Blood & Ash: A Snarky Urban Fantasy Detective Series (The Jezebel Files Book 1) Kindle Edition

4.4 4.4 out of 5 stars 5,309 ratings

"Wilde combines hardboiled noir and Jewish folklore in this action-packed, perfectly paced paranormal romp… This giddy, sexy series launch is a delight.” - Publishers Weekly (starred review)

Missing teens. Impossible magic. And the sexy nemesis who might drive her to murder.

Ashira Cohen takes great pride in the detective agency she’s built from scratch. It may be small, but she has big dreams.

None of which involve a stakeout gone wrong.

Or finding a mysterious tattoo hidden on her scalp.

Or discovering it’s a now-broken ward intended to suppress dangerous supernatural powers that she should not possess.

Don’t even get her started on the golem.

The only bright spot is that her unruly powers nearly kill her long-time nemesis, Levi, the uptight leader of the magic community. No, right… that’s a bad thing.

One word from him revealing her forbidden abilities, and everything she’s built will be taken from her… by force. Definitely bad.

Except, it seems Levi requires her unique set of skills to solve a spree of abductions. After years of being underestimated by him, it’s Ash’s chance at payback and she’s going to enjoy bringing him to his knees—or stuffing him in a body bag.
But with a sinister organization pulling strings from the shadows, can she rescue the captives and uncover the truth, or will the next blood spilled be her own?

If you like headstrong heroines, clever mysteries, and a dash of red-hot romance, you’ll burn through this wickedly funny series.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"Wilde combines hardboiled noir and Jewish folklore in this action-packed, perfectly paced paranormal romp. ... the real star is Ash's hilariously snarky narrative voice which is archly sarcastic but never mean. ... Wilde balances exuberant wit with deep compassion and handles Ash's chronic pain and fragmented family with care. This giddy, sexy series launch is a delight." - Publishers Weekly (Starred Review)

Deborah Wilde’s new Blood and Ash series isn’t just great—it’s stay up all night and go to work looking hung over great! this book will go straight to your favorites shelf so that you can reread. I cannot wait for the next in the series to come out! Blood and Ash is in a world where only a small percentage of the population has magical powers. The magic wielders grouped up for safety and power within the world. All who have powers only have one power, the rest are just mundane. Deborah does a superb job of weaving her story line with humor, intrigue, and of course a bit of romance. While Deborah concluded the first book’s problems nicely, she created a new mess for the protagonist to wade through for the next one. I am counting the days until its release!

In Deborah Wilde’s Blood & Ash, Vancouver is transformed into a city run by humans with magical powers organized into “House Pacifica,” which has its own rules and laws and quirks that control how the “mundanes” operate. Ashira Cohen, the only female private detective in the city is a mundane whose mother is part of the “Untainted Party,” a political group rivaling the House Pacifica. Ash likes to make her own rules, threading the needle between the two powerful forces calling the shots, and it isn’t easy. And that’s even before an air elemental knocks her on her ass during a surveillance job and Ash discovers she was born with … a little something extra.

This is the first in a series of novels, and the world-building and character set up are first rate. There are some genuinely horrifying moments as our heroine crosses paths with otherworldly “smudges” that attack both humans and their magical counterparts. The dark magic these things represent means she needs an ally and she finds one in Levi Montefiore, head of House Pacific and her nemesis since they met in childhood.

The magical world of Wilde’s alternate Vancouver is a lot of fun, and she throws in a lot of little details that really “sell” the magic. (My favorite is a scene where cake balls are offered at a party. Called “wish balls,” they will taste like whatever the eater wants them to taste like. Ash is partial to things that are maple syrup and bacon-flavored.) We like Ash a lot. She’s billed as a “snarky” narrator and she is. She reminded me a bit of Anita Blake from Laurell K. Hamilton’s urban fantasy series, complete with the enemies-to-lovers trope.

The underlying mythology is Jewish, a nice change from the usual Catholic backdrop, and the reason for how magic escaped into the world is tied into that. (Bonus points for the golem.)

