Encourage creativity with this wildly entertaining picture book mash-up from the minds of Jon Scieszka and Mac Barnett.

Alex has been given a saccharine, sappy, silly-sweet picture book about Birthday Bunny that his grandma found at a garage sale. Alex isn’t interested—until he decides to make the book something he’d actually like to read. So he takes out his pencil, sharpens his creativity, and totally transforms the story!

Birthday Bunny becomes
Battle Bunny, and the rabbit’s innocent journey through the forest morphs into a supersecret mission to unleash an evil plan—a plan that only Alex can stop.

Featuring layered, original artwork that emphasizes Alex’s additions, this dynamic exploration of creative storytelling is sure to engage and inspire.

Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

*Starred Review* This deliciously subversive piece of metafiction skewers—with a sharp wit and a sharper pencil—the earnest, purposeful literature so popular in the middle of the last century. The fun begins with a facsimile of something akin to an antique Little Golden Book, Birthday Bunny, complete with worn cover, yellowed pages, and wholesome message. But the book has been “improved” in story and pictures by a child named Alex wielding his trusty no. 2. The cover, retitled Battle Bunny, now features rockets, planes, bombs, and a general promise of mayhem. And Alex keeps that promise, transforming the insipid story of a sad bunny being cheered by his friends on his birthday into a raucous adventure wherein an evil bunny unleashes a tornado of destruction on the unsuspecting forest until the president is forced to call in one Agent Alex to save the day. Alex’s “edits,” including a complete reworking of the text and plenty of pictorial embellishments, are soaked in testosterone. The animals of the forest become luchadores and ninja warriors; Air Force One and a few presidents (Obama and Lincoln) make appearances; and just about everything explodes. In the end, Alex is victorious, Battle Bunny is vanquished, and the world is safe. At least until Alex and his pencil ride again . . . Grades K-5. --Thom Barthelmess

FULL DISCLOSURE! I am a children’s book author and the illustrator of this book illustrated one of my books. That’s how I found this book.

So I wrote a book and the illustrator ended up being Matt Myers. I then looked up his work and found Battle Bunny.

This is one of those books with a concept so fun I wish I’d written it. A kid gets a hoaky book and changes it to something awesome! YES! Could I have written it? No. I’m a different author but this was great, and kudos to the authors!

But the art?! How did he do it so well? He illustrated two books, one in the old fashioned “Golden Book” style we all are familiar with and one in the illustrations of a small, defiant, talented book vandal! It’s simply brilliant and requires a lot of creativity.

This book is great for ANY CHILD! It is a perfect segue to discussions about preferences and creativity. My kids love it! They range in ages from 21-26 but they remember being kids and appreciate reading books with multi-tiered humor now.

A great book!

I read this book for the purposes of seeing how it could be used in the classroom. I liked it so much that I read it to my kids. They loves it and asked for me to read both versions of the story(the idea is that Jon Scieszka takes a book, crosses out words and makes a new tale). I told my husband about this book and he immediately ordered it from amazon. My middle son got it for a Christmas present and he absolutely loved it. Great book! Cool read and something totally different then the usual. I love Jon Scieszka's humor.

We first tried to read Battle Bunny in the library, which I do not at all recommend. Make sure this book is only opened when the reader is located in a place where sudden outbursts of uncontrollable laughter are more appropriate.

Wow I am really amazed at the clever approach to this book. My son was absolutely mesmerized and greatly enjoyed it. We’ll read it again and again!

I bought this for my students and their reactions were hilarious. Most of them came to show me the book at first thinking someone had "messed it up." At the end of second grade (8 years old), my students struggled with the actual content. It was very hard for them to keep up with what is basically 2 story lines. In order to get the humor, you have to look at each page's "real" story and then see what the authors have done to revise it. Some of the older students understood it, but I think with another year they would all find the book as cute as I did.

All in all, I'd say that this is a great book to bring out to show how NOT to care for a book, but primary kids may or may not "get" it past that.

My friend, who teaches 7th grade, uses this book as a teaching tool. She explains how the author took a "traditional" story and flipped it on it's ear for a fun and creative take (though somewhat demented take) on a children's story. She then has her students rewrite classic fairy tales.

I bought this book for my 45 year old brother as a gag gift.. I can't help but think that this would have been something he would do to his books as a child! Very fun and creative little book.

Absolutely love the creativity and imagination that went into this book. I’ve always encouraged my students, and child, to change the ending of the story if they did not like it or just to add imaginative and critical thinking. This story has done just that in an imaginative and exciting way. My child frequently chooses this book as her nighttime read.

I also love the companion website that allowed you to print out your own blank Birthday Bunny book to rewrite. My five-year-old took those pages everywhere we went so that she could write her story, Dr. Dooms Bunny.

I think this would work well with reluctant/struggling readers/writers in elementary and early middle school.

For the young lad I have bought this for, I know he'll love the irreverent humour and jokes throughout this "pre-vandalised" comic masterpiece. The authors have really got inside the way children think (especially mischievous boys!) and I dare any adult not to giggle along with their child while reading this book.

The story of this book is that the original book is a simple nice story of a birthday bunny. But "the author" has started to write over it and change the story.
It is very nice to show this book to children, and then give them an old book, telling them to re-write the story on it as an exercise of imagination.
