Matt Groening, creator and executive producer of Fox’s Emmy Award®-winning series The Simpsons, made television history by bringing animation back to primetime and creating an immortal nuclear family. The Simpsons is the longest running primetime animated series in television history and is currently the longest-running comedy on television, having aired more than 400 episodes. In July 2007, the highly anticipated feature film The Simpsons Movie opened in theaters with worldwide grosses of more than $525 million to date.

Originally brought to life in 1987 for The Tracey Ullman Show, The Simpsons was Groening’s amazing entry into the television animation world. Previously, he was best-known for his “Life in Hell” cartoon strip, an irreverent portrayal of love, work, school, life and relationships that currently appears in more than 250 newspapers worldwide and in a multitude of books.

Groening’s other Emmy-Award®-winning creation, Futurama, launched on Fox in March 1999 and ran for five seasons. Last year Fox released the direct-to-DVD full-length original feature Futurama: Bender’s Big Score. Three additional films will be released and the entire series with new episodes will air on Comedy Central this year.

In 1993, Groening formed Bongo Comics Group, where he serves as publisher of The Simpsons Library of Wisdom, Simpsons Episode Guides, Simpsons Comics, Bart Simpson Comics, Radioactive Man Comics, Simpsons Comics Treasure Trove, the annual Bart Simpson’s Treehouse of Horror, Futurama Comics, more than 36 comic compilations, as well as instant classics including Bart Simpsons Guide to Life, The Simpsons Handbook, and The Simpsons Uncensored Family Album among others!

In addition to the many awards bestowed on his creations (including Emmys, Annies, and the prestigious Peabody Award), Groening was personally honored with the Rueben Award for Outstanding Cartoonist of the Year, the highest honor presented by the National Cartoonist Society. To date there are more than 14 million copies of books from HarperCollins in print throughout North America, the UK, and Australia based on The Simpsons, Futurama, and Life in Hell.

I love this book. I was a kid when this came out but didn't discover this book until I was in my 30s. I plan on collecting them all thr books of hell.

I first found this book while perusing a Barnes and Nobel about 17 years ago while my mom was getting her hair done. I was a big fan of the Simpsons, and was surprised to learn that Matt Groening had done things prior to the show. At the time, I could tell I really enjoyed the comics, but I couldn't put my finger on why. They were funny, but not that funny, the art was passable, but not phenomenal. Now, on the doorstep of thirty, with ten years of Sartre, Nietzsche, Hesse, etc under my belt and I finally understand what led me to spent my hard-earned allowance on a book full of black and white comics...
If you're a progressive parent that wants your teenager to start thinking about things a bit outside of the norm, something beyond say Hollister vs American Apparel, or Uniqlo vs Supreme, get them this comic. It deals with sex, sexuality, drugs, depression, suicide, parenthood, childhood, work, fulfillment (or lack thereof), the big Why, and a litany of others. Some of the comics haven't aged very well (though you might argue that any stereotypes might just be meta commentary), but by and large I think it's a good book to get kids started with the struggle of existence.
If you're a Republican, I wouldn't get this book, there are a lot of jokes at your ideology's expense (most of the comics were produced during the Reagan 80's).

For those who only know Matt Groening for the SIMPSON’s, you’ve truly missed out on this way -before-it’s-time comic. Addressing everyday adult topics with such an ironic and cynical twist makes this one of my favorite anthologies.

I purchased this when it came out (85ish?) and it had me in hysterics then. Wife sold it in garage sale, I found out about it 20 years later and bought it again. In fact I bought all the "Rabbit from hell" books lol.

If you are a fan of the creator of the Simpson’s, you’ll like this book. This book was written before the Simpson’s was created and led to the ideas to create the Simpson’s.

It's so much more involved and deep than the Simpsons. Just prepare for a generous peppering of curse words. There was one gag that made me burst out laughing for a couple of minutes. My co-workers at the lunch table did not appreciate my performance. You know where they can go...

I bought this from a review which said it was funny and insightful on any page you turned to. I got a couple of wry smiles from it but that's about all. Pehaps you need to be a die-hard fan.
