My Ancestors' Wildest Dreams Kindle Edition

4.8 4.8 out of 5 stars 89 ratings

This book was inspired by Ava Holloway and Kennedy George, two ballerinas. Their photos were taken by Marcus Ingram and Julia Rendleman in front of the monument of Confederate General Robert E. Lee, in Richmond, Virginia. Ultimately, those photographs went viral, and this moment propelled the duo into a summer of activism and dance. Posed in traditional ballet attire, the friends had no idea that a chance encounter at the Lee Monument would catapult them into the spotlight while serving as a beacon of hope for millions of young activists around the world.

Editorial Reviews

Review

The energy and passion of this artist-activists' story compels the reader to action. The illustrations are beautifully captivating, historical, and timely. The dancers are truly our ancestors' wildest dreams- to be outspoken advocates for change. Families, teachers and community leaders will find this book to be an excellent prompt in discussing the role of the arts and youth in social justice activism. Many congratulations to the authors for what is destined to become a classic in children's activist literature. -Dr. Joy Lawson Davis, Independent Diversity & Equity Scholar, Author of the award-winning "Bright, Talented & Black: A Guide for Families of African American Gifted Learners"

Amanda Loraine Lynch is a children’s book author best known for her work in trauma-informed care. Born and raised in Glen Allen, Virginia, Amanda’s love for writing started at a young age when she would doodle and write short stories on the back of her classwork in elementary school.

Amanda graduated from Mary Baldwin College with a Bachelor of Arts degree in African-American Studies and a Master of Arts in Teaching, which fueled her passion for disrupting historical trauma and adverse childhood experiences through literacy. Amanda worked in public education for nearly twenty years before transitioning into a career in prevention. Amanda’s work is often described as imaginative and fun and has been featured on Inside Edition, The Mighty, The Zoe Report, and many other news outlets.

When not writing, Amanda enjoys spending time with her children. Drawing upon her lived experiences, Amanda’s work is framed by the tragic loss of her husband, Marcus A. Lynch Jr., and her best friend, Angel J. Jackson.

Although no longer a school teacher, Amanda is a registered yoga teacher, mindfulness teacher, and trauma Informed trainer which affords her the opportunity to walk like a chicken and breathe like a bee with great frequency.

Currently, Amanda lives in Richmond, Virginia with her four children (Amani, Ava, Hazy, and Primmy) and her dog, Bentley.

The perfect lunch date companion book!

The perfect lunch date companion book!
I took this book with me to a business lunch meeting to read while waiting on my client to arrive. It was a great mid-day motivational story that gave me the morale boost needed to get through a long work week. When I got home, my children also loved the narrative and illustrations. It is a top 10 favorite on their summer reading log. Overall, this is a great picture book for mommies and children alike! None of Amanda Lynch's books and workbooks have disappointed my family - I highly recommend!
