Between Ghosts Kindle Edition

4.6 4.6 out of 5 stars 540 ratings

There are a hundred reasons why falling for a gorgeous, tattooed soldier is a terrible idea. An office romance with tanks and guns?

No thanks.

Besides, Connor Regan has other things on his mind. After his brother’s death, he finds himself bound for Iraq to embed with an elite SAS team. He sets his boots on the ground looking for closure and solace—anything to ease the pain of James’s death.

Instead he finds Sergeant Thompson—a moody, inked Adonis with a sinfully rare smile.

Nat is a veteran commander, hardened by years of combat and haunted by the loss of his best friend. Being lumbered with a journalist is a hassle Nat doesn’t need, and he vows to do nothing more than keep the hapless hack from harm’s way.

But Connor proves far from hapless, and too compelling to ignore for long. He walks straight through the steel wall Nat’s built around his heart, and when their mission puts him in mortal danger, Nat must lay old ghosts to rest and fight to the death for the only man he’s ever truly loved.

Between Ghosts is an angsty MM military romance. Expect: hurt/comfort, scenes of war, grumpy soldiers, and inventive ways to ease the tension.

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

In this romantic drama, a British journalist embedded with an SAS unit on the frontlines of the Iraq War in 2006 unexpectedly finds companionship with the unit's leader. Connor Regan is still coming to terms with the death of his brother, who was killed in action three years previously, and hopes to gain closure by reporting directly from the field. Sgt. Nat Thompson is determined to keep Connor safe as he and his team search for a dangerous terrorist leader. Soon enough, Connor and Nat indulge in their mutual desires, seeking release and satisfaction amidst the stress and horrors of war. What starts off as a clear-cut physical relationship soon grows deeper, just in time for a routine mission to go horribly wrong. Leigh does an excellent job of capturing the raw emotional connection between the leads and her depiction of the war-torn setting is convincingly tense. However, the story suffers from predictability as it moves from one plot beat to the next, leading to the inevitable confrontation with Nat's target. (Mar.)\n

10 stars for this gripping tale of war ! British SAS, Special Air Services, are soldiers in Basra, Iraq, collecting Intel, studying landscapes, patrolling, mapping, searching, and surviving anyway they can. The language is very British. Nat is the leader of his squad. He's rough, tough, and fierce. A journalist is assigned to him and he'll be in the way. When Connor, the good looking writer shows up, Nat is surprised. Connor is smart, savvy, and fits in well. This story is astoundingly well written, with descriptions that bring us into the scenes, as we travel alongside the guys. This amazing cast of characters are bigger than life. Each man different than the next; each one a seasoned fighter.
Having never been in battle, I don't know any difference, so, to me, this story is a stunning, day to day peek at the conditions, locations, hardships, and combat in the Iraq war. We are engrossed in the work, violence, down times, and the emotions that are felt by the hardened men.
The relationship that sustains Connor and Nat is secret, tender, raw and powerful. It is but a small part of the whole picture.
I won't give away any more. I LOVED IT ! The story conclusion and wrap up are well done and heartwarming. I highly recommend this deeply intense, stunning tale. ENJOY !

In charge Nat has loss some men and pushes hard to complete his mission. The toll and n his soul is the ultimate cost. Journalist Connor is placed with an elite team to report on the humanitarian efforts "fluff" but reality humanitarian & battles are trying to operate the same space. This is a great story for military suspense/mission drama. It also holds the brother bonds and a surprise throughout. V3, S2 more reviews please Che k out @my2centsbooklover Thanks!

Connor and Nat quickly won my heart in this tense story set mostly in Iraq, 2006. Garrett Leigh's gift of creating a sense of place shines. Her depiction of the war-ravaged country feels authentic. I could feel the heat and taste the desperation and frustration.
A bit of a slow burn by necessity given the circumstances, there's still a deep emotional connection between the two men that builds steadily throughout the story. Perhaps in part because of the limitations on their physical interactions. Regardless, I thought this book was brilliantly done, and I am eager to catch up with any further adventures that await on the author's Patreon.

So good! Glad I gave it a shot even though military isn’t usually my type of reading material. Garrett Leigh is a great author and does no wrong! 4.5 so rounded up to 5!

Garrett Leigh has written a very powerful novel. Connor Regan, British journalist, accompanies Special Forces group Charlie-3 to wartime Basra, Iraq, to determine "why and how" his brother James was killed. And, as you can imagine (since this is war) a considerable amount of violence is depicted. It does not, in my mind, detract from the power of the writing. Charlie-3's mission is to determine how RPG's are smuggled into Basra. And you realize that the task is depicted as Sisyphus pushing a rock up a mountain. To use Leigh's words the scene was portrayed as a "pointless vortex of violence and death". Against the background Connor and Nat form a relationship that is almost impossible to imagine in this cruel environment. I disagree with a prior reviewer who felt that the "connection" between the two was not strongly developed. To me it was, and they connected both professionally (trying the Sisyphus futility) and personally. In a wartime environment, there was real angst in both Nat & Connor. Clarity regarding the title and who Pogo was became clear toward the end of the novel. Don't miss this.

