This was assigned to my 11-yr old daughter by a teacher who is working with her to overcome spelling problems. They are annotating. My daughter does not love reading at all. But she was hooked from the beginning. I have no idea what the book is about but I know she enjoys it and reads it willingly and annotates it and writes about the characters. It's an engaging book that is loved by teachers and students, so there you go

My daughter found this at the library and it quickly became her favorite book. She loved it so much that she read it out loud to her brothers and then asked me to read it. I loved it too! The characters are so likeable and real. They are flawed and feel like they don't quite fit anywhere, which I think is something most kids feel at one point in time. It's a good conversation starter. It's also just a captivating story!

Connect the Stars is about all kinds of connections. Connections that are mysterious and incomprehensible, especially to a group of middle school misfits. This story is full of angst, misunderstandings, betrayal, and suspense. The authors have given us real life characters faced with challenges from Mother Nature and the human race. But at the core the reader will find hope. And isn't that what we are all searching for anyway? Read this book!

Four misfit kids find each other and themselves, and we get to go along for the ride. And what a fun ride it is, through desert heat, flash flood, and the even scarier trials of growing up human.

I liked the premise of this book: kids trying to learn and grown in a desert wilderness camp. Plus…difficult team challenges. I liked the characters, even if some of the relationship were a little too perfect. I liked the writing. I liked seeing a novel set in the desert.

I did, however, find some things unrealistic. I'm not from the Texas desert, but I am from the Arizona desert, and some of the details seemed a bit off: the sunburn incident, the bat, a few of the descriptions, the nature-loving, desert-saavy leader even considering putting anything on a hoodoo, the irresponsibility of conducting a desert survival course with 16 inexperienced kids and one leader, especially when they split up a lot, etc. Also, flash floods definitely happen. They can be very dangerous. But I questioned some of the details there.

SOAPBOX WARNING. And now, for my pet peeve. It's a myth that the desert is boiling hot in the day and freezing cold at night. Yes, there's a bigger difference between daytime highs and nighttime lows than most other places. It's typical to have a 30-degree spread (Fahrenheit), whereas many more moderate climates swing more like 15-20 degrees, and some places moderated by sea breezes or other conditions vary even less. But unless you consider 80 degrees "boiling hot" and 50 degrees "freezing cold," then it's just nonsense. And this "nighttime chill" referenced in the book does not happen immediately after the sun goes down. I'm going to give an example. I admit it's an exaggerated example because Phoenix is one of the hottest places in the country, and it's also a huge city with lots of asphalt and such to absorb and retain the heat. However, on a typical summer evening in Phoenix, after a blisteringly hot day (110+), the sun sets and…guess what? It's still blisteringly hot. For hours. By midnight or so, it's just really hot. Near dawn it gets down to just uncomfortably warm. The open desert in Texas won't be quite this hot and won't retain the heat nearly as much, but it's still not going to be HOT one moment and COLD the next. And yes, the desert does freeze sometimes…in winter. After a chilly day. Argh! Why do respected publications and websites and published books constantly lead people to believe this hot-in-the-day-freezing-at-night myth? SOAPBOX OVER.

However, the unrealistic elements didn't detract too heavily from my enjoyment of the story, and some people won't care at all.

I really did love how the four main characters worked together and supported each other. Some of the descriptions of the desert were beautiful. I enjoyed seeing the kids adapt.

I would read more by Marisa de los Santos and David Teague