There’s a genuine mystery here, and while the book solves it, there is plenty of room to develop the world and larger secrets in the sequels. I look forward to Ash’s new adventures

I was desperately in need of something upbeat and light after several emotionally heavy and draining books. I came across Blood & Ash and decided to give it a shot. I’d previously read Deborah’s Nava Katz series and enjoyed it, so I figured I’d try this one out! I did listen to the audiobook, narrarated by Hollie Jackson.

Overall, 4/5 stars for me! It was a really nice uncomplicated paranormal/magic detective story and I really enjoyed it. It was cool to see the Jewish religious aspects tied into the world building and mythology behind the magic system. It was really interesting and I can’t wait to see how it develops in the next book.

Ashira was fantastic and super funny, although I did find her snark somewhat overly forced at times, especially in her interactions with Levi. I get that her snark with him turned into a kind of defense mechanism, but it occasionally just felt like it was too much for me. I really enjoyed Levi too. He played the strong, stoic male with a hidden tragic backstory very well and I liked reading about him.

Side character wise, Priya is an awesome best friend and is super cool. I love a woman in STEM who knows what she’s talking about (and who loves peanut m&m’s). Arkady was also interesting. I wasn’t sure about him at first, but like Ash, I grew to like him. I hope to see more of him in the next book.

While we did see a few interactions with Talia and some descriptions of Adam, I hope to see more of both of them in the next books. Adam just has so much mystery I need answers! I wanted to like Talia, but I just couldn’t get past her and Ash’s relationship to care for her. Hopefully she’ll redeem herself in the next book.

The narrator was really strong with her voice, and I mostly enjoyed it. However, there were several times she was just a little too much for me.

All in all, I enjoyed this book a lot! It was very easy to read and I ended up reading it in one sitting, because it just felt so light and enjoyable to be reading. Definitely recommend and I will definitely be picking up the next book!

This is such a well written book. The characters are so well developed & their personalities are just addictive. You just want more interaction between them all but especially between Ash & Levi.

Aaahhh Levi. I wouldn’t mind having a Levi! The tension between him & Ash is heady. The way Wilde describes him, he’s easy to envision even down to….however he can still be a putz but his basic kindness forgives his abruptness & need to control.

Now Ash just ROCKS! Her snark is fantastically written. Her comebacks are priceless & you just can’t help but love her personality. Her past experiences & the details help define why she is jaded & only trusting of her ride or die, Priya. You can’t help but feel for her but you also understand what motivates her to be such a caring & loving person bent on righting wrongs done to others. And don’t get me started on her musical selection. After all I did say she rocks!
Anyone who can belt out Dream On by Aerosmith, one of my all time favorite songs, is ok by me!

The under current of racism against the magically endowed or Nefesh by the Untainted Party is ironic considering the division in America right now & our history. Ironic indeed. I’ve no doubt this will continue through the following books as well. I must say I completely delighted in Levi’s handling of the UP after one of the conflicts in the book.

There is much more to learn about the whole Jezebel mystery & I’m looking forward to a refresher in the second book. Yes, this is my second time reading this series. I absolutely love it! Deborah Wilde is such a talented author & I cannot recommend her books enough to do them justice. Enjoy!!!

I totally loved this book. It was full of action and the humour of the main character was out of this world. Ash is a strong individual, loyal to a fault, has a great sense of humour that has you laughing out loud. But the storyline is encompassing and does not let you go until it is finished with you.
I was taken with all the characters, there interactions and how they dealt with the situations that came their way.
I highly recommend this book and look forward to reading the next one.

It took me some time before I got really into the story, therefore the half star. I am not really sure why. Maybe because Ash came off a bit pathetic at the beginning, so not so likeable? Now I am totally in and will read the second book ASAP!

Ash is a P.I. on a case when she gets a knock to the head and now she has magic and not just any but rare Blood magic and now Ash has find out who put a ward on her blocking her magic.
She gets hired by Levi who is the leader of the magical community and the relationship between Ash and Levi makes you laugh.
It kept me guessing to the end if Ash would find Meryem and discover who put ward on her.
It was very enjoyable. And I finished it within day because I wanted to know what happened 😃 bring on book 2.

Fancy finding out one day that you have powers you didn't know about, and then trying to find out who betrayed you by cutting you off from them, all while trying to solve another crime, and working out who you can trust.
Only issue with this book is knowing from the start who Ash is going to end up with