I am a huge fan of anything military, as I am a veteran. Some get it right, some don't. This is such a powerful, scary story. It really puts you right there and makes you feel the every day boredom and fear of combat. Great job. Loved both characters, but especially the other team members.

Journalist Conner Regan wants answers about the death of his older brother James in Iraq. He devises a plan to travel with some troops, providing an insight to the war, but perhaps he will also get an answer about his brother.

Nathan "Nat" Thompson has been fighting in Iraq for several years now. He commands a group of harden, weary men. What he doesn't need is a civilian that will bollocks their missions, but the higher ups think it will be good PR.

This book is now at the top of my list for 2016. I thought it was a brilliant piece about bonds, physical, spiritual, and mental, highlighted with some amazing characters. I, also, applaud the amount of research that went into this story. Knowing men that have been in Iraq, and other campaigns, I can say that the author did an amazing job. If it's hearts and flowers that turn you on, this probably won't be your cup of tea, but it should be. Well done, Garrett Leigh, well done.

I love the main character in this book. Sometimes some character doesn't mesh well together, but this one does. I really liked the fact that this story has a twist that I didn't even realize should be there. Most of the time, with this author I don't normally look for something to figure out. But it worked. I liked that there's something towards the end.

5.0 out of 5 stars We love ourselves a Military story
Reviewed in Canada on March 30, 2017
We don’t know where to start with this heartbreaking, love- story. We love ourselves a Military story, but Between Ghosts by Garrett Leigh is so much more than that.

We first start with Connor Regan a journalist at the Guardian who has requested to be imbedded with an SAS group in Iraq. He is fighting the ghost of his dead brother who died under secret circumstances 3 years ago in the same war. Connor finds himself looking for pieces of James, trying to figure out who his brother and following his footsteps has lead him to Charlie-3 company, trying to tell the real story of war.
Charlie-3 company is a band of brothers, military men who have been together for over 3-years. Their leader, Nathanial Thompson - Nat is a career SAS man, finding it harder and harder to understand the war that they are fighting. Nat is not happy when his company is dumped with a journalist to babysit, but quickly finds that he wants to protect Connor, but finds it hard to open pieces of himself that have long been buried.

Military Romance usually stumble on the balance of war and romance, Between Ghosts finds a perfect balance, showing how these 2 men come to rely on each other. Garrett Leigh doesn’t shy away from the realities of this war, in fact uses it to build empathy for Nat and the team of Charlie-3. You see that living and working in these conditions could do nothing but harden a person, and making the relationship between Connor and Nat real, that they can rely on each other to be real in all the chaos.

The writing of this book also sets it apart from other Military Romance books, Garret Leigh spends quite a bit of time developing the other characters, and the personalities of Charlie-3, making you feel like a part of this family. There isn’t much softness here, not a traditional romance with touches and looks, but instead based on a true need to connect to someone, and Connor and Nat fit together beautifully. In the end it leaves you rooting for this unlikely couple and hoping that even through the blood, pain and tears, Nat and Connor can find what they both need.

We LOVED this book. And you will too!

5.0 out of 5 stars Powerful Writing

I bought my own copy of this book to read and review for Wicked Reads.

This is an incredibly moving story. A journalist embedded with an SAS team, Connor is looking for answers and determined to tell the truth about the experience of soldiers in Iraq. His powerful experience brings more questions than answers as he becomes part of the tightly knit elite unit.

Garrett Leigh’s gritty story of modern warfare is frighteningly convincing. She makes Iraq come to life and her soldiers are larger than life. Connor is thrust into a conflict without a frontline where enemies are hidden, the threat is constant and essential equipment is scarce. Long stretches of tedium are offset by moments of pure terror. The relationships between the soldiers are intense and fierce and death is also a constant reality.

The men in this story, Connor and Nat are complicated characters. Nat is torn between resenting Connor’s presence and the threat he presents to the team and welcoming his company and enjoying his friendship. As a civilian journalist, Connor struggles with Nat’s actions and decisions as his experience in Iraq challenges his personal moral code.

The chemistry between these two is hot but this is more of a war story than it is a romance. Garrett Leigh’s trademark angst is here but it materialises as a futile struggle for truth and absolutes. The friendships in this story are as powerful as the central romance (which isn’t always central.

This is a beautifully crafted and very difficult war story. It was a powerful read. Written in 2016 but set in 2006, it is still chillingly relevant, especially with the publication of the Chilcot report in 2016. This is a slightly different story from Garrett Leigh, but as always, her characters are wonderful and it is carefully and thoughtfully written.
