Purchase options and add-ons
"A comprehensive Introduction with a light touch (Beckman), a poetic rendering with verve and moxie (Lombardo): This edition of the colossal Babylonian Gilgamesh Epic should satisfy all readers who seek to plumb its wealth and depth without stumbling over its many inconvenient gaps and cruxes. A fine gift to all lovers of great literature."

- Reviewed in the United States on September 7, 2019I’ve always had good luck with Stanley Lombardo, and he did right by yet another ancient epic here. I much prefer this to any other translations I’ve read. In clear, rhythmic verse, Lombardo captures both the existential struggles of the hero — his yearnings for friendship and meaning that we can all identify with — and its strange, alien feel. At the core of this ancient, ancient tale lies a beating human heart.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 2, 2019A fantastic introduction, timeline, and terms glossary complement this beautiful translation. If you are a fan of Lombardo already, you will know his translation is top notch. The additional features by Gary Beckman help make this slim volume and powerful and useful new translation. As a high school English teacher, I would not hesitate to use this version in my own classroom.

- Reviewed in the United States on October 15, 2021I put off reading Gilgamesh for years because I thought it would be too mentally challenging. Wrong. Gilgamesh is excellent and easy to read. This particular translation flows well, seems complete, and has a nice type face. Great experience!
