A Tor.com Reviewers' Choice Best Book of the Year

Sparks fly in this enchanting fantasy novel from the author of
Unnatural Magic when a down-and-out fire witch and a young gentlewoman join forces against a deadly conspiracy.

Dellaria Wells, petty con artist, occasional thief, and partly educated fire witch, is behind on her rent in the city of Leiscourt—again. Then she sees the “wanted” sign, seeking
Female Persons, of Martial or Magical ability, to guard a Lady of some Importance, prior to the celebration of her Marriage. Delly fast-talks her way into the job and joins a team of highly peculiar women tasked with protecting their wealthy charge from unknown assassins.

Delly quickly sets her sights on one of her companions, the confident and well-bred Winn Cynallum. The job looks like nothing but romance and easy money until things take a deadly (and undead) turn. With the help of a bird-loving necromancer, a shapeshifting schoolgirl, and an ill-tempered reanimated mouse named Buttons, Delly and Winn are determined to get the best of an adversary who wields a twisted magic and has friends in the highest of places.

Review

“With this winning ensemble adventure, Waggoner again proves her skill at crafting immersive, historically flavored fantasy.”–Publishers Weekly (starred review)

"Delly Wells is the best kind of protagonist. Selfish, skittish, anxious and overwhelmed, smart, opportunistic, a good heart under all the bluster, and yes, ruthless. Waggoner’s characters absolutely shine...Agatha Christie in design and Pratchett-esque in execution."--Tor.com

Additional Praise for C.M. Waggoner and
Unnatural Magic

"The most unique, haunting, magical, treacherous, romantic, combative novel I've read in a long time. Action, betrayal, peoples at war, strange magic and stranger love--a whole new take on fantasy!"
#1 New York Times bestselling author Tamora Pierce

Unnatural Magic is peopled with unforgettable characters, whose changing relationships form the beating heart of this fast-paced, beautifully written story. Within the compelling tale lie some big themes—power, magic, gender and sexuality among them—and the author weaves them in skilfully, with just the right combination of compassion, insight and humour. This one goes straight onto my Keepers shelf.”—Juliet Marillier, Author of The Harp of Kings

"What a marvelous debut! I want to climb inside C.M. Waggoner’s world of powerful trolls, cheeky wizards, and mathematical magic and make myself at home. She seamlessly weaves politics, love, and magic into a novel that challenges everything we know about fantasy—and comes out victorious
." New York Times bestselling author Chloe Neill

"I didn't think you could fit so many things I loved into one book--tough-talking lady-trolls and cowardly captains, true love and found families, Holmesian hijinks and gender politics--but C.M. Waggoner made it look easy.
Unnatural Magic is a raucous, indulgent delight."—Alix E. Harrow, Hugo Award-winning author of The Ten Thousand Doors of January

“Complex and fascinating, Waggoner's debut offers fantasy readers a new viewpoint on magic, love, responsibility, and sacrifice. The themes of found family and unlikely, hard-earned trust are warmly convincing, and Waggoner's system of magic is unique and deeply satisfying.” —Vivian Shaw, Author of the Dr. Greta Helsing series

"C.M. Waggoner's
Unnatural Magic is a brilliant and terrifically fun book. I could have happily spent twice as long with Onna and Tsira in their compelling world and still wanted more. There's adventure and magic and murder, oh--and did I mention how much fun you'll have reading this?"—Kat Howard, Alex Award-winning author of An Unkindness of Magicians

"I have never read another novel that gave me so much of what I wanted so soon, and then just kept delivering the goods, page after page after page. Love, lust, magic, murder...This book has it all!"–Lara Elena Donnelly, Author of The Amberlough Dossier

A Exceptional Historical Fantasy
The first is a riveting story about a feisty petty thief turned badass bodyguard trying to keep a young lady safe from assassins,Let’s go back to the very inventive world of C.M. Waggoner, we were first introduced to the imagery alternative Victoriana in stunning book Unnatural Magic. In that book we meet our snarky heroine Dellaria Wells.Dellaria Wells is charismatic guttersnipe with a charming personality. She definitely spunky and runs petty cons in order to keep a roof over her head and look after her even more no-good mother who’s drug addiction. An uncommonly talented fire witch, who his in dire need of funds, joining a team of mismatched bodyguards. Their job seems quite easy, protecting a wealthy lady in the following weeks leading up to her marriage. But alas all is not what it seems and in this bawdy steampunk fantasy adventure. Full of magic, and a delightful queer romance made for a spectacular read. The characters are well developed and I have to say I highly enjoyed reading this from start to finish. The original dialogue was in really creative, the authors writing style was absorbing and I sped through the pages. An fresh and imaginative historical fantasy, full of atmospheric details.I really liked the heroine in this romp of a storyline, she is partial to excessive drinking, and free spirited. The romance was well depicted and it will melt your heart.

Firstly, I cannot get over how delightfully whimsical each and every chapter name was. The entirety of this book is chock full of whimsy. Dellaria makes for an unusual and enjoyable protagonist, and I loved exploring this world through her eyes. Winn is similarly delightful, and I would love to read more about their adventures (I'm hoping the author will write more with them).

This is a book I will read and reread for years to come. If the blurb at all piques your interest, you shan't be disappointed in the story. I truly cannot state enough how delightfully whimsical this story is.

