jenkins our at the end to read further on the history. All of this said, don’t feel like this is a dark sort of serious books that sacrifices romance for pedantic history. This book is sweet and entertaining but it also acknowledges the past in a wholistic way and there’s nothing more you can ask from a historical romance. Highly recommend this and hunting down more books from this author.

4.0 out of 5 stars A strong introduction to a great author!

This is the first book that I've read from Beverly Jenkins and I really enjoyed it. I've always been skeptical about historical romance novels as in the context of minorities as books tend to ignore history sometimes to make the books more palatable. However, Ms. Jenkins doesn't fall victim to this as history is present and relevant in her books. I went back and read up on a couple of points she raised which made this book doubly interesting.

I really enjoyed the leads couple, though by the end they were both a little too perfect for my tastes. The doctor lead was the weaker of the character but the feistiness and confidence of our heroine carried the book.

Overall, I enjoyed the book except for the last 20% where the plot faltered. The lead couple refreshingly declared their love for each other so there was little tension left in the plot. Despite enjoying seeing glimpses of history the focus seemed to be less on our leads and more on the history. It was lopsided as the leads take a significant back-seat. The wrap up of the mystery menace especially was so rushed that I finished with a slightly off taste. I did feel like skipping to the end but I refrained.

Nonetheless, I would still strongly recommend this. Plus, I liked the cover as the guy was hot so extra bonus points for that!