This is essentially a mystery set in a fantastical world, with great world building, excellent character development, and an unforgettably whimiscaly flourish of the pen that carries you along.

I didn't enjoy this one quite as much as Unnatural Magic, but, really, it's quite good. It was so cool to finish Bk 1, & know there was another one ready to be downloaded & read!

1) Bk 1 was told from the point of view of 3 different characters, this book, just 1. It wasn't quite as intriguing, somehow. Undoubtably that was partly because the main character is not a very admirable person. She knows it! Her life has always been entirely about survival, not ethics. And she's a very good survivor. It's a major theme of the book that she's no longer satisfied with wallowing in it all, & she's hankering to become a better person, but doesn't really have faith that she can do it.

2) Still, she's snarky, and this book is even funnier than the 1st. Funny, unexpected situations & characters, & the running internal commentary of our heroine, Delly. A love of words, many of them made up. (Absentia.
Who would want to name their kid after the state of being absent?! ) I'm curious where she'll go with this series longterm; this book features the daughter of our 2 lovers from book one. Wynn, being part troll, has that whole "trolls LIKE to take care of other people" thing going for her.

3) Strangely enuf, there's not a whole lot of World Building going on in these books, & I didn't even mind! It's as if this (Delly's world) is just the world we all live in now, & you're just supposed to be savvy--or you're going to have to get caught up on your own. You know, like in real life, only they dont have google. It has that immediacy & grittiness of urban fantasy in that way (though I had the impression that urban fantasy had to have vampires werewolves & such. None of those here yet, though there is a skeletal zombie mouse called Bouncer (small spoiler there).

4) I was for some reason surprised that this book was going to be a murder mystery, too. Not my favorite genre. Well, a genre within another --but that seems to be where fantasy is going these days anyway. I've been enjoying some Steam Punk/Urban-Fantasy/Fantasy lately;) Who knew! At any rate, CM Waggoner does murder mystery very well, in my humble opinion, and I look forward with anticipation to her next book.

At first I was turned off by the foul language and worse morals. I persevered and it got better and better. No explicit sex. Really hilarious moments and moments of utter despair but a very exciting ending and an excellent fantasy.

I just couldn’t get as into the story as I would have liked. The language that Dellaria was speaking (sort of 19th century, Whitechapel, something similar) made it very difficult for me to understand what she was saying and made me keep losing track of the storyline. So, much as I didn’t want to….I gave up and quit.

I loved it! The language is wonderful to learn as you go, the class commentary, characters’ arcs and the mix of steampunk and magic really make this book a world I hope to go back to soon one day! And to top it all, a sweet (and rather stormy) wlw couple (with a bi protagonist!).

Dellaria's had a hard life, and she also likes the hard stuff. Even though she has an alcohol problem, and sure, she steals things from time to time, it's all because she wants to save enough to help her dear mother out. Finding out that a female bodyguard is needed by some hoity-toity so-and-so, Dellaria figures it'll be easy money as she smooth-talks her way into the guard force along with a little pyro witchy magic. Her new boss is supposedly being attacked by unknown assassins, but how bad could they be? That is, until the first attack comes, and Dellaria feels the peril bite a bit too close for comfort. Shaken, she turns to Winn, another bodyguard, and they prepare to fulfill their duties to their lady no matter what.

A hard-drinking woman living in a fantasy Victorian world, becoming entangled in bodyguard business that leads into a criminal plot, and becoming further entangled with another bodyguard? That certainly piques the interest, if I may say so. One thing that I immediately noticed about this story is the expansive use of alternate or created words mixed with Victorian-style language mannerisms. That's a long-winded way of saying it took a moment to adjust to how things were phrased, which I assume is similar to C.M. Waggoner's previous work, Unnatural Magic.

Dellaria is a solid if not entirely likeable character, and her motivations are at least pure, even if her actions aren't. I also do admire her for sticking with the job even when it became more perilous than she expected, as that does speak to her strength of character to some degree. I did mention offhand that Dellaria does become enamored with another bodyguard, as this is a sapphic romance, but it's also interesting to note that Winn is half-troll, and it's not often that individuals from two species intertwine. The other bodyguards are serviceable and have interesting abilities and personalities, and it was nice that all of them were female as well as representing many different age groups. That part of the group does serve a more supporting role in the story, as the focus remains on the central duo.

The Ruthless Lady's Guide to Wizardry presents a sapphic Victorian fantasy that captures the imagination, though it does slow down a touch much at times. This allows for the growth of character relationships, and for them to show us their personalities, but the tension in the plot suffers a bit as a result. Still, if you can grow accustomed to the terms and language of this interesting world, you'll find it to be an interesting rough-and-tumble romp for money, companionship, and purpose, if only the assassins don't find their mark and end it all too soon for Dellaria and Winn.

Well…. I only bought his because it was cheap on Bookbub, which proves, I supposed that the ‘bub is worth the effort and expense of the editors. But this… I truly had no idea what to expect, but steampunk half-troll lesbians falling in love with fire witches from the gutter wasn’t it. It was grand, though - a good cosy thriller with the bad guys nastily bad, the heroine brilliantly morally ambiguous and still utterly loveable. And the cutest half-troll shootist I’ve met in a long time. Lots of fun. The writing was completely captivating. I loved it.
